  • Awesome, Dr. Nazir! Thank you for posting! It is amazing that more AVM's are being diagnosed in time for treatment. Just ten years ago most people had no idea what an AVM was and was mostly found at autopsy. This is an exciting development, indeed.

  • @slfimprovement -- I know someone who was just diagnosed with an AVM which is hard to operate , there is fluid coming in to the brain, a shunt was put in to drain the fluid, would you recommend this doctor ?? I'm in NY.

  • neuro surgery is very difficult it takes longest to be one and very dangerous one wrong movement can lead to permanent paralysis making worse

  • I have a family member that was told he was born with his AVM. He didn't know he had it till he was almost 40 years old....( he had been having bad headaches )

At the time they found his the Dr. said "they wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole"...It was quite large.

I'd guess things have come a lomg way since the mid 70's.

  • Stupid character count. Anyway, I was told that they would be gone forever. I even had one in my tongue and a portion of that was actually removed and replaced with healthy tissue. I somehow managed to grow an avm in healthy tissue and had others grow back or new ones pop up in the same places and some new places too. Having them surgically removed kept them away for longer but I just tried the Onyx and I'm hoping it'll work and I won't need to be cut open again as I have them all over my body

  • Doctors keep changing their minds on whether you're just born with them. I started having problems when I was two. I've had mine embolized with alcohol and after nearly dying because he used too much, they grew back more aggressive. No idea if it was because of the alcohol. Tried embolization by glue and that didn't help. Then I found a surgeon in Little Rock that embolized and surgically removed them. Other doctors were too scared to remove them. I was told that once the nidus was removed that

  • AVM is Artery venous Malformation. Blood vessels such as artery and veins are intersecting each other and forms a annuersym. Hazards of AVM depends on its size.

  • what is an avm?

  • What's an AVM? What was that white thing that he removed from one side of th brain and put into two different places on another side???

  • I just stumbled across this and thought I would comment on how lucky I was. My last year of college 1992 I was in a head-on collision. Sucked! After recovering from my face smashing into the steering wheel ripping my forehead open I had numerous tests performed to be sure all is well. The docs said I was fine. I wanted a second opinion on my MRI images. These docs discovered the AVM. Had it resected June 1993. A real party that was. so the accident was a blessing in disguise.

  • this is true! I was born with an AVM...

  • 'Ive been told one is born with an AVM....Is that true?

  • i was born with one, but i think it can occur even if you arn't born with one.

  • I have a cavernoma. I live in London and Inshallah it will get removed, most probably by Queen Square Hospital.

  • well brother pretty soon, the reason for delay is that we dont film the craniotomy (the osteoplastic flap raising part)as the recording is done after dura is opened and the lesion(e.g. avm or aneurysm , tumor etc) is addressed.Inshallah ,A classical Craniotomy procedure, in steps ,will be recorded and uploaded.
