@mlk22771 There's an official id Software ftp server where you can download source code of many of their engines and games (up to Doom 3 I think). There are also Linux native binaries of their games (up to Quake 4 I think). So I'm believe them if they say there will be Linux version of Rage. Valve Corporation is another story...

@CLICKMEYOULOSER I play games under Wine. Some older ones have problems with resolution and stuff and some newer ones have problems with not being able to run under anything less than DirectX 6518518684894. DirectX is the plague of gaming. Where are the days every decent game had OpenGL renderer?

@dante4d OpenGL is pretty unoptimized for newer hardware. And DirectX is meh. With my current hardware, if I could run a game with both options, I would pick DirectX. Cleaner. If I got my 11 year old PC rig out of my basement, I would go for OpenGL.

And I advise you heavily, use Windows for gaming instead of using Wine. You get a performance boost (Kind of) and no more compatibility issues.

@CLICKMEYOULOSER I don't play the newer games at all, so I don't need that extra 16xFSAA at full HD and other crap. Some good examples where I could test it? Most recent thing I have would be probalby Left 4 Dead 2 or Doom 3/Quake 4. I'm thinking about getting Rage now. But no way I'm going to put anything Microsoft on my physical hard rive any more, I'm sure about that. I did some programming back then in both DirectX and OpenGl. DirectX used to be a mess...

@dante4d Ahh, yes, finally another Programmer like me that understands. While DirectX is clean for the modern hardware, it's a bunch of crap to code. OpenGL is much more simple, which is probably why it got overtaken in today's technology. I still suggest you use Windows 7. As much as I hate Microsoft, I still use their OS.

@CLICKMEYOULOSER Today I checked Rage. It's id Tech 5 engine. It's rendering system uses OpenGL and Carmack plans to make Linux port somewhere in the future. Meanwhile, they released Doom 3 (id Tech 4 I suppose) source code as open source. I'll have to check that, I haven't seen any id Soft code for 5 years.

I use Windows 7 to browse the internet, play games, even edit movies. I hardly use Mac. I use Linux to host servers. I think that the representation of Linux being the "prettiest" operating system is highly inaccurate. Windows or Mac would be the "prettiest" operating system, but being the "prettiest" comes with its drawbacks. Linux is so much more customizable than Windows or Mac; Linux can be a home computer to a server to any computer in between. It sacrifices ease of use for flexibility.

@Rorintosh Not really, you have Crossover Linux (Helps to run some Windows software), Wine and PlayOnLinux. The Linux community has come a long way over the 6 years I've been using it and many of the programs that people are accustomed to running on Windows can be run on. Aside from that different Linux distributions have their own apps to replace what a person may be used to running on Windows and sometimes Mac.

Ok well first of all, DX11 runs on Vista. As for XP, it naturally will not run for several reasons, not the least of which is outdated 32-bit architecture. Sure, Vista and 7 come in 32-bit flavors, but its rather pointless to utilize said OS for DX11 due to several limitations, not the least of which is maximum available RAM on an x86 install. XP served its purpose and gave the world a really great OS, but it's time to move on. Apple did the same thing.

How many times have I googled for some software that is "free", but I found some software that was said to be "free" but that didn't mean "can be had and used without paying for it". Things like "out software is free to use after you pay us $100 and that of course just is the licence, so another $100 per year for support nad of course that doesn't mean upgrade to new version is included". Of course the upgrade is "free", buy after you pay for it...

People. Put it this way: if the Linux kernel is used, then it appends "Linux" to whatever the name is. The kernel is still used, just canonical makes some changes using Linux kernel modules (while not tainting the kernel). Ubuntu is still Linux in this light; so is android (using the kernel= Linux)
