Love this...thank you. My cousin was Richard's backup singer in the late 70's early 80's. Sadly she passed away in 91 & it's wonderful to watch these & see/hear her singing. You have brought tears to my eyes. Great to show my kids as well who never got to meet her. x
I had to always play his music when I was pregnant with my first child whose now 23yrs old. She would kick so hard if I played any other music and I hadn't really heard this music until I met her dad... I couldn't even play 'Caravan to midnight' by 'Robyn Trower'... It obviously was soothing to her and I have been to one of his concerts in Hobart @ the Wrest Point Casino... I learned to love his music even more...
Ahh yeah, just got my drivers license when this song hit the charts. I want that Les Paul Gold Top to keep my 1969 Les Paul Custom company. Thanks for sharing this song and the long list of classics - time consuming job but worth it. Cheers.
One song that's makes me homesick when I'm away is 'Deep Water'. Actually any RC song.' Goodbye Tiger' 'Lucky Country'' 'Capricorn Dancer' 'Blue Bay Blues' 'Girls On The Avenue' 'The Best Days Of Our Lives' etc etc etc
Why even bring up the origins thing below? -He is a legend and after he's gone we'll be waiting a long time for another singer/songwriter of his calibre
@nzoz1977, yes, he had a Chinese dad, but if you look at his eyes, it's very difficult, if not impossible to tell he has Asian eyes. In any case, I think you overstate the importance of that in Australia. Yes, racism exists, but overall, Australia is one of the most welcoming and accepting of peoples of all races and religions worldwide - having worked overseas for years, I can tell you that many peoples still regard and treat people of other races as pariahs, in a way that would shock you.
Radio stations just don't play his songs much at all...heaps of Eric's though...So My son and I ( Retro Heads ) play all his great tracks on our radio station...N.Z. 100.3 Blue fm ....
Interesting comment about a song by a guy who is half Chinese........when you say "us Aussies" I wonder which particular group of immigrants you are talking about ? Open your eyes and your mind please.....something for you to think about while you enjoy your cappucino, your beer, your wine, a musical lyric or whatever else it is that was brought over or created by some "non Aussie"......
This was recorded when we really were the lucky country jobs for all and rewards for those who were prepared to have a go regardless of ethnicity, and our future was bright, That is no longer the case!
Sorry about that then. Are things really that bad ? Australia (currently) has one of the lowest unemployment rates and highest minimum wage rates in the world. Things could be worse.........
Do you think people just click dislike to be arseholes? How could anyone not like this song? My mind floods with memories of better times whenever I hear this song.....or any of the songs nzoz posts!
I first saw Richard at Yarra bend where they were holding a scate board 'circus' I was 16 then. He sung girls on the avenue. Later in life I became a memeber of the swand and in 1995, Richard played the same song before the game....I was 38 ..Such a buzz..He si still one of my favorite singers...
@Isobelshome I have and remember that shit hole with much love. A regular venue for any Sydney boy who loved his music, Scrumpy cider and illicit dope. Cyril B, Midnight Oil you name them, most blossoming Sydney bands played on that tiny stage and looked out onto the sticky, pile-less, cigarette burned, (used to be) purple carpet. Aah what a dump but we loved the joint! The building still stands but it's no longer a wine bar/rock venue, I think it's a clothing store or a coffee shop.
@nzoz1977 , I had you down as a New Zealander, because of the whole NZ/OZ thing, where Kiwis resent Aussies and Aussies look down on Kiwis. [GENERALISATION …!]
If you were an Aussie you'd have probably named your channel OzMusic or similar, as Kiwi bands come to Oz to 'make it big' (or bigger at least) and Aussies half the time think they're Aussie bands anyway. But a Kiwi would put NZ in the name, and put it first.
(I speak as an Aussie who emigrated to NZ and loved it, btw.)
Saw the man in concert a few months back in Melbourne - has not lost it - and interacted really well with the crowd - it IS getting scary that the mosh pit was full of blokes with greying scalps though :-) those really were great days and framed with the music of a genius
Takes me back to the days of hanging at the local milkbar, chomping on a pine lime splice, playing the pinball machine with my mates and listening to this song on the radio.
I saw Richard Clapton at a free concert at The Rocks a couple of years ago - and my sister noticed him about to walk past us & said hello to him ... & he was so nice.
Mr Rivethead - your spelling is terrible. The correct spelling of your name is actually 'd-i-c-k-h-e-a-d' - understand??
I was going to give Mr. Rivethead a blast but I see the drop kick's account is now closed. Pity, hope it was another of his accidents. Clapton is and always will be an Australian music legend
This music is so great. I remember me and my father listening to lots of music like this when i was growing up. Reminds me of memories and still keeps me entertained with its brilliance.
Planetalk! Is that you Kirk L'orange? You are a guitar legend - a pleasure to hear from you! And Litterio2009, so sorry you had a bad experience at one of Claptons shows. I read an interview with RJ Davis from Brodie Ash who worked with a lot of Oz musicians - when asked he said that Clapton and Jimmy Barnes were both very nice guys. In fact that interview turned me on to all this stuff (I'm not Australian so it was new to me) - including Kirk L'orange. Perhaps Richard was just having a bad day?
@nzoz1977 He has Chinese origins Terry Goh. Richard Clapton is a stage name made up from his two favourite musicians Keith Richards and Eric Clapton.
I always suspected the dark sunglasses were to hide his chinese eyes, I don't blame him, could you imagine an Aussie of Asian appearance getting a following in racist Australia during the 60's-70s. Hell we still had that stupid "White Australia Policy" specifically aimed at Asians. Even today this is still a pro white European culture.
@felixq78 he has pterygiums which is why he wears dark glasses, not to hide "asian eyes". That's so ridiculous. There were a number of asians popular in the 70s - Les Goch from Hush for a start was a huge sex symbol. There are plenty of pics of Clapton without glasses. try the cover of Goodbye Tiger
@nzoz1977 as most richard clapton fans would know (in fact anyone with any interest in australia music, Richard Clapton took this name himself, naming himself after his two favourite musos - Eric Clapton and Keith Richards.
This guy ROX! I love his songs and have often sung along to his other big hit on the radio! I actually also thought for a long time he was American! I know what you mean.I was only 5 when this came out. whats cool for me about this song is that line " they closed the doors to the trocadero and I came back looking just like a Ghost". my beloved Hoyts on George st was the building that replaced the Troc in 76 and then I experianced the same as one by one they tore down my favorite haunts of youth on the same block and I too came back lookin like a ghost.
@tolly63 A right of passage for any Sydney lad coming of age in the seventies, "my crazy eyes keep lookin' out to see, what do they expect to find ? Sure as hell ain't peace of mind.
The wonderful thing is that we can still catch Richard Clapton at your local because unlike many of our successful musos he didn't sell out. As usual he and whoever he has in his band are superb.

Was a big fan of RC, Haven't heard this for so long. Voice is kinda like Graham Parker and a Bob Seger back up band - na...
Sounds like a lotta 70s bands in OZ at that era switched to the US style music after giving up on glam rock, though don't think RC was much into that

His favourite line is "Yawl havin' a good time ? Well I AM !" Usually because Ralph ALWAYS enjoys his gigs, that's why he still does it.
