I have the Canon T3i and its my first DSLR camera, but when I shoot video in low light (shadow), I get some noise. Is there a good quality lens that could reduce noise or is it just a setting? I usually keep my ISO on auto.
@freeridezach It's only hard at first. All you need to know is that ISO is how sensitive the sensor is to the light, and aperture is how much light comes in.
i'm debating between the 24-105 and the 24-70 I like the xtra 35mm but I like the sharpness of the 24-70. I shoot mostly outdoors but i'd like to have 2.8 for low light. which one would you recommend?
24-70 or 24-105. the 105 gotIS, but 4f and the 70 got 2.8.... i am getting one for filming, but damn its hard to deside :d Anyone who want to help a guy with some tips? got a 550d btw
@MattsMacintosh At the beginning (0:14) focal length seems to change a bit while you change focus. Are you using lens without an internal focus or why it does so? Should I be interested if some lens has internal focus or not? (Talking about zoom lenses for video)
Stoked I have the 50mm and 24-70 already. What a sweet feeling I got on my insides when you recommened them. Tokina 11-16 for wide stuff. Think i'll buy a fixed 20mm now, what do ya reckon?
I do all kind of video shoots from Run n gun for royalty free sites so very high quality, to studio, Music video clips, short films, publicity and promotional a lot of low light and 1 point lighting situations etc Also, do you think a good telefoto would come in useful and which would you recommend for that camera. Thanks for your time and great video very informative.
Hi I've just sen this video and I've subscribed to your page, I note you're talking about SLR cameras, and I wondered what you would suggest on the ather hand for the Panasonic AG AF 101 HD which is an awsome piece of machinery wiyth interchangeable lens capabilities. As I'm thinking of buying one in the near furure, I'd like to have your opinion on that.
Hey I have a question I am thinking about getting a new camera for making videos from my channel but a DSLR or powerful as one. I am between the Sony Nex-5n or the Canon T3i I know the Sony isn't a DSLR but it is powerful as one. So which one would you choose???
I have a bunch of old Zeiss lens' that fit on my Canon, but none of them meet your specs described and don't even have autofocus. If I sell them all (there are 5), could I afford the 50mm 1.4?? Is Zeiss a good brand?
@ingaman Many consider Zeiss to be the greatest lens maker in the world, so yes, its a very good brand. Without knowing more I wouldn't be able to tell you for sure, but I would probably keep them. Autofocus isn't really that important in video (in fact, it kind of sucks).
@jaibus for starters the focus ring is not right at the front of the lens, a bit more light, slightly shallower focus and the quality is definitely a step up. A great lens for shooting video
@ingaman do not sell zeiss glass!! if you're shooting DSLR there is hardly anything better. all the best DSLR shooters prefer zeiss. what F-stop are they? prime?
@justinmbrooks Hi sorry it took me so long to reply. They are all prime lens' which is annoying for me cause I like to zoom sometimes to get closer up There is a 28mm and 35mm that are f2, 50mm and 85mm that are f1.4 and a 21mm that is 2.8mm. My uncle bought them when he got into photography again but never got to use them. He also had a strange looking Zeiss lens that was 35mm but doesn't have an F number.
@stanlymanly2 Would you consider trading for a 35mm 1.4 or 1.8? But it has to have autofocus... there are no camera stores in my area, so I can't buy it.
@ingaman You should consider how old the lenses are. If they are VERY old (pre 1990) you have to look where they come from. If they were made in the soviet-part (Zeiss-Jena) of germany, they are kinda ok. If they were made in the western part (Zeiss-"something with K", just forgot the damn name >.<), they were superb :)
all the newer zeiss lenses are great anyways, so no worries about them
@MattsMacintosh I do photography and video I have a 70-300mm canon and the 60mm 2.8 macro I'd like to get either a 50mm or a better zoom lens which would you recommend first?
@bl00drusher93 Since you already have 60mm-300mm covered, I would recommend a shorter focal length such as the 28mm or 24mm. You need to decide what you need. If you are going to shoot low light, a big aperture would be good but if not, a zoom lens may be better. But in the end, it's up to you.
@weeq326 the tokina 11-16 mm 2.8 is according to most people a must have for any DSLR shooter, I have it and it's amazing. Bit pricey though, but worth it.
@RubenDelight Will the tokina 11-16 mm 2.8 work on with my canon 7d? Or will i have to purchase an adpater ring to attacht it? This lense is an Extreme Wife Angle right?
@weeq326 hmmm high-budget filmmakers use wide angle lenses for their films? Not all do use wide angle lens for cinematic movie shooting do they? If you have an answer please have references.
Nice Vid.. I had 18-200mm and the 50mm 1.8, i just understood why i lost too much quality when i zoom out my 18-200mm after watching this video.. i just have one important thing to ask, how do you export your video not to loose to much quality!? thanks
hey i got a lense from my grandpa. (Canon Ultrasonic Zoom Lens 28-105mm). Its old, but it'll still work with my canon 600d. Is it a good choice for the first lense?.
A solution to prevent something like a kit lens from stopping down is to set the aperture higher than the min aperture of the focal length you will zoom into
if your lens is a 28-55 4.5-5.6f, then you would set the aperture to 5.6 if you intend to fully zoom in.
What types of video do you shoot with a 50mm on a aps-c camera? Its very zoomed in right? Doesnt that make it less versatile? What do you use more often for video, your 28mm or 50mm lens?
okay question. I have a T3i, and the kit lens that was provided with it. I shoot video and want to know, i have the settings on ap-3.5, iso-800, and shutter speed-30. that is just about how i get decent video with minimal noise, but its not too bright. its the lens restriction correct? if i had a lesser ap level it would be brighter correct? or more ambient light? that is the understanding of it? and is that why the kit lens does not do well in low light without noise?
okay... so im filming on a canon t2i and want to get a my first basic prime lens... however the canon 28mm and sigma 30mm are a little steep in price... would it be a good idea to just pick up a nikon 35mm F1.8 for only $200, and a nikon to canon lens adapter for $15? wouldnt this do the same job for me considering im working on a cropped sensor?
All of these lenses fit on the canon 60D? I'm looking for a camera that's really good, but for beginners any suggestions? (I was thinking about getting an Olympus Ep-3, Is it any good?)
What's best lens - canon 30mm 1.4 or sigma 28mm 1.8 - for movie making with cropped sensor dslr? Probably 600d or 60d. Movies will include indoor and night-time shots. I can't make up my mind and it's giving me headache.
@psisky Umm, ye, I got them two mixed up, (see what I mean?). I think I meant sigma 30mm 1.4 or canon 28mm 1.8, (or 2.8?) God, this is confusing. Answers on a postcard please -HELP!!
For anyone looking for a wide angle I wouldn't suggest the sigma since it's a variable aperture lens same with the canon Ef-s lens. I would say get the tokina 11-16mm since it's a constant 2.8 and the overall build quality surpasses the sigma and canon
And I don't agree with the primes being better for video. for lowlight, yes. But personally I have a 50mm 1.2 L and 85mm 1.2 L and I still prefer the 24-70 2.8 or 70-200 2.8 II IS for shooting video (btw there all company lenses not my property except 24-70mm). For me a aperture under 2 has to shallow depth of field which can result, as video doesn't have autofocus, in really slight unsharpness which you can't notice on the display sometimes
@indemaTROY I had it but gave it to my sister and got a 24-70 f2.8, which is very slightly more expensive. It's not got IS but what really makes it good for zoom lens is f2.8
@MattsMacintosh is there just NO WAY of getting a good shallow DOF when you have a wide-angle lens like that Sigma on? when you shoot mostly with those Prime lenses [like the 50mm 1.8] -and then you switch to the Sigma= it definitely ruins everything since there is NO continuity in the look of the shot.
So, is it possible to set that Not everything will be in focus in those wide-zoom lenses?
Ha! That gave me confidence- I got a 60D with a kit lens, then got a 50mm 1.8, then I got the 24-70mm 2.8L! Just like you said, ha :) ... so next you say get a wide-angle. That's what I thought...
My DSLR is one from before video but yeah a good lens obviously helps. So if I move bodies do the upgrade.. I would go for a 50mm/35mm..prime. Something very sharp and small but good performance.
Great over view of the lenses but I am still lost sorry. Like I will use the camera to record reviews of products, tutorials and vlog so which is the best lenses in this case? I thinking its the first one you talked about and from my understanding is it true that lower the MM the more expensive it is?
Hi there, I have a problem with my canon T2i, when I'm recording video.... everytime I zoom with it I see the light exposure changes (light flickers a bit in the image) but all my settings are maunal. Do you what could cause this?
hey i have a canon 60d but im a windows user. Its really hard to edit footage that is in .mov format. Do you know if there is a setting change so i can record in something easier for me to edit with but still in 720p or 1080p quality?
@MattsMacintosh For strictly video purposes, is the 60D worth the extra money? Or would the T3i be better, along with using the extra money to purchase a better lens?
But, Matt, I don't mean to diss you. You give very good recommendations for beginners or people who just want to recording. I'm just anal about lenses. I've been doing it for years and I have my biases. LOL! FILM RULES!!! But I do love the ease of digital. I actually have my own dark room.
Nikon makes the best lenses. That's why you see most Cannon owners with a lens adapter and a Nikon Lens. NIkon is an optics company, Cannon is a Copy Machine company that happens to make cameras. If you want an awesome camera, buy a NIkon D3S it will practically shoot in the dark. Hardly any picture noise whatsoever. Although it will be obsolete. But if you are going to buy a lens, buy an adapter and a Nikon lens they are just made much better. Their depth of field is much better. 12years exp.
@TexasToast09 First, you misspelled Canon. Second, Canon made cameras long before they made copiers. Third, I have never seen a video shooter use a Nikon lens (which is what this video was about). Forth, the D3S, while awesome for stills, only shoots video in 720 (which, again is the focus of this video). Lastly, depth of field is a product math- the focal ratio and the sensor size. A lens by ANYONE will have the same DOF if its the same f-ratio on the same camera.
@GoingBackToCheney depth of field has nothing to do with the sensor size, I will get the same depth of field if I use Dx or full framed sensor. Also a lot of Canon users use Nikon lenses. Look at all the pros, Most of them use D3S and nikon lenses. Canon hasn't got anything that even comes close to being as good as the D3S, Besides no pro is going to use a DSLR to shoot video. DSLR are built for stills. Also, Nikon is a full focused optics company.
@TexasToast09 Sensor size 100% affects DOF at a given field of view because of the crop factor (maybe because you don’t shoot digital you didn't know that).
@TexasToast09 Second, You’re right no professional shoots video with a DSLR. Only Danfun Dennis, Greg Yaitanes, Philip Bloom, and, oh yeah, George Lucas and James Cameron (among many, many others). No professionals, just people that make Sundance, Emmy, and Oscar winners. By the way, they all use the Canon 5D MkII because the “optical” company Nikon doesn’t care about the video market.
@GoingBackToCheney Actually, Texastoast is right, as long as it is the same focal length and the same apature you will get the same DOF and Canon is full of crap! They are ruining Cameras and newbs like you think they are for shooting video. If you want to shoot video, buy a professional VIDEO camera with lenses. DSLRs are for taking stills, thats why Texastoast is right when he says Nikon makes a better camera. DSLRs are made for Stills and thats how Nikon builds them! for real photographers.
@Imwhite1211 Re-read my comment. I said "for a given field of view", meaning with a cropped sensor, you are going to have to adjust your distance to the subject, thereby change the DOF. I also agree that Nikon makes better still cameras, but there is no way you are going to convince me that its better to buy a $20,000 video camera than a $5000 DSLR for the average person (and in many cases, the pros agree, like I mentioned above).
@GoingBackToCheney Worse, manual DSLR focus won't work in real-time because the finder goes black while shooting video. You can't see much looking at a 3" LCD as things move around.
For use by a single photographer, you can't get DSLRs to focus on things that move. If you can't shoot things that move, then why are you trying to shoot video? Video and movies need to track focus on things that move; that's the whole point.
@halo3effects You must have failed reading comprehension in the first grade. Re-read my comment. I said "for a given field of view", meaning with a cropped sensor, you are going to have to adjust your distance to the subject or adjust your focal length, thereby changing the DOF. Also, with brilliant comments like that, I hope you enjoy staying a virgin your whole life.
@GoingBackToCheney Bokeh describes the rendition of out-of-focus points of light.
Bokeh is different from sharpness. Sharpness is what happens at the point of best focus. Bokeh is what happens away from the point of best focus.
Bokeh describes the appearance, or "feel," of out-of-focus areas. Bokeh is not how far something is out-of-focus, bokeh is the character of whatever blur is there.
@GoingBackToCheney The problem with DSLR video is that it's really only useful for large-budget productions, where a DSLR is merely sitting-in for a real $250,000 35mm motion-picture camera.
If Hollywood uses the 5D Mark II to shoot major motion pictures, then why isn't it good enough for me?
Simple: DSLRs have no real autofocus! They all claim some sort, but it doesn't really work, at least not if the subject is moving, which is the whole point of movies.
@GoingBackToCheney You don't know what you are talking about. How does the size of the flat surface of the image plane be it Fx or Dx effect the DOF of the lens? It's all focusing on the same spot, the DOF of the lens corresponds to your apature setting. What you are talking about is Bokeh, All lenses have different Bokeh characteristics which corresponds to the focal length of the lenses, apature, and other factors.
I have the Canon T3i and its my first DSLR camera, but when I shoot video in low light (shadow), I get some noise. Is there a good quality lens that could reduce noise or is it just a setting? I usually keep my ISO on auto.

okay... so im filming on a canon t2i and want to get a my first basic prime lens... however the canon 28mm and sigma 30mm are a little steep in price... would it be a good idea to just pick up a nikon 35mm F1.8 for only $200, and a nikon to canon lens adapter for $15? wouldnt this do the same job for me considering im working on a cropped sensor?

my recommendations
-first buy tamron 17-50mm f2.8 (great zoom lens and really fast!)
-then the sigma 30mm f1.4 (very good for low light shooting)
-last but not least tokina 11-16mm f2.8 (best bang for the buck wide angle)

I would say get the tokina 11-16mm since it's a constant 2.8 and the overall build quality surpasses the sigma and canon

sk84starz 7 months ago
And I don't agree with the primes being better for video. for lowlight, yes. But personally I have a 50mm 1.2 L and 85mm 1.2 L and I still prefer the 24-70 2.8 or 70-200 2.8 II IS for shooting video (btw there all company lenses not my property except 24-70mm). For me a aperture under 2 has to shallow depth of field which can result, as video doesn't have autofocus, in really slight unsharpness which you can't notice on the display sometimes
OrsonMyles 7 months ago
What do you think about the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L? Or would the F4 not give enough Bokah or light for video?
indemaTROY 7 months ago
@indemaTROY I had it but gave it to my sister and got a 24-70 f2.8, which is very slightly more expensive. It's not got IS but what really makes it good for zoom lens is f2.8

AirGrisham 9 months ago 8
@AirGrisham Definitely. I would say you can follow these guidelines no matter what brand of lens you are looking for.
MattsMacintosh 9 months ago 15
@MattsMacintosh is there just NO WAY of getting a good shallow DOF when you have a wide-angle lens like that Sigma on? when you shoot mostly with those Prime lenses [like the 50mm 1.8] -and then you switch to the Sigma= it definitely ruins everything since there is NO continuity in the look of the shot.
So, is it possible to set that Not everything will be in focus in those wide-zoom lenses?
eladbari 8 months ago
Ha! That gave me confidence- I got a 60D with a kit lens, then got a 50mm 1.8, then I got the 24-70mm 2.8L! Just like you said, ha :) ... so next you say get a wide-angle. That's what I thought...
flobber238 9 months ago
My DSLR is one from before video but yeah a good lens obviously helps. So if I move bodies do the upgrade.. I would go for a 50mm/35mm..prime. Something very sharp and small but good performance.

But, Matt, I don't mean to diss you. You give very good recommendations for beginners or people who just want to recording. I'm just anal about lenses. I've been doing it for years and I have my biases. LOL! FILM RULES!!! But I do love the ease of digital. I actually have my own dark room.
TexasToast09 1 year ago
Nikon makes the best lenses. That's why you see most Cannon owners with a lens adapter and a Nikon Lens. NIkon is an optics company, Cannon is a Copy Machine company that happens to make cameras. If you want an awesome camera, buy a NIkon D3S it will practically shoot in the dark. Hardly any picture noise whatsoever. Although it will be obsolete. But if you are going to buy a lens, buy an adapter and a Nikon lens they are just made much better. Their depth of field is much better. 12years exp.
TexasToast09 1 year ago
@TexasToast09 First, you misspelled Canon. Second, Canon made cameras long before they made copiers. Third, I have never seen a video shooter use a Nikon lens (which is what this video was about). Forth, the D3S, while awesome for stills, only shoots video in 720 (which, again is the focus of this video). Lastly, depth of field is a product math- the focal ratio and the sensor size. A lens by ANYONE will have the same DOF if its the same f-ratio on the same camera.
GoingBackToCheney 1 year ago

GoingBackToCheney 1 year ago
@TexasToast09 Second, You’re right no professional shoots video with a DSLR. Only Danfun Dennis, Greg Yaitanes, Philip Bloom, and, oh yeah, George Lucas and James Cameron (among many, many others). No professionals, just people that make Sundance, Emmy, and Oscar winners. By the way, they all use the Canon 5D MkII because the “optical” company Nikon doesn’t care about the video market.
GoingBackToCheney 1 year ago
@GoingBackToCheney Actually, Texastoast is right, as long as it is the same focal length and the same apature you will get the same DOF and Canon is full of crap! They are ruining Cameras and newbs like you think they are for shooting video. If you want to shoot video, buy a professional VIDEO camera with lenses. DSLRs are for taking stills, thats why Texastoast is right when he says Nikon makes a better camera. DSLRs are made for Stills and thats how Nikon builds them! for real photographers.
Imwhite1211 1 year ago
@Imwhite1211 Re-read my comment. I said "for a given field of view", meaning with a cropped sensor, you are going to have to adjust your distance to the subject, thereby change the DOF. I also agree that Nikon makes better still cameras, but there is no way you are going to convince me that its better to buy a $20,000 video camera than a $5000 DSLR for the average person (and in many cases, the pros agree, like I mentioned above).
GoingBackToCheney 1 year ago
@GoingBackToCheney Worse, manual DSLR focus won't work in real-time because the finder goes black while shooting video. You can't see much looking at a 3" LCD as things move around.
For use by a single photographer, you can't get DSLRs to focus on things that move. If you can't shoot things that move, then why are you trying to shoot video? Video and movies need to track focus on things that move; that's the whole point.
Lady you don't know what you are talking about.

TexasToast09 1 year ago
