Had this happen a couple of times when I was a kid. It takes really cold temps, with no wind or snow. The ice is very smooth and hard. When you skate on it, you can see down into the water, fish go flying, it feels like you're flying. Does not happen very often up here in Mass., snow or melt/freeze cycles wreck the perfect ice.

Black ice as I can remember growing up back east was the colder it was the faster the lake froze and the harder the ice was with less oxygen in the actual ice. Favorite ice to skate on outside!! First time I watched a video like this and as soon as the video stated it sparked many of good memories.
