It's free until you start using apps again... It will eventually fill back up, then you must use the app again. But the app isn't even in the app store anymore, so it's not that big of deal anymore.

No. You can't increase the SSD space of the iPhone. This video shows how you can free the RAM, which is completely differrent. And even with this, you could never get over 128 MB RAM (iPod touch 1G/2G and iPhone and 3G) or 256 MB RAM (iPod touch 3G and iPhone 3G S).

"System Activity Monitor: 3GS Update! With Free Memory and Battery Level" works great too. A bit more expensive though. And I have Free Memory, iStat Pro, and Memory Info. iStat's free memory feature was removed though.
