Well I think Alec Ogletree is the answer at safety. He is only going to get better, plus playing in Grantham's defense is going to make him an even better player than anyone of could have dreamed of under the previous!
this is when i loved uga still do actually but even more and im from ny mostly i like a.j green, prince miller, and rennie curran since they drafted stafford and moreno i hope a.j stay for his senior year
all about pressure off the edge. none last year. They need to move Geno some on either edge. We have so many good DTs. Edge pressure sets up everything. Especially the Safeties. If we can, Bryan is going to make serious plays with his speed and Reshad can step up in the box like Thomas Davis and punish the run. He just needs to be more disciplined. LBs are going to be fine. Rennie will make plays. Jeremy Longo is a hard core white boy w/ with heart and speed and Kiante is a freak of nature.
what ever happened to those punishing defences that we had in 02,03,04. all we have now is a pussy def who gets burned by florida year in and year out.FIRE MARTINEZ!!!!
Our d isn't that bad dude. I agree we didn't have the tenacity that i like, but Rennie will be leading the defense this year and I think we will be much improved because we'll have Jeff Owens back, who is an All-SEC interior lineman.
Plus, your argument doesn't work. We lost to Florida in '02, '03, '05(because we didn't have Shockley, not because of the d), '06, and '08. I think it's a mental issue with Florida, not a physical ability issue.
that just proves my point even better. we have all these all americans and yet we still allowed 3, 40 points games last year. in willies carrer he has had 11 teams go over 30 points, with brian van gorder that happened oncce and that was a loss to the eventual national champions... LSU 2003
I'm not saying that Willie's better than Brian Van Gorder, because he is not! But I think we're a little hard on Willie! This year will be a good test, though. If we stay healthy and we keep giving up 30+ points, it'll be off with his head next winter.
I've got faith in him, though. Nobody was complaining about him when we took Colt Brennan's head off in the Sugar Bowl. Or when our defense came up huge against Tebow in '07(even though we gave up 30). And the huge second half performance vs. VT.
our defense will be fine as long as we learn to wrap up. out biggest problems on D in 2008 were poor fundamentals and penalties. That blame falls on the players as well as the coaches.
The heat is on Willie now. If our defense performs as poorly as they did last year and Richt still sticks with his old college buddy, then the heat is gonna get turned up on Richt. That's something he hasn't had to deal with since he took the UGA job.
he probably should have been out after this year. our D has progressively gotten worse since BVG left. problem is if you're gonna fire a D.C. you better have somebody in waiting. we couldn't get anybody last year like a Dick Bumpas, Muschamp, Bud Foster, etc., so you stick with what you got. nobody wants to see another "Cool Breeze" Ramsey incident. but in general, the fan base is pretty unhappy with CWM, so yeah, one more bad year and i think he's out.
i'll say this though, and i'm not trying to deflect blame, but we didn't have anything remotely resembling a pass rush last year, and that's something CMR has always had. that's not totally on willie. i.e. Pollack, Sir Charles, Q. Moses, Marcus Howard. Our D badly needed a pass rusher last year. Hopefully one of the redshirts can step up.
Our secondary struggled last year, but QBs were given all day in the pocket. If we can get pressure on the QB in 09 the D will be much much much better.
Put that 2003 defense with last year's offense...wow. That defense was the best in school history; they had it all. Great pass rush, great run defense, solid secondary and SPEED to burn.
Regardless, I would take any BVG defense over CWM's defenses any Saturday in a season.
I miss disgusting, punishing hits by any given player. Now we have a bunch of fucking pussies in the secondary, and linebackers that like to stand around and get blocked.
Where did our balls go? Where the fuck is the intensity??
Your questions can be answered with two words: Willie Martinez. Since he took over, UGA has given up 30+ points 11 times. Under Van Gorder, that happened once in a loss to eventual national champion, LSU.
lol he didnt mention georgia when he introduced himself for the panthers giants game on nbc, he said his high school instead, he must not like georgia for some reason
because georgia doesn't have a standout safety now like they did when they had davis, jones, blue, battle and johnson. they are missing leadership in the secondary.
@CitrusPins I have to dissagree with you a little bit. CJ Byrd, Reshad Jones, and all the other DB's we've had under Willie Martinez are just as talented. They're all strong and fast just like Thomas Davis, Greg Blue, Bruce Thorton, Kentrell Curry, etc. The only problem was CWM terrible coaching, he didn't coach up players like Van Gorder, he didn't he didn't have players playing man or blitzing alot. He went away from what had worked for so long like a ediot.
cause we don't got jack shit now on defense besides curran & Gamble are defense last year was good this year were shit back in 2002-2005 they were the shit on defense
dude where is all the footage of this guy, he was a fucking first team all fucking american for Gods sake. my favorite sec defensive player ever by far...fearless
ALL TIME FAVORITE UGA DEFENSIVE PLAYER !!! I love this guy. I remember ESPN did some top 10 hits of the first half of his senior season, he had like 6 of them. iceoutboy... get me an autographed jersey !!!!
Davis was a great player, no doubt, but he pretty much single-handedly cost UGA the Tennessee game in 2004. He bit on not one but two play fakes to leave his receivers wide open while giving up Tennessee's only two touchdowns. I can't blame Tennessee for taking advantage of Davis's aggressive style of play in stopping the run. Still, it would be nice if UGA had just one player on the team who could hit like Davis did.
It's not really the same. Curran is a LB while Davis and Blue spent most of their time in the secondary making receivers regret trying to catch the ball. Hits like that make receivers get "short-armed" as they say. I saw that UGA is going after a kid for 2010 who seems like a copy of Davis. He's about the same size and scouts say he is a vicious hitter. A guy in the spring game, Gloer, was laying wood to people but I don't think he's a starter, not sure why since he's as fast as anyone else.
hes not really my next door neighbor but his mom lives next to me and during off season he comes to stay at his moms house so he kinda is and kinda aint my neighbor
damn about time somebody put a UGA Thomas Davis video up. Yall remember that hit on South Carolina's QB? He tried to scramble and was going forward, then Davis completely knocked him backwards and caused the fumble, was one of the hardest hits I've ever seen.
