Okay. I have a quick question, for some of this video, the bit your driving on has two lanes, then a barrier then what looks like three or four lanes travelling in the same direction. Are the two lanes pool car only or is it something different?
@mryoheylol Actually it's a 3-3-3-3 configuration, the lanes I'm in are for cars only, the outside three lanes are for Cars, Trucks, Buses and whatever, each set of lanes has their own exits and entrances. This "double-barreld" configuration was built in to the turnpike in the late 1960's, early 1970's when traffic in that area became heavier (The Turnpike was originally built in 1951).
I agree with you in your reply to Sam60793, I don't really like taking the Turnpike, especially when going to MA. Going 95 is more scenic than just driving down a road with trees around it and not a single lampost for miles.
I am not from USA, but I thought Interstate highways were free, however thi sis not the case with this portion of I-95, I've been in NJ several times, I know NJ Turnpike and NJ Parkway. Why I-95 in NJ is not free?
@racsito39 The Turnpike was built in 1951 as a Toll Road, the Interstate system was built in 1956 and some toll roads were grandfathered in to the Interstate System like the NJTPK, Pa Turnpike, NY Thruway and more (Some Toll Roads built after 1956 were also included in the interstate system). The section of the NJ Turnpike from Exit 6 south to Exit 1 is not marked as an interstate, just the Turnpike.
Hey Freewayjim, I have a quick question. Some New Jerseyans like to give the turnpike another name, the New Jersey Speedway, since the New Jersey State Police won't pull you over unless you do 80+. Do you believe them when they say this? I don't, since during the month of July 2009, on the turnpike alone the NJ State Police wrote more than 820 speeding tickets!
@MyMultimedia I have driven the turnpike once in the last four years so I really don't have anything to base an opinion on with regards to your question.
@Sam60793 Because that's what I do! check my other videos. Otherwise t would have been a boring, slow 20-25 minute video, which would be too big for YT.
@TerraziUtopia2010 Oh yeah....wize it always smell like somebody farted between exit 13 & 14.I used to always pickup containers from the marina in Jersey city.Dispatch would always send me outhere around 4 or 5 pm .....what an asshole he was.
I live in Central New Jersey, and I have been on this part of the NJ Turnpike either going to Newark Liberty International Airport, Medieval Times in Lyndhurst, or New York on bus trips from the Trenton Area.
@MrTherockobama I'm wondering, what New Jersey videos were you thinking of for Freewayjim? A video of the Jersey Shore (or should I say "Joisey Showaa")?
Just reply to this comment and tell me, what video(s) would best suit Freewayjim's future videos if he went up to New Jersey? I support this suggestion for more New Jersey videos, MrTherockobama!
Freeway Jim you should come to NY and take the Taconic State Parkway all the way to Albany it's a very nice drive and many small towns are along the roadway and even farmland. It's an amazing parkway to drive on
@dvferyance New Jersey's got a lot of gardens in the southern tier of the state. The northern tier where this video was filmed is where the industrial wastelands you're talking about are.
@adawilkes1 You are right about it being jammed at times but the Turnpike is still better than any highway east of the Hudson in the Greater NYC area, those are antiquated in a big way. I also agree that I-278 is the worst.
This is probably my favorite video by you, Jim. Not to mention I just discovered a pretty awesome song. :]
Also, I've been meaning to see the New Jersey Turnpike. I've always heard about Jersey drivers in Maryland, and I knew of the NJTP's insanity, but I had to see it in action. Holy crap.
I must say New Jersey is one of the most overrated and overvalued areas of the country.. Same with Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maryland, California, and New York...
i saw part of I-95 on amtrak last year--looks like it was a lot of traffic on it. I was travelling from Boston to Washington DC. I plan on driving part of this stretch next year in my Chevy on vacation.
This vid is on my turf . You just drove past my building in Newark Exit 14. I can see the pike from my window. What an enjoyable ride. That Black bridge structure at 3:10 is the Pulaski Skyway. Just great man ! And the music ! Perfect. Ya gotta get off at 16 W to get to the Bada Bing.
@Freewayjim I driven the A.C. Expressway cause I've gone up to Atlantic City every now and then, and the tricky part is where I-295 meets up with the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76) and I-676 and US 130 which I know is probably one of the worse and most confusing interchanges in the country which I have heard recently that it is being straightened out to make it less confusing.
To some this may sound weird...but that was awesome! I was born in Elizabeth, but moved to FL when I was 14. It's been a long time now, and today I was suddenly feeling homesick. I got a thrill just seeing the exit sign to Elizabeth! LOL! Thanks, Freewayjim.
Even though I now live in Wyoming, every time I am back east I inclide the NJ Turnpike in my trip plans. It's so much "back home again" feeling. But where are those third lanes down south I ordered 20 years ago...?
i drive the njtp mostly from the 80 to exit 14a off the 78 njtp ext. honestly for being a truck driver i don't find it that bad, usually i cross either 4 am ish', mid afternoon, around 4 pm or around 10 pm. and honestly always a sweet drive at night but during the day it's not that bad as long as you know where you are going but besides that the spot that screws me up the most is the split for the east and west side going north i prefer the west side but usually wind up on the east side...lol
Hi Freeway! I need a real drivers answer to a straightforward question: What is the best way to get from the NJTP to the LIE 495. My destination is Huntington, Long Island. My origin is Washington, DC. -MapQuest says the George Washington Bridge -a friend says go through Fresh Kills and avoid NYC.
Driving around New York is always a challenge; please send me some feedback so I can impress my passengers with my highway savvy!
Well, one option would be to take the NJTP to Exit 13 and use I-278 East (Geothals & Verrazano Narrows Bridges) to the LIE, you'll miss all of Manhattan that way.
Honestly, there is no "good" way to where you are going.
@Thoughtfulguy68 take exit 10 for the outerbridge crossing and then go to I-278 E and then take the belt parkway to the cross island to the long island expressway east
The car only/all vehicle config will soon be longer once it is extended further south from Exit 8A to Exit 6 (PA Turnpike) as part of the "completion" of I-95 in NJ. However I doubt it will ever be extended south of Exit 6 because you have the oddity of I-295, a free road built after the NJTP about 50 feet west of the NJTP from Exit 6 all the way down to the Del Mem Br.....its quite odd to say the least to see and drive, two totally separate freeways within eyesight of each other.
I was just thinking, this local/express setup lasts for just over 50 miles, from Rossmoor, NJ to Manhattan. Its probably the longest such setup in the world.
It's not exactly local/express. There are the cars/truck lanes, which serve all exits, plus traffic can enter either lanes, (depending what type of vehicle) when they enter the turnpike, plus you can't switch to one another.
ur right at 1:12 about that part of the turnpike being complete mayhem. when i drove north from south amboy going home i was driving with the flow of traffic going 85 mph. but thats only between exits 12 and 14abc for some reason after that when it splits it slows back down to 65
when the turnpike crosses over the northeast corridor train tracks they seriously need to put up a barrier!!!! if any vehicle drove off that bridge it would be a disaster b/c of the electrical wires beneath
I hate why they didn't put a grey gate when you cross the MARC train tracks at 3:16, I like crossing those with a gate on the bridge. That's dangerous as that will scare some drivers when they cross it.
haha my exit is right on 16W right by the giants stadium. I bet you saw the new stadium they are building. Also what camera are you using the quality was amazing.
Look at it this way if this area cared about fluidity of traffic theyd a said f--- local opposition and build 95 as originally planned bt the Trenton Loop and 287.....the NJTP is wayyyy over capacity bt EXITS 6 and 8A......maybe even 11.....as well as down at Exit 1 esp SB
LOL trust me 276/95 will NEVER be built its been proposed for 25+ years and still not a shovelful of dirt has been turned. It is currently held up by local opposition...and that opposition will win :) THIS AREA SUCKS!
Do you mean the Somerset Freeway? Yeah, that thing is NEVER gonna come into existence. Thirty-five solid years of freeway revolts have seen to that. Apparently, having a clear view of the golf course is more important to suburban New Jersey than being able to travel between Philadelphia and NYC without gouging one's eyes out in despair. At least the numbering will make sense once PENNDOT finishes the I-95/I-276 interchange.
Ah... the portion of the Jersey Turnpike I've only been on once (in the opposite direction). My main trek to points south via the Turnpike takes me from EXIT 10 (I-287) down to the Del Mem Br.
But definitely like you said in the video, an interesting ride. I remember once traveling near EXIT 7 where there was a car that went from the middle lane, to the left lane and then skidded out of control off the right side of the road.
@ 3:47 pause and just take a moment to enjoy that amazing view and think about all the stuff thats going on in Manhattan millions of people walking around, taxis every were, Broadway shows playing, people shopping on 5th ave. and think about all the history laying in front of you, all your ancestors were here, think about back when it was called New Amsterdam and all the famous landmarks. all just about 15 miles in front of you
I go to Jersey every once and again and for one thing, I always take Exit 11 (Garden State Parkway to exit 109) and Exit 14C (Jersey City/Holland Tunnel) since my relatives live off that ramp. Besides, during the rush hour, the Turnpike can be backed up. And since the GSP is closed to trucks, they have their dual lane on the Turnpike.
It is from the northern terminus until the exchange with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Extension, where it abruptly ends, which accurately reflects its routing once the new interchange between I-95 and I-276 in Pennsylvania is completed in 2011. At that time, I-95 will be rerouted onto the extension then onto the Turnpike, and I-195 will be rerouted onto what is now I-95 and I-295 around Trenton, causing I-295 to end where it meets I-195. Confusing, yes.
I-95 is signed on the Turnpike from Exits 6 to 18.
Highway signs at I-287 at the Jersey Turnpike does refer to the roadway as both the Jersey Turnpike and I-95, and the onramps at Exit 10 do sign I-95 NORTH and I-95 SOUTH.
From Exits 6 to 1, on the mainline the signs all say "TO I-95"
yes one goes eastward for commuters to nyc via Lincoln Tunnel and the one Westward is for commuters going to the George Washington Bridge, but they do meet up before the Geo. Wash. Brg.
5 / 5! Congrats to NYGiantsFan845 to be the first one to comment on a video thats probably gonna be one of Freewayjims most viewed videos, i love the view at 3:46

Wash. Brg.
its like 35e/w in the Twin Cities and DFW

I'd suggest that person see what else is on YouTube and what else has been printed in postcards, photos & books over the last 100+ years. Puh-leze.
