  • lol i wish all cars on the turnpike moved this fast!

  • 1:42 Shop Rite Truck!

  • @ turbin: its in ur mouth, close it

  • To dangerous for this highway or something's to do.

  • AAAAHHH....New Jersey!! Where the smell of sulpher is always in the air!!

  • The New Jersey People With Driving Two Lines

  • New Jersey Turnpike Liked This Road See In 1951 Opened I-95

  • Ppl drive like douche bags on the pike!!

  • Okay. I have a quick question, for some of this video, the bit your driving on has two lanes, then a barrier then what looks like three or four lanes travelling in the same direction. Are the two lanes pool car only or is it something different?

  • @mryoheylol Actually it's a 3-3-3-3 configuration, the lanes I'm in are for cars only, the outside three lanes are for Cars, Trucks, Buses and whatever, each set of lanes has their own exits and entrances. This "double-barreld" configuration was built in to the turnpike in the late 1960's, early 1970's when traffic in that area became heavier (The Turnpike was originally built in 1951).

  • @mryoheylol Check out my Chicago Dan Ryan Expressway Video, it is similar (3-4-4-3) to NJ.

  • @Freewayjim Yeah but why? What are they separated for?

  • @mryoheylol In the NJ Turnpike's case it is to keep car & truck traffic separated for safety reasons, that is a very heavily travled truck route.

  • @Freewayjim Alright, thanks!

  • I agree with you in your reply to Sam60793, I don't really like taking the Turnpike, especially when going to MA. Going 95 is more scenic than just driving down a road with trees around it and not a single lampost for miles.

  • I am not from USA, but I thought Interstate highways were free, however thi sis not the case with this portion of I-95, I've been in NJ several times, I know NJ Turnpike and NJ Parkway. Why I-95 in NJ is not free?

  • @racsito39 The Turnpike was built in 1951 as a Toll Road, the Interstate system was built in 1956 and some toll roads were grandfathered in to the Interstate System like the NJTPK, Pa Turnpike, NY Thruway and more (Some Toll Roads built after 1956 were also included in the interstate system). The section of the NJ Turnpike from Exit 6 south to Exit 1 is not marked as an interstate, just the Turnpike.

  • @Freewayjim Wow your smart. I wanna live in the US SOOOOO BAD!! I LOVE their highways!!

  • Hey Freewayjim, I have a quick question. Some New Jerseyans like to give the turnpike another name, the New Jersey Speedway, since the New Jersey State Police won't pull you over unless you do 80+. Do you believe them when they say this? I don't, since during the month of July 2009, on the turnpike alone the NJ State Police wrote more than 820 speeding tickets!

  • @MyMultimedia I have driven the turnpike once in the last four years so I really don't have anything to base an opinion on with regards to your question.

  • why did you fast foward it

  • @Sam60793 Because that's what I do! check my other videos. Otherwise t would have been a boring, slow 20-25 minute video, which would be too big for YT.

  • Im going to new jersey in a week if i can get a video camera i could try to make some new jersey vids

  • i missed this one way back when awesome sopranos hommage

  • @jenzeppelin Thank you! it was either The Sopranos, Bruce or Bon Jovi, lol.

  • Gotta love the way everybody is doing at least 80!

  • I live in Linden NJ right by exit 13

  • @TerraziUtopia2010 Oh yeah....wize it always smell like somebody farted between exit 13 & 14.I used to always pickup containers from the marina in Jersey city.Dispatch would always send me outhere around 4 or 5 pm .....what an asshole he was.

  • I live in Central New Jersey, and I have been on this part of the NJ Turnpike either going to Newark Liberty International Airport, Medieval Times in Lyndhurst, or New York on bus trips from the Trenton Area.

  • No mention of the car/truck lanes?

  • There is a lot of powerlines

  • When I am watching this freeway film, the most hateful thing is the signs "NO TRUCKS OR BUSES IN LEFT LANE" posted in I-95.

  • 16 E is tied up in traffic year round.

  • You should make more New Jersey vids

  • @MrTherockobama Yeah, if I get up that way again I would like to.

  • @MrTherockobama I'm wondering, what New Jersey videos were you thinking of for Freewayjim? A video of the Jersey Shore (or should I say "Joisey Showaa")?

Just reply to this comment and tell me, what video(s) would best suit Freewayjim's future videos if he went up to New Jersey? I support this suggestion for more New Jersey videos, MrTherockobama!

  • Your video makes me miss my home state of Jersey all the way down here in GA - LOVE THE SOPRANOS SOUNDRACK-GREAT VID MAN

  • @Jerseybubblegum Thank you!

  • I must have watched this video over 20 times and it wasnt just till now that I noticed you spelled interesting wrong at 2:13 xD.

  • @rev4life03 and you had to point it out? :P Fact is I spell fine, I'm just a I'm a lousy typist and proof reader.

  • @Freewayjim

Don't worry about him FreewayJim. He is a low life to point out something minute like that.

  • @79Testo Thanks man.

  • @79Testo woah, easy there it was a joke.

  • Freeway Jim you should come to NY and take the Taconic State Parkway all the way to Albany it's a very nice drive and many small towns are along the roadway and even farmland. It's an amazing parkway to drive on

  • Right on Freeway Jim!

  • Why in the world do they call New Jersey the garden state? It's just miles and miles of industrial wastelands.

  • @dvferyance New Jersey's got a lot of gardens in the southern tier of the state. The northern tier where this video was filmed is where the industrial wastelands you're talking about are.

  • From 1:02 to 1:05, and then again at 1:45, I spotted planes! I guess they're approaching Newark Liberty Airport?

  • @spaceplanepilot Yes, the airport is to the left.

  • @adawilkes1 Thanks for the compliments. I wasn't counting the parkways, completely different animal.

  • @adawilkes1 You are right about it being jammed at times but the Turnpike is still better than any highway east of the Hudson in the Greater NYC area, those are antiquated in a big way. I also agree that I-278 is the worst.

  • lol IKEA XD

  • Comment removed

  • Oh yes, this is oh so familiar. You should return to the NJ Turnpike during mid winter....LOL

  • favorite highway

  • This is probably my favorite video by you, Jim. Not to mention I just discovered a pretty awesome song. :]

Also, I've been meaning to see the New Jersey Turnpike. I've always heard about Jersey drivers in Maryland, and I knew of the NJTP's insanity, but I had to see it in action. Holy crap.

  • @onorebakasama -Thanks! What you saw in this video was tame compared to other times I've driven that road.

  • I must say New Jersey is one of the most overrated and overvalued areas of the country.. Same with Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maryland, California, and New York...

  • i saw part of I-95 on amtrak last year--looks like it was a lot of traffic on it. I was travelling from Boston to Washington DC. I plan on driving part of this stretch next year in my Chevy on vacation.

  • What an AWESOME video!

  • @thesassiwench Thank you!

  • This vid is on my turf . You just drove past my building in Newark Exit 14. I can see the pike from my window. What an enjoyable ride. That Black bridge structure at 3:10 is the Pulaski Skyway. Just great man ! And the music ! Perfect. Ya gotta get off at 16 W to get to the Bada Bing.

  • @vintagezigg NJ up bright and early and on the move! I dig 1.48 with the airplane adding its approval!

  • This is some exciting stuff..........

  • Thanks for the memories!!! I've been transplanted to Indianapolis... Use to live AND drive the Turnpike..

  • No video of the A/C expressway

  • @platformusa2: No. I've never driven the AC Expressway to be honest.

  • @Freewayjim Do you have any video of I-78?

  • @TheWeatherMaster: No such luck.

  • @Freewayjim I driven the A.C. Expressway cause I've gone up to Atlantic City every now and then, and the tricky part is where I-295 meets up with the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76) and I-676 and US 130 which I know is probably one of the worse and most confusing interchanges in the country which I have heard recently that it is being straightened out to make it less confusing.

  • My trips after visiting from Philadelphia.

  • To some this may sound weird...but that was awesome! I was born in Elizabeth, but moved to FL when I was 14. It's been a long time now, and today I was suddenly feeling homesick. I got a thrill just seeing the exit sign to Elizabeth! LOL! Thanks, Freewayjim.

  • why are you going so slowly, i rarely go less than 90 on the parkway and the turnpike...

  • 3 words. GARDEN STATE PARKWAY, No Trucks!!!

  • Even though I now live in Wyoming, every time I am back east I inclide the NJ Turnpike in my trip plans. It's so much "back home again" feeling. But where are those third lanes down south I ordered 20 years ago...?

  • The road markings on the turnpike are so wierd and unique. Almost european :p

  • lol a week ago about Christmas day I drove through the Turnpike and the traffic was busy as hell. ( Not to mention about like Minneapolis's traffic).

  • i drive the njtp mostly from the 80 to exit 14a off the 78 njtp ext. honestly for being a truck driver i don't find it that bad, usually i cross either 4 am ish', mid afternoon, around 4 pm or around 10 pm. and honestly always a sweet drive at night but during the day it's not that bad as long as you know where you are going but besides that the spot that screws me up the most is the split for the east and west side going north i prefer the west side but usually wind up on the east side...lol

  • Hi Freeway! I need a real drivers answer to a straightforward question: What is the best way to get from the NJTP to the LIE 495. My destination is Huntington, Long Island. My origin is Washington, DC. -MapQuest says the George Washington Bridge -a friend says go through Fresh Kills and avoid NYC.

Driving around New York is always a challenge; please send me some feedback so I can impress my passengers with my highway savvy!

  • Well, one option would be to take the NJTP to Exit 13 and use I-278 East (Geothals & Verrazano Narrows Bridges) to the LIE, you'll miss all of Manhattan that way.

Honestly, there is no "good" way to where you are going.

  • @Thoughtfulguy68 take exit 10 for the outerbridge crossing and then go to I-278 E and then take the belt parkway to the cross island to the long island expressway east

  • uv411 is right. take i-278

  • The car only/all vehicle config will soon be longer once it is extended further south from Exit 8A to Exit 6 (PA Turnpike) as part of the "completion" of I-95 in NJ. However I doubt it will ever be extended south of Exit 6 because you have the oddity of I-295, a free road built after the NJTP about 50 feet west of the NJTP from Exit 6 all the way down to the Del Mem Br.....its quite odd to say the least to see and drive, two totally separate freeways within eyesight of each other.

  • their is no way hell i not driving in new jersey turn pike

IH 95 is crazy in new jersey

  • I was just thinking, this local/express setup lasts for just over 50 miles, from Rossmoor, NJ to Manhattan. Its probably the longest such setup in the world.

  • You are probably right about that.

  • It's not exactly local/express. There are the cars/truck lanes, which serve all exits, plus traffic can enter either lanes, (depending what type of vehicle) when they enter the turnpike, plus you can't switch to one another.

  • ur right at 1:12 about that part of the turnpike being complete mayhem. when i drove north from south amboy going home i was driving with the flow of traffic going 85 mph. but thats only between exits 12 and 14abc for some reason after that when it splits it slows back down to 65

  • You forget to mention another song that reference the Turnpike; State Trooper by Bruce Springsteen

  • I didn't forget, I chose not to mention it :)

  • sorry to bring it up then

  • Not a problem, "America" is just a more well knpwn song.

  • Your best video IMHO

  • Thank you!

  • when the turnpike crosses over the northeast corridor train tracks they seriously need to put up a barrier!!!! if any vehicle drove off that bridge it would be a disaster b/c of the electrical wires beneath

  • I hate why they didn't put a grey gate when you cross the MARC train tracks at 3:16, I like crossing those with a gate on the bridge. That's dangerous as that will scare some drivers when they cross it.

  • haha my exit is right on 16W right by the giants stadium. I bet you saw the new stadium they are building. Also what camera are you using the quality was amazing.

  • I did not see the new stadium unfortunately.

    I use a Sony HDR-HC9 Video camera.

  • Look at it this way if this area cared about fluidity of traffic theyd a said f--- local opposition and build 95 as originally planned bt the Trenton Loop and 287.....the NJTP is wayyyy over capacity bt EXITS 6 and 8A......maybe even 11.....as well as down at Exit 1 esp SB

  • LOL trust me 276/95 will NEVER be built its been proposed for 25+ years and still not a shovelful of dirt has been turned. It is currently held up by local opposition...and that opposition will win :) THIS AREA SUCKS!

  • Do you mean the Somerset Freeway? Yeah, that thing is NEVER gonna come into existence. Thirty-five solid years of freeway revolts have seen to that. Apparently, having a clear view of the golf course is more important to suburban New Jersey than being able to travel between Philadelphia and NYC without gouging one's eyes out in despair. At least the numbering will make sense once PENNDOT finishes the I-95/I-276 interchange.

  • Ah... the portion of the Jersey Turnpike I've only been on once (in the opposite direction). My main trek to points south via the Turnpike takes me from EXIT 10 (I-287) down to the Del Mem Br.

But definitely like you said in the video, an interesting ride. I remember once traveling near EXIT 7 where there was a car that went from the middle lane, to the left lane and then skidded out of control off the right side of the road.

  • By far my favorite part of the Turnpike. From the Bayway Refinery all the way up to Xanadu. Great job!

  • Thank you,

It's my favorite part too, I'm glad I was able to film it on such a beautiful day.

  • @ 3:47 pause and just take a moment to enjoy that amazing view and think about all the stuff thats going on in Manhattan millions of people walking around, taxis every were, Broadway shows playing, people shopping on 5th ave. and think about all the history laying in front of you, all your ancestors were here, think about back when it was called New Amsterdam and all the famous landmarks. all just about 15 miles in front of you

  • Not to be a downer, but imagine driving into that on you-know-what-day, just moments after.

  • WHOA @ 1:26

  • One of my favs Jim... excellent music.. How about a little Bruce or Bon Jovi on your next NJ adventure?

  • There is some Bruce coming an a NJ-NY video I am currently working on

  • I go to Jersey every once and again and for one thing, I always take Exit 11 (Garden State Parkway to exit 109) and Exit 14C (Jersey City/Holland Tunnel) since my relatives live off that ramp. Besides, during the rush hour, the Turnpike can be backed up. And since the GSP is closed to trucks, they have their dual lane on the Turnpike.

  • Technically isn't I-95 not signed for the turnpike?

  • It is from the northern terminus until the exchange with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Extension, where it abruptly ends, which accurately reflects its routing once the new interchange between I-95 and I-276 in Pennsylvania is completed in 2011. At that time, I-95 will be rerouted onto the extension then onto the Turnpike, and I-195 will be rerouted onto what is now I-95 and I-295 around Trenton, causing I-295 to end where it meets I-195. Confusing, yes.

  • I-95 is signed on the Turnpike from Exits 6 to 18.

Highway signs at I-287 at the Jersey Turnpike does refer to the roadway as both the Jersey Turnpike and I-95, and the onramps at Exit 10 do sign I-95 NORTH and I-95 SOUTH.

From Exits 6 to 1, on the mainline the signs all say "TO I-95"

  • Haha, that intro made me laugh out loud!

  • I love industrial wastelands. Those 1950's highway lights were awesome.

  • awesome .. cant wait for the night vid ..

liked the old footage editing in the beginning and end . nice job

  • Love this song. Great video.

  • I ever wanted to see the pulaski skyway from ground, also the skyline of nyc from west.

    Thanks

Really interesting Turnpike, a higlight on every second corner

    5*

  • Jim, thanks so much for this! You did an awesome job capturing my old home!

  • NJ Turnpike...way to bring back memories from when I lived there 10 years ago

  • brings back some memories. i was on the nj turnpike a few weeks ago.

  • awesome video! I heard this section has 2 I-95s.. where one splits..?

  • Yes, they split right before the Pulaski Skyway underpass.

  • yes one goes eastward for commuters to nyc via Lincoln Tunnel and the one Westward is for commuters going to the George Washington Bridge, but they do meet up before the Geo. Wash. Brg.

its like 35e/w in the Twin Cities and DFW

  • You get a really nice view of Giants Stadium on the western section.

  • and the stupid looking Meadowlands Xanadu mall thing they built

  • Another nice one Jim.....

  • whats the big deal? we all know he's not a terrorist and hes not the only one in the world that records videos of roads in NYC

  • I'd suggest that person see what else is on YouTube and what else has been printed in postcards, photos & books over the last 100+ years. Puh-leze.

  • u should have got off exit 13 2 vist staten island-new york

  • If I did that I could not have made this video.

  • 5 / 5! Congrats to NYGiantsFan845 to be the first one to comment on a video thats probably gonna be one of Freewayjims most viewed videos, i love the view at 3:46

  • 5/5, awesome video i love that you played the sopranos theme song

  • It was either this song, Bon Jovi's "Runaway" or Motley Crue's "Kickstart My Heart".

Glad you liked it, thank you!
