And I'd like to add this: I think that 10cc's version 'works' better also because it is about a certain - rather male than female - attitude of being in love but not wanting to admit it. About being (to use your expression) haunted by the image of some woman whilst trying to 'be strong' and not to face the fact that you are somehow submitted to the power of her charms. What's everyone arguing about? It's a great song and this is a great version of a great song. Simple. I think when you hear a cover you just need to ask yourself does it add something different to the original. I think this does. Just like Everything But The Girl's cover of Kid added something different to Chrissie's original. More often than not they are tributes from one great artist to another.

i like when a good band make a cover and the result is as good or better than the original. it shows that the band really loves the song and had something relevant to add to it.
