thank you for this vid...i found it very helpful .....I think it can be so much more helpful sometimes to just watch someone else just do something then go do it yourself....rather than listening to someone ramble on and on in there own words (sometimes that makes it more confusing) Gonna put a zipper in a jacket for my son today! Thanks
@kkitomura I would sew it in by hand so the sweater doesnt stretch. It doesnt need to be that strong...just tiny running stitches, maybe double it so there is a continuous line of stitches on both sides.
I personally would do it that way. But if you must use the machine, then use some kind of stabilizing tape on the seam line to keep the sweater from stretching. The main thing you want to avoid is ripples when the zipper closes. good luc
This was really great. Can I use the same technique if I am making a linen with zipper for my crochet bags?? Or is this ideal only for inner pockets??
@philosgal This is called a 'railroad zipper' because it is like a rr track with the zipper in the center of two even margins. You can use it in any installation either with an open top a closed one as in the video.Closed is good for an inside pocket or purse. Open is good for garments especially in the back seam. The other option is a left lapped zipper usually used in skirts and other side garment closings.(I haven't made a video for that) Good luck.
@fkrinsky Thank you for the response. I will try this technique and since your tutorial was very easy to follow, I will request if you can kindly make a video about purse linings with zippers : )
In my first try it's not that well done but the second one is better
I have practiced this trick yesterday about an hour since I have a lot of fabric and zippers here which is very affordable in the market.
But I still have to practice this sometimes I'm missing the straight line it always came out like zig zag but not that what do you think it looks like slight only.
Any thanks for this tutorial helps me a lot since I'm just starting to learn.
Thanks for your kind comment...and for favoriting me. I really should do more sewing videos, but I got involved with my swan series...maybe soon I'll try another kind of zipper installation...your enthusiasm spurs me on!
Thanks for your enthusiastic response. Sometimes when I have a tricky zipper to install, particularly in a pillow (which doesn't get the same wear and tear as in clothing) I sew it in by hand with tiny running stitches or runnng back stitches. It takes about a half hour and gets the job done more neatly than if I try to work it on the machine. Never underestimate the effectiveness and ease of handstitching..It's all they had before Elias Howe! Let me know if you try it by hand. Faith
This is a WONDERFUL video! And funny TOo. I know my husband wishes i had one of those zippers for my mouth. Sometimes he clicks the remote control in my direction hoping that some miracle will happen and i will go mute!! I am wondering if you can show us how to install a zipper on something that doesn't have a seam. I want to put a zipper on the bottom of an already made big pillow (want to put fresh stuffing inside and wash ti pillow) so i want a way to install a zipper in a flat surface
I'm ghlad you got it. The only modification to make is to note that the zipper I installed was sewn in on both sides. For a zipper that opend on the top, you don't need to remove the basting threads before topstitching. If you leave them in and topstitch, it will be easier.
That is the best demonstration video ever. You make it look so easy. A lot of other people have videos but their hands are always in the way. Great job!
Thanks for such an enthusiastic response. I am glad the video was helpful. I love to sew and plan to put up more sewing videos this winter.I hope your zipper project comes out nicely:)
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I plan to post more sewing vids, but right now I am very occupied with the new swan family on our local pond. Thanks for your interest.
I'm trying to install a front fly zipper on a pair of pants that I made but can't figure it out. I'm self taught and would like to know if you can post a sample on your you tube, that would be awsome. Thanks
I will try to post a new video doing a fly front zipper this week. Please subscribe so you will receive it when it goes up! Good luck with your project.
Good luck...You may note that my zipper was closed on both sides, your's will probably be open on the top, but the technique is the same...my zipper is also set with a 'railroad' style, meaning even margins on both sides of the teeth. I think that is easiest. ..Remnember that you can always sew the topstitch part by hand, if you have trouble sewing straight on the machine.
Sorry it brought back traumatic memories. I had to tear out everything in home ec too and NEVER got a good mark on anything in that OR art class :) It's great to be old now, and beyond all that.
Snort...I FAILED Art Appreciation! The only F that I ever got in all the schooling I ever did.......
Nah...it's not traumatic at all. I long ago realized that there are certain people on this planet that are here ONLY to make others as miserable as possible.

I'm getting a hard time on doing this trick on my high speed sewing machine
kulugu 2 years ago
Good luck. This is not meant to be a high speed application, so slowing down will probably make it easier for you. Let me know if you succeed.

Cute video. You make it look so easy!
Don't laugh, but that would have taken me at least a month's worth of Home Ec classes when I was in jr. high school!
It was totally grueling for me. Our teacher kept making us tear out the stitches over and over again for months on end. Argh! :D
