While everyone else is at each others throats fighting about CART and IRL (which is stupid because the war is over and we just need to move forward with the best series we can make) I just want to mention I remember watching Buddy Lazier's reaction to his tire coming off live and it was really funny.
Nobody could pass in CART? Have you watched an Indycar race lately? Dario Franchitti actually apologized to fans over the PA system at Richmond for the horrible, single file race. It's a damn shame that were now stuck with a spec series that struggles to find sponsors, is dominated by four drivers, puts boring races on road courses and streets and sometimes ovals lately, the TV coverage is only available in 40% of US households and the attendance on race day is never too impressive.
The true Indycar fans are those who loved when CART was big and could put on damn exciting shows on either oval, road course or street circuit. That's the awesome thing about it, you need to be good at all three to be champion. Oval racing has been boring this year and they struggle to put on good races on anything else. But CART was exciting everywhere, with powerful cars that sounded awesome. It's not so much the road racing fans that complain, it's the true CART fans of the 90's too.
Well watever popular demand is, i dont care as long as i see real racing, not like 50 laps under the yellow for debris or something. I cant stand that!!!!!!!! A car spun but keeps going yet they put out a caution anyway even when it made it back to the pits!!!!!!!!!! INDYCAR IS NOT NASCAR!!!!!!!!!!!! I enjoy racing, REAL RACING.
I cant disagree with you though, Whatever most people want
I love a mixture. Yes ovals are high speed and exiting, road courses are a true challenge of skill. Any driver who can master both will be the champ... Thats why i love IRL! Although they now keep yellows out to long like nascar...
That's why everyone loved CART and we would still have that had it not been for the split. Indycars today are spec, races are boring. They finally got the aero right at Kentucky and ovals should be great from now on, but they're still slow and boring on road courses. CART had powerful, beautiful looking racecars that put on a good show on any type of track. But Tony George created the IRL and everything went downhill from there, and now we have a series struggling big time on the marketing side.
maybe street races are boring with that hideous car, but if you watch most champcar/CART/F1 races on street/road courses you will find that they are much better. buy hey its just my opinion.
It's SUPER weird that IRL doesn't have an event in Atlanta nowadays.... Really weird. They could add Night Atlanta Race. That would be awesome. Atlanta MotorSpeedway is a really great track. Nascar races are interesting in there so IRL would be awesome too....
I hope. I like NASCAR, but every week just gets old. I just wish IndyCar would get off of the road course wagon and go back to oval oriented racing. Rockingham would be cool in my opinion.
no. keep the road courses but PROMOTE the ovals. didn't you see that crowd at mid ohio? and what about st. pete debut race? 100,000+ baby. what IRL should do is go back to their original chassis.
I totally agree. It's a shame that just a few years ago there were 3 engine suppliers and 2 chassis suppliers, now we are down to just one each. All the more reason for a merger with champ car
how do people survive these crashes

@indyfan22k If you compare the 2009 ratings you will recognize that with the exception of Indy the road races had better ones.

@villy27 most of the road course were all ABC or ESPN

Street races ARE terrible. Road courses are badass tho. They should drop all street courses and add like Portland and Elkhart lake.

two of the reasons the irl stopped racing there. 1)it was dangerous 2)low ticket sales

The reason that the IRL does not run anymore at Atlanta can be found at the 18-second mark of this very video.
IllinoisHighwayMan 3 years ago
why do they still run at texas then ?
SIMIHIGH2008 3 years ago
Because that track's promoter (Eddie Gossage) actually likes IndyCar racing.
IllinoisHighwayMan 3 years ago
Except for Greg Ray breaking away from the pack, this was absolutely the best racing that Atlanta Motor Speedway ever had.

The 1996 turbos like ChampCar or the 1997 4.0 liter V8's? The V8's were great with that awesome roar.
I guess you are right, if the races draw than keep them, its just I got use to all of those years of side by side by side on the 1.5 mile ovals.
