I'm surprised that no one has challenged dudes lame remrk about the "...gayest album ever". Anyone who was into them and other funk groups of the 70's, knows that it was all about concept. When you think of "New Birth", it reps music created in it's purest form like a newborn, duh!...nothing gay or wrong about that! It is VERY likely that the photo is an illusion of what you see. I SERIOUSLY DOUBT that they were all butt naked, that would definitely been a convo piece back then. Long live NB!
everybody's yappin about the album cover W A I T !remember that era???people were into group sex and shit like that but if I'm wrong then all those soul brotha blaxploitation films are lyin...S M H
I remember New Birth and their music very well. They were soulful and passionate. Like so many of the black groups of the 70's help idenify black america. We created our own sound and style. We embraced our SOUL and HEART TO CREATE A SOUND THAT ALL THE WORLD EMBRACED....I'M BLACK AND I'M PROUD...SO PROUD AS NEVER BEFORE....
YOU SHOULD HEAR JERRY BELL'S REMAKE OF BEEN A LONG TIME!! HE WAS ONE OF THE SINGERS IN THE GROUP, HE'S A BAD MOTHER F" HE IS ON UTUBE UNDER JERRY BELL. NOW HE IS A VOCAL BEAST!!! HE WILL REALLY TAKE YOU BACK. THERE ARE NO ARTIST OF TODAY DOING ANYTHING LIKE THIS!!
@jamesjames600 Your Pushing the hell out of Jerry Bell I'm not trippin just wondering are you his PR guy? Jerry Bell join the group in their last leg days after the wilson brother left...
You are so right ilovemyboyba, in the 70's these groups were more than just musicians they were family , people tripping off the album cover and saying it's gay or they are an orgy are uncomfortable with themselves and their sexuality. They are victims of American sexual Society's perversion. When you look at 70's black bands like New Birth weren't just friends they were FAMILY. Too bad we as African- Americans have embraced White America's worst cultural excess of hate and confromity
At the time I bought this album I didn't give the cover a second thought. It seemed kind of natural. Rufus featuring Chaka Khan and The Undisputed Truth were a couple of other groups that featured one female. Chaka Khan and Taka Boom are sisters.
I LOVE this album cover!!!! This was way before SEXUALITY had us in a CHOKEHOLD. New Birth was waaay more than a group, judging by this picture they were obviously a family. With two of the most FLAWLESS lead singers in music HISTORY!!!!
@1razinhell there is a girl in the midst of all them men how is this gay? i mean i could see if all the gays where butt bald naked and there wasnt a woman invovled but there is
@1razinhell so a video full of half naked girls all grining up on one rapper is ok though? i mean everbody is putting everything in the gay box these days and it is really obnoxious
yo rrickster the funk will never die youtube is proof i try to listen to some fm today i end up here or playing my favorites on rhapsody so you see the funk is very much alive on well if the youngsters cling to rap its their loss funk is like the box of chocolates almost every piece is good though you don't know exactly what you get until it plays
Man!! I forgot how powerful that BASS LINE was in this song. The artist of this era really tried hard to produce good quality music for their fans. You can feel the emotions in the music and vocals. You just don't see that today except for a few artist like Angie Stone who does her best to bring good music and vocals, but is so underated. Man I miss the 70's
they say the issue of whats good music and bad music , is subjective but i don't believe that...this is the only form of music that steals your heart...musicianship is great but soul is a life-force...feel is everything man...great f*%king song...HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY YAWW..
Hmm, I'm not sure about that one. This sounds exactly like Leslie. Melvin and Leslie's voices are totally different. You can hear Melving singing a verse on "Dream Merchant", "You should have told this fool to stop it. You should have made this blind man see" that's Melvin, this is Leslie.
Yes, this was back when you could hang with your love in the parks until the sun came up.. . We used to hang in different neighborhoods playing music. We Never got bothered by the police.. We used to go to house parties almost every night. No fights. No police. This was in York, Pa. The park was Lafayette Park. We used to love this Album. I'm 46 now. I still love to hang out in the and listen to music. It is hard now. Cause, the police will think you are dealing drugs. It's sad.
Goin' Downstairs Right Now, And Searchin' Through My Dad's Stack Of Albums For This Bad Tune. I've Seen This Album Laying Around For Many Years, But Never Paid It Any Mind. I Will Know!
And on top of all that this has got to be the most underated slow jam of he 70s. If you're headfirst in love this is definitely the cut. Thanks D for posting this track.
One of my favorite bands. Growing up in Louisville, Ky. I lived accross the street from the bass player's (Leroy Taylor) daughter India and the brother (Sean) of Reggie and Vincent Calloway of Midnight Star. It was such a great time musically. I love the Love Potion album. They did a cover of Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds' "Fallin' In Love Again" and also did nice job on "We're All God's Children"
You want to see a live version of the New Birth look up the post New Birth you don't have to be alone posted by Triump 1980...it's the shit...ask any questions the R&B Beast....

With Hip Hop leading the music world which is a sad thing R&B artist are starving because the younger folks like this more fake form of music to rebel to,the modern funk scene in the States is pretty much dead, talented artist are fleeing to smooth jazz ...R&B and Funk is in a sad state right now Hopefully R&B & Funk will make strong come back if British are leading the way more power to them...I'm into Smooth Jazz now...Ask any Questions the R&B Beast...
I was born in 69. Although I was a child in the 70's, I grew up on this music. Nothing can compare!! I just wish I was old enough to experience the pretty women, and social consciousness of the 70's. I was born 15 years too late.
