Actually, it's quite the opposite, he's not trying to lose the British accent the directors would have asked him to emphasise it because, as allot of the comments have shown, the Americans love a British accent.

I am sorry to disappoint, but after living in the the UK all my life I have NEVER met anyone who speaks with such a strong accent, this actor is no exception. - Watch him in "The Sarah Jane Adventures" and you will hear his true accent, and it is different to this.
