Over the years, I have heard and seen (on TV) so very many speeches given in this House chamber. I dare say that this is the finest and most American speech I have ever heard given in this chamber. Goodness sakes -- he even talks about the paintings in the room, and I bet half of the Congress didn't even bother to notice them until he said something about them.

The French never cared about America. Whether it was there issue with us during the time of the colonies, or whether it's the support of the South when it tried to destroy the Untied States, they never supported us. During the cold war, they weren't much of an ally. They see us as a bankrupt culture, and have seen our culture in that way for centuries. We have very little in common. Sarkozy is a good man, and I like him. But, he is not representative of most of the French.

@Kopite4life12 No we aren't a perfect democracy. But to be fair for a country in the 18th century surrounded by absolute monarchies, to have the kind of political institutions we had isn't bad. We where once a republic for 11 years under Cromwell who turned the new institution of democracy into a military dictatorship. So the politicians decided to restore a limited monarchy, so the fact that the monarch had some powers is just a result, of restoring the monarchy.

But in more modern times America Britain and France were the closest of close allies. Today they work together in the Security council to stop radical ideals of Russia and China, yes they have differences but are always there to help in a big conflict. @Aleksandr2002 That was a matter of putting a check on Britain. It had nothing to do with them valuing our people in any real sense. We had utility value for a period of time, but that was it. But even then, in their culture, they largely despised Americans. And they still do despise Americans. I'd advise you to read up on the history of their anti-American outlook. It's not new and it has nothing to do with American foreign policy.

Without French help in 1778, the United States would never exist. Without American help in 1944, France never would have been under Nazi control forever. The French are our friends and this was evident when they gave the Statue of Liberty as a gift during our centennial in 1876.

In the terms of 'inner' culture, there are countries in the world that are more like the States and more extroverted (large generalization) and countries/cultures that are more introverted like France (another large generalization), yet the US and France tend to gravitate to each other. It's interesting to read about.
