No such luck for me. When I was in third grade I had young boy crush on my teacher. But from them on right through grade school to college, all the teachers were just too old for me to take notice. Still, it's a good song.
The rumors are true. I used to ride around in my beat-up car that had a GREAT Ranger 8-track player and I'd listen to this song while driving around through the back roads of Michigan thinking about my sexy and mature high school psychology teacher, Mrs. Bukkema (sp?), and how this song related so much to us (even though the bitch only took it as far as me being her case study for the other kids when I didn't show up for class, which was rare).
haven't heard this song since my turntable crashed about 15 years ago. listening to this song reminded me of a teacher i hadn't thought of in 30 years. oh coming of age in the eighties'
GOD would even listen to this and give a big a really big thumbs up to this classic and then he would say i need mor philadelphia freedom, candy by the pound, club at the end of the street, bennie and the jets etc.
Empty Sky, EJ, Tumbleweed, Madman, Honky, Piano, Yellow Brick Road.....all within 4 years.,....aside from the Beatles, no one, IMO, put out such consistent records over a similar time period. No one may ever will again.
No comment here I agree i was never a big Beatles fan and the songs of theirs I like best are ones other people covered. for example Eltons cover of Lucy in the sky with diamonds.
This is THE Elton john song .It's perfect chorus ,hook bridge . A doctorate in song writing and what man doesn't have that wet dream teacher in their past?
As a lover of both The Beatles and Elton, I can say I love Elton more. However, The Beatles were the progenitors of all types of pop music and rock. Yet, Elton would have been a force regrdless; it should be self evident. I think the collaboration between elton and bernie bore the fruits of lennon and mccartney. Elton's music is ultimately more refined and , at times, touches our hearts.

I saw Elton play during his 1980 tour. The venue was big for those days, I'd say 30,000 people. It didn't seem that big though. When Elton put his show on, he had you in the palm of his hand. One song would have the glitz and glimmer. The lighting and all was fun. The next song would be a beautiful ballad, with Elton & his grand piano, w/ everyone singing along as they held lighters up. He'd then rock the place with a good R & R tune. He gave us all he had and a bit more.
This is the very first Elton John album I ever bought.....hell it was my very first album period. And I t still have that album ....some 38 years later. I still dust it off and put it on the turntable ......Yes I still have one. LOL
I might be wrong but I think this maybe one of the most under rated albums of all time. And this song is in particular along with Elderberry Wine should have been
@JFinSD2 One of the reviews a read about a year ago agrees with you: "Several great songs on this album. Wide variety, all flawless." One of my favorites about taking the bus: "gonna go west."
had this teacher-Ms. Gagniuk-MICHIGAN--anyway she had these huge ones, and, being young, AND, innocent-was oblivious to that. Made sexual jokes, WAS, not aware of the subconcious remarks/jokes-was a hit and didn't even know it. in retrospect, quite the MILF- fond memories-GO F.H.S.
I love this song! It really has a vibe that is like few other songs I have in memory. It never got its popularity in the US probably because it was eclipsed by Daniel. But really, it is so cool and maybe the fact it never got its due makes it a song that you can listen to now without feeling like it was overplayed )as most popular songs have that issue at some point) So it retains a freshness because of that fact. But really a great song both lyrically and mucically when studied.
Having such a good time listening to this again after so many years, I'm going to buy the CD this weekend(the vinyl's buried under the stairs).
Did anybody experience the same as me when Captain Fantastic came out? Was waiting for it with baited breath and when it came boy was I disappointed. One good track, Meal Ticket. Or so I thought..... played it again in the 90s and thought...... oh how wrong can you be? Bloomin masterpiece. You live and learn huh.
We all had a crush on some teacher, usually in high school. Mine was just as awkard as most experience, however mine was a male., oh, well I'm sure Sir Elton probably meant the same instead of 'she was long and lean"! Happy Summer Vactions to all.
@Letsgojettin I had a terrible crush on a Jr High teacher- I would see him in the hallway and trip over myself. Could not speak to him- so funny now looking back 35 years and ten years married to my wonderful husband. But I still remember him.
I think of my drama teacher whenever I hear this song. She was absolutely amazing. Whether it be her eyes, her smile, her personality. Too bad she's engaged, though. I would have liked to get to know her better. Is it love? Maybe...

Oh come on,admit it people..wasn't there a teacher you had the hots for when you were growing up? It's only human nature to be an everyday teenage boy or girl who's turned on by at least one of your instructors (one teacher at our junior high--Miss Davis--was said to have actually looked at some of the male students with more than a passing interest, but that may have been wishful thinking on the part of those who started that rumor. She later became the principal). A very real and truthful tune.
I recall seeing Elton in concert for the first time back in the early 70s... amazing showman. Seeing him these days, sitting stoically at the piano, is not quite the same thing.
At the 2:07 mark: "So ah'm SIT-in IN the CLASSroom (Elton adds a "Whoo")"...sounds like he was getting into it right there. And the line: "I've got John Wayne stances, I've got Errol Flynn advances - and it doesn't mean a doggone thing" ought to be bronzed in the rock and roll hall of fame.
@ATamandua GREAT OBSERVATION! went back and listened to that line,"I`ve got John Wayne stances..." You Are Right!! You Could Almost Equate Bernie Taupin To Poe by readind and hearing that line!!

Taupin & John were a great team, but Lennon & McCartney's styles, whether collectively or separately influenced several major artists and had an unmistakable influence on music for generations, no way Taupin & John come close to having a similar legacy...
@Libertarian369 I must agree with you although I'm a huge Beatles fan. On the other hand, I do not think that the Taupin songs/lyrics can step on the same platform with the Beatles's songs, because they are too homogeneous, I mean, they're like McDonald's food, same all over and every time. I do not say that these are cheap melodies, but definitely not as special piece by piece. But at least, this is MUSIC
@Libertarian369 What hate?? Your saying The Beatles talent created such an enormous mountian of success & excellence , that they set the standard. Since The Beatles were not perfect(they came the closest), and Elton/Bernie weren't even nearly perfect, how does that make them better??? Also, For all the great success Elon had then, McCartney has more top 20 hits during the 70's than Elton. So he wasn't even better than McCartney as a solo artist. Just a different opinion.
You're spot on, Elton and Bernie had the sort of songwriting magic that doesn't often come along. And I can tell you that back in the 70's I went to a number of Elton John concerts and he never failed to exceed expectations. They were perfect: Incredible sets / costumes that showcased Eltons' showmanship, but even they were eclipsed with the incredible magic of Elton as an artist.
@Libertarian369 You could make an argument that they are equal in caliber as song writers but their songs musically just never approached the prolificness of Lennon and McCartney... evident by who has the more popular songs that have sustained their popularity over a half century. Elton John is not on the same level. But frankly, no one else is with exception of perhaps Frank Sinatra (in all of 20th century music) I would say your comment is easily a stretch. (And that is being kind.)
@Libertarian369 No hate comments but given that Lennon and McCartney could each write both music and lyrics, that gives them an edge. But no one loves Elton and Bernie's early work more than I do.
this is a truely great song........I found this cd in all my Elton cd's and have been listening to it for a few days now........I haven't heard these songs in quiet some time......GOD Elton John is the GREATEST of all time!!! and by the way....this album came out the year I was born!!
Nalencer, this should have been an A side, he would have had his first number one in the charts and no mistake, its just such a happy tune, I never get sick of hearing it, EVER!!!
One of the best albums ever made...bringing back a lot of great memories listening to these songs and wishing I had them on CD and not my old LP...time to go shopping!
I hate that the radio stations only play "Daniel" or "Crocodile Rock" off this album when "Teacher I Need You" is clearly the best song on the album!!
So funny people mentioning Mary Kay Latorneau.....I've always loved this album and song, and I went to grade school with Mary Kay , back when her last name was Schmidt, and her father was a conservative politician with a second family on the side.....what a long strange trip. She was quite a little number back in eighth grade..
this song reminds me of my form teacher in high school in 72. her name was miss fox and what a fox she was. good memories flooding back hearing this classic song from a classic album. CHEERS!
I remember reading an interview where he said he'd like to 'pack' it all in when he was about 35!! didn't want to be still doing it when he was old.....obv that was an awfull long time ago probably about 72..he's still the dogs bollocks...
biollante62, You're an idiot. Elton was, is, and always will be fantastic. His record proves it beyond a shadow of a doubt. Who cares if you have respect for the man or not? Nobody. Keep your moronic comments to yourself.
This was never released as a single but should have been, i am convinced it would have been his 1st number one. Still as fresh today as it was then. Absolute classic my friend, as is Crazy water.
This man was fantastic back in the day, today he is a disney joke,no respect for what is left of the man. Reggie get back to rock and roll!!! us old farts miss it.I'm waiting for a duet with hannah or miley disney shit next.
go out and buy "captain and the kid" and tell me this man still aint rockin! plz...disney joke? try a living legend! cant wait for his next album! rock on elton!
Ah, 1973... I was young, skinny, had hair and a sliver of sex appeal. 2009... nothing's left but the song. Like Bernie Taupin wrote "It seems to me a crime that we should age...'
@oatybuck exactley, im listening to this song with cordless headphones, singing my heart out,my neighbors,I like my neighbors, maybe they hear me sing, who knows ?
Had a teacher back then and every day this song would go through my mind...I wasnt as lucky as that dude was with the blonde....And yes Dad would have patted me on the back....;)
bourbon in the boot...slow too a drive in no movie showing ,just a catch up space all hangin out to this tune...great 73...they say life comes but once if so this was it...
I had a high school creative writing teacher I wanted Unfortunately we never got together circa 1980 Torrey Pines High I think her name was Kaye. Love Sean
Ironic, I had this teacher in Jr high that was just smoking hot..Miss Gongloff. I dedicate this song to her all the time I head it...I went to Catholic School need I say more!!
this IS my all-time favorite EJ song! I remember the first time I ever heard it...on "Famous 56" WFIL in Philadelphia...thought for sure it would be a big top 40 hit, but wasn't to be.
1 person is the class clown....

She was quite a little number back in eighth grade..

biollante62, You're an idiot. Elton was, is, and always will be fantastic. His record proves it beyond a shadow of a doubt. Who cares if you have respect for the man or not? Nobody. Keep your moronic comments to yourself.
rdaystrom 2 years ago
This was never released as a single but should have been, i am convinced it would have been his 1st number one. Still as fresh today as it was then. Absolute classic my friend, as is Crazy water.

Ah, 1973... I was young, skinny, had hair and a sliver of sex appeal. 2009... nothing's left but the song. Like Bernie Taupin wrote "It seems to me a crime that we should age...'

Such a great song, such a great album.
What planet did this dude come from? lol.
"Blues for Baby and Me" is classic Americana poetry, and inspiration for "Jack And Diane", "Livin' On A Prayer" and many more.

There might be more who say
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road or Tumbleweed is his (and Bernie's) best
album, but I truly feel it's this one. Madman and Honky Chateau are very
good too. It's just clever rock n roll, well
written, well sung and well played. Oh
and then came the 80's, unfortunately.
