This password sets the Tourian location bit, plus the "reset" bit, which is an extra location bit the programmers included "just in case", I guess. If tried on an emulator, this just locks up instead. Looking at it in the debugger reveals that the program counter is pointing at a data byte - in other words, the program is trying to execute data as code.

Well, the least she ever wears is the bikini, but yes, that's why a rumour was spread for ages that if you beat the game in under 30 minutes you'd get to see (very pixelated) nakedness. But it's easily disproved, people have beaten the game in as quick as 17 minutes, and on here if you search for "metroid spiceninja" there's a video of a guy playing through it in 22 minutes. In fact, with tool assisted speedruns (google for "tasvideos") and the abuse of glitches it's been done in 8 minutes! :)

Yes. You get a beam that makes a distinct sound (a red colored ice beam) and it's basically another plain long beam. Of course you know metroids can be killed once frozen with 5 missiles. If you go up to Brinstar, you can't roll into a ball to get back. If you go through the first door in Tourian, a ring laser will pop you in the door and you'll be dead!

The Metroid password system actually allows for a lot of things to be valid passwords, including (by random chance) "JUSTIN BAILEY" - it works out as valid according to the game's password programming. One thing that *is* an intentional cheat password, however, is NARPASSWORD0000000000000, which while not being "valid" according to the programming, was left in as a "debug" mode that grants you unlimited life, missiles, upgrades, etc.

I've just looked at one of the "related videos" showing strange but valid Metroid passwords - it showed "ThisIs WhoIAm Jesus0 00001B" and "aNGRY0 vIDEO0 gAME00 nERd0r" - now, the Angry Video Game Nerd (as a character) wasn't even in existence until 20 years after Metroid, so this alone shows that these coincidental valid passwords aren't a joke reference or word play by the programmers but just random chance. Although, poor AVGN, his code seems to suck :)

This glitch only works on the old NES version and the NES Classics version on the GBA. On all other versions this code had been fixed and will only take you back to the title screen.
