why am i so bloody relieved that he left the gas station owner unharmed? well, anthony hopkins won the oscar for those 16 scary minutes of silence of the lambs... bardem won for any one of these scenes that become bloody brilliant as soon as he walks on in. be it the first half of this part or that guy he had pulled over the side of the road. i'll have nightmares today, for sure.

Old sheriffs never saw hired killers with such disregard for life. 'Out matched', Ed Tom relinquishes at the end of the film. , hope that helps.

Maybe the best actor in this great film is the gasStation owner- he listens to Jav's lines, responds as anyone would as if it's the 1st time he's heard it and seen him -he shows genuine confusion mixed with a bit of dread. That's acting at it's best.

The gas station by far is the most nonsensical thing I've ever watched. It all started because he saw he was from Dallas and was asking about the weather out there. I mean... really? That's what makes you go "intellectual" and "ironic" and flipping a coin on whether or not you'll kill him?

I've been waiting to see this scene and am left with utter disappointment.

Anton wasn't addicted to murdering, and I doubt he was capable of mercy.

Anton's philosophy was the coin toss. Anton "got here the same way the coin did". His victim's fates are met by a mix of chance, fate, destiny, luck, randomness. By personal choice (choosing which side the coin will land on.) He is no more bloodthirsty than the random events that happen in the world, and no more merciful.

To dismiss him as a psychopath is ridiculous.

If the clerk can ID him to the police(direction heading, license plate, looks etc) then that's an inconvenience to Anton who now has to not find a new vehicle. Now, do you see why Anton got into his business when the clerk started "noticing" him?

It makes no sense when its painfully obvious the clerk meant nothing by it and he could have just left him alone. But instead, he made himself very memorable and much easier to identify and the clerk would have extra incentive to mention it to an officer should one come by. So no, I don't get it.

1) The clerk asks Anton about weather in Dallas cuz he saw his car from there. Why did he look at the car? Because he's bored at the store and is obviously just making polite conversation.

2) Instead of paying and leaving, Anton gets up in his face, scaring the crap out of the clerk, flips a coin and leaves. The clerk will likely tell the cops about this encounter if asked.

...I DON'T GET IT.

That's two completely different and conflicting psyches that can't just be smashed together to create a character. Especially one that shows little to no emotion. Its like he doesn't even care about the money. And no, he isn't death reincarnate. He's trying to be deep when he clearly isn't. It was a poorly written character.

In the novel they just say his ethnicity is hard to place, because he seems to have a little bit of everything in him. This is one of the reasons they picked Javier Bardem to portray him in the movie.

I always thought Chigurh is of Cajun origin, maybe part Indian, part whatever.

It's interesting to know that he has a name after all, and is not some un-named mystery hitman.

Chigurh is no serial killer. Far from it.

Serial killers usually kill a particular kind of people, be it hookers, homosexuals, some ethnic group or old people. They kill to satisfy a need, which they sometimes feel cursed by, but cannot resist. Serial killers bury their victims, and try not to leave a trace of what they did.

Chigurh is a psychotic hitman with some really strange principles, which sets him aside from other psychos who don't bother with that.

Reason? Who knows.
