Wow - that's a heavy train going up a steep grade (or should I say "gradient?"). And I hear it is very difficult to find any Alcos in the US (where I used to live), especially three Alcos fighting at full throttle like this. Thanks for sharing!
what the percent grade of this line? wow 15 to 25 cars and one wow 2.7% grade wow thats steep they should have had 2 WDM3 or more up front but why use one and have wdm3a's pushing at least the train didn't seprate and have a run away down the grade
This is a classic Diesel-Action video capturing a full clip from front to back of a Western Ghat journey. Congratulations and thanks for sharing this with all Rail fans around the world. My next wish list would be, Goods train action from Kulem to Castle Rock. That would an awesome sight with five or six WDP4's!!!!
@JuanManuelGrijalvo , they bankers do sand if there is a wheel slip. In the WDG-3A class locos there is no automatic sanding. A buzzer sounds if there is a wheel slip and the assistant loco pilot or the loco pilot can then release the sand by pressing the sander button.
By any chance, does any one know, when does a train get banker duplets / triplets? On a lot of sections, may it be Karjat Lonavla section (DC WCG series) on Mumbai-Pune route, Kasara Igatpuri section (AC WAM series) on Mumbai Nasik route, Brigenza ghat Section (WDM series) on Miraj Londa route, etc. What is the basis of decision as to how many bankers to provide 1,2,3? although 1 is rare, I have seen it. Does it simply depend on size of train? I have seen 20 bogie trains get 2 or 3 on...
Oh is that the sand from the sand boxes? I did not know that. I thought that it was just the dust due to the release of pressurized air that lead to the eruption of dust on tracks. Do you know the purpose of these sand boxes by any means? Are these sand boxes specific to the bankers? Please let me know.
In this case, the bars serve to stop the monkeys from coming in. But if you have seen enough vidoes of Indian trains/buses, you will have realized that they actually stop passengers from moving in AND out through the windows!
What's that, 25 coaches?? How steep is that gradient?

@12moshpit It is Western Ghats, a part of deccan plateau. More precisely the Western Ghat section bordering the states of Goa & Karnataka.

Brilliant capture :) btw the bankers are DG3As..DM3As are not used as bankers here :)
dheerajrao 1 year ago
@dheerajrao I think a single WDP4B is capable of hauling 24 coaches on such a gradient.
rainbow30000 11 months ago
@rainbow30000 I don't think so. It MAY do it but there will be a lot of strain on the rake. Use of bankers reduces strain on the rake.
dheerajrao 11 months ago
Thats a gr8 capture.
But need to know couple of things??
Do this train gets banking on both directions with the same combination(1 in front and 2 at back)??
Where is this Briganza ghat section i.e exactly how far from Vasco/Madgaon??

Awesome video, towards the end (2:40) you can see the sand from the Loco sanders on the track as they climb the gradient.

@bhushan80
The sand is used to provide extra traction when the gradient
is too steep for just adhesion to work. All
locomotives have sand boxes.

Some passengers do feed them but then the little brats can be persistent AND aggressive!

Are the bars in the windows meant to keep them out of trains?

I had the pleasure of traveling this section at the door of the 2nd class on the Goa Express and it remians one of my most memorable rail journeys.
THANX!
