  • Definitely was a foul on Pippen, but I don't think I've ever seen a goaltending call like that. I think that was the wrong call. The ball was still in his hand.

  • jordans was the most amazing basketbal player I've ever seen. Even today he still is the best player in the world!

  • Blocking one of the tallest and greatest centers in NBA history...

    Like a BOSS!

  • the foul wasnt on MJ

  • no foul

  • "great play by Ewing" what?? Great play by Jordan.

  • Looked like a layup attempt at :27

  • @josiptauber yeap, i saw that too. this is the reason why they make a call ;))

  • the ball never left his hand. how the fuck is this goaltending. oooh yeah i forgot, it looked to good to be true. cuz it was that good.

  • That was actually good call on Jordan, there. Seriously, but it was a close one indeed.

  • Jordan deserved to be angry, that was not a foul. He even didn't touch Ewing's hand.

  • it was a foul before hand on pippen so the goaltending call is irrelevant. fuck off jordan dickriders

  • @imhowardmoonsir how is it irrelevant? Ewing now gets a chance at a 3-point player instead of just 2 free throws.

  • @Gammack fuck off jordan dickriders also applies to replying to this comment

  • If anybody shouted at a ref today like Jordan did, they'd get ejected, a $28976328962 fine and a suspension.

  • @Bernankeful yes man, today's game is a pussy game (compared to what used to be)

  • there wasnt even a foul there, two bad calls in one instant...

  • very bad call... that was a clean block !

  • "Everyone here wishes they could get up and do that just once in their life"

Amen. Took the words right from my mouth.

  • iffy call

  • The ref just felt sorry for Patrick so he tried giving Michael a bad break

  • Legit foul call against Pippen, but horrible goaltending call.

  • DAT WAZ A CLEAN BLOCK

  • @sammyxoxoxoxo The foul was on Pippen

  • The people in the Garden clapping should be ashamed of themselves...and I'm from New York! Great block, no foul, all around awesome basketball, no need for little referee interference

  • It's crazy how Ewing tried to take off that far from the basket for a dunk / layup. It's weird how the ref calls MJ's block a goaltend.

  • I agree if the foul is on Scottie, but Michael...

You can say blocking foul on Pip, but not for MJ, any....goaltend, impossible...

Patrick's layup (finger-roll layup in replay), but still going up, and blocked immediately by MJ....

bad call for any call any violation on MJ...as nothing happened affecting fairness of Patrick's layup....

  • Bad call. It's that simple.

  • Bull fucking shit.

  • -- 0:40 now thats teamwork--jordan gets the block and in the meantime,,pippen gets ewing from behind..

  • MJ "Da fuck outta here bitch! And I'll own u many times to come too!" lol

  • thats bull

  • thats a disgusting call by the referee.. i hope he got fired and lived a shitty life

  • Ewing was attempting to dunk, realized he won't make it and then try to layup; ball is going upwards... no goaltending, clean block!

  • The refs couldn't comprehend what they saw, so they just made a call lol fucking geezers

  • 3 refs watched this

  • An awesome block ruined by a terrible call from the referee...

  • ewing like the knicks were MJ's bitch.

  • this reminds me of the derrick rose block

  • fukin dumbass

  • real question is what the hell was ewing doing taking off from the free throw line? lol

  • double bad call, there was no foul, there wasn't a goaltend...

  • what i want to know is where the fuck is the foul

  • blind ass ref. not a goaltend and if you watch carefully, ewing traveled lebron style.

  • Yes, that was the right call of goaltending, what was not the right call was the foul on Pip... that idiot Marv Albert said Scottie reached while his hands never went up and he was actually trying to take a charge and never really made contact. Either way, as someone else said, the game was played in the Garden, so the Knicks got the benefit of the calls just as the Bulls got the benefit of the calls in Chicago Stadium and the United Center.

  • i dont think its fair that Jordan's hand was right infront of the rim?

  • Noone here knows the rules of goaltending? That clearly is goaltending since it leaves Ewing's hand and is on the way down.

  • It's the correct call; the ball leaves Ewing's hand and is on the way down.

  • That referee is UHH DUSTTT ! (:

  • what did you expect, the game was played at the garden. of course that ref was gonna call it for Ewing.

  • get that shit outta here

  • if that was lebron james throwing the ball to another team he wouldnt play defense and give up but this is jordan he ran down and block it

  • @MrMuaythai84 just goes to show you what greatness jordan had compared to lebron and his lack of will

  • Guys lets all face the fact that, yea, it was a bad call it was obviously a block, but remember that Jordan spiked Ewing's ego right off the court later with another huge block. See: watch?v=0OIoI8lGEIs&feature=related

  • what is ewing doing taking off from that far anyways

  • Ewing WAS going to dunk, but then thought otherwise. . . you can see it in the replay, he decided to just lay it up. . . but still the call IS bogus, the ball HASN'T left Ewing's hand yet, just about to be released. . . but let's give the refs a break, it's hard to think at the midst of an intense game. . . .

  • two bs calls because pip didnt foul ewing either

  • Ewing did a good job, he saw Jordan coming and tryed to release the ball before he can block it

even thought he couldnt release it early enough, but he got the goaltend call

  • stupid ass ref

  • That's ABSOLUTELY a goaltending call. Ewing turns his wrist and the ball is on the way down. It's like Jordan can do no wrong. Everybody on this page needs to get their heads out of his ass.

  • @tepchef I think you need to check your eyes. No sooner had it slightly left Ewing's hand that MJ had gotten to it. It was NOT on its way down, and it was just beginning to rise to the rim.

Had MJ been any later on that, yes, it would have been a goaltend, but anyone with eyes can see that Ewing held it a bit to long and decided to flip it in at the last second. But no sooner had he done this, MJ was right there as soon as it started to leave Ewing's hand.

  • @mjordanisnumber1 What a shocker; someone with the name mrjordanisnumber1 thinks a call should have gone Jordan's way. Fortunately, I and the referees know the goaltending rule. Look it up on google and get familiar with it. For convenience, I've already posted it in my reply to jdlund.

  • @tepchef Watch the slow motion and listen to the commentator. It was a block. Bad call by the ref. You're saying it's like the refs can do no wrong. Well, YOU need to get ur head out of the ref's ass then

  • @alvinadiwira Listen to the commentator? Please. I think I'll review the rule instead; see above.

  • @tepchef Oh, and John Andrase specifically states it's a goaltending call at 19 seconds. Pay closer attention in your replies, it's just better for your argument.

  • @tepchef, it was indeed absolutely a goaltending call. A really bad, moronic and blatantly incorrect goaltending call, but a call nonetheless. I get that there are people who just automatically worship Jordan and side with him no matter what. But you are just as bad, just in the opposite direction. At 0:40 to 0:41 the ball is very clearly still in Ewing's hand when Jordan swats the ball away, ergo a valid goaltending would be literally impossible.

  • @jdlund Time to give Jordan fans a tutorial on NBA rules, since lord only knows, a seperate set of rules applied to Michael Jordan. NBA Rule No. 11, section 1a, part G specifically states, player shall not "Touch any live ball from within the playing area that is on its downward flight with an opportunity to touch the basket ring. This is considered to be a "field goal attempt" or trying for a goal". I rest my case.

  • For all those who have commented on what a bad call this was, please consult a rule book.. As soon as a whistle is blown (the foul on Pippen) the ball becomes dead. No interference from another player can occur, otherwise it is automatic goal tending, regardless of the flight if the ball. Was the rejection spectacular? No doubt. Was it goal tending? 100%

  • @zanderbgood That's not the rule. You can always block any continuation attempt. If the ball became dead at the whistle, then there would be no continuation because, as you say, the ball is dead.

  • @mrmacross That isnt the rule at all. I'm not positive about the NBA differences, but read FIBA rule 31.2.5 "When an official blows the whistle while the ball is in the hands of a player in the act of shooting, or the ball is in flight on a shot for a field goal, no player shall touch the ball after it has touched the ring while it still has the possibility of entering the basket."

  • @zanderbgood Re-read the rule you're citing. "No player shall touch the ball AFTER IT HAS TOUCHED THE RING whilte it still has the possibility of entering the basket." Hence, if the ball is still on the way up after being released by the shooter, you can block it.

Furthermore, the above is a FIBA-specific rule. In NBA and NCAA, no player can ever touch a ball that's directly above the rim. You may in FIBA, unless the whistle were already blown, then defenders have to let it bounce in or out.

  • that was the most stupid call ever..

  • it's clearly not a goaltend in my opinion

  • we will never know. it looks like ball had still contact with ewing's palm, but the palm was underneath the ball that means that the ball was on its way lefting the ewings palm. i think its a matter of milliseconds we will never know for sure.

  • The balls on the way down, how is it not goaltending? Do you people even know what goaltending is?

  • @JasonBrodie cuz ewing was going for a dunk

  • @tekniqs No he wasn't. You can clearly see at 0:28 he turns his hand underneath the ball and lets it roll off his hand so it can fall into the basket, that's when Jordan blocks it.

  • They robbed MJ of one of the sickest blocks, no way was that a goaltend.

  • on the replay 0:28 you can see the ball clearly going downward not upward making it a goaltend. tough call but an accurate call.

  • It was a clean block but the foul was on Pippen. Jordan interfered with the play, making it a goal tend

  • it was lucky he blocked him... he wasnt doing to make the ring!

  • look at it again.. it was a finger roll, not a dunk, his hand was nowhere near the basket.. and 1

  • I'm a hardcore Knicks fan and I admit that was a clean block. Bad call. Brings back bad - very bad - memories of how the Bulls absolutely owned the Knicks in the '90's. Jordan sent me to bed crying many a night.

  • Fuck Jess Kersey.

  • hopefully that guy isnt reffing anymore i didnt know you can goaltend dunks

  • even though it was called a goaltend, you gotta give michael the credit for putting a lot of effort in blocking that shot!

  • thats a legit block. the ball had just left Ewing's hands when michael caught it..bad call by the referee.

  • @excess34 it doesn't matter whether it just left Ewing's hands or a month ago. As long as it is landing and not elavating it is goaltending. Read the rules will you? :)

  • @immoren: cmon man.Based on the camera view, ewing looks like he's gonna dunk it but change his mind in the last minute and decided to just lay it up on the way down. thats why the call shouldn't be a goaltend. Its goaltending If he released the ball in the peak of his jump, but he released the ball on his way down. Look closely on 0:27- 0:28 and you'll understand what im saying. better buy some new contacts, will you?hehe

  • @excess34 If it had left Ewings hand during a dunk it would be on the way down which means even more that it was a goaltend.

  • @Holdington. wrong my friend.LOL.you can block a dunk as long as the ball is still in the hands of the player attempting the dunk. Also i never said that ewing dunked the ball. to quote myself, what I exactly said is that ", ewing looks like he's gonna dunk it but change his mind in the last minute and decided to just lay it up on the way down".Ewing LAID IT UP!He never DUNKED the ball, he LAID IT UP.thats why the call is wrong. It shouldn't be a Goaltending. :)

  • i love this block... 1st time I saw it, amazing...

  • @lloydmontifalcon No its a goaltend. The ball is going down when Jordan blocks it. If the ball is going up when he blocks it then its a block

  • @2rad008 i agree.

  • a clean block

  • If it was judged regular , this block coud have been more famous or as famous as the other one on Ewing.

Thank you anyway , I was looking it for a long time.

ONE OF THE GREATEST BLOCK EVER !

Remember how Ewing was a strong warrior back then ?

It would be like blocking Shaq or running Lebron nowadays ? Who dares to ?

  • That ref should be executed!!

  • wow...Jordan can fly!!!!

  • The ball never left Ewing's hand. How is that a goaltend? How do you goaltend a dunk?

  • @Intramorph The ball was on it's way down even if Pat had not released it once the ball is on it's way down you can't block it. Patrick had already started to decend, the ball is part of the hand at that point so gravity got the call

  • @vincespell if you don't know what you're talking about then you shouldn't talk at all. you cannot goaltend a ball that is still in the hand of the shooter. it must be released and on its way down. if what you are saying is true then just about every block on a dunk attempt is goaltending which it is not. don't bother trying to refute this because you are wrong

  • @Intramorph The ball is on the way down, that's were the goaltend occurs. Also, I think the ref might have thought it was in the cylinder.

  • Bullshit call, that was clean.

  • so nice! - AIR JORDAN

  • that was a regular block from Jordan

  • Damn! lol
