Okay I like the idea of the non limited movement I tried it and it worked perfectly But I had a foamish blow up bottome like you did with the dhingy by using a tube
Cool dad to help your kid do this and let him take the lead. Awesome son to be willing to drop the video games and do really neat stuff like this! Great job guys!
So cool. In shop class, in 70's, McFarland Wi, some "big kid" made hovercraft, and shop teacher told US 'bout it (remember, schools actually had SHOP, but NOT condoms?) So,sent off to tiny ad in Boys life, maybe; also remember inflation & hard to get 'nuff money for kids dreams? Well, 50 coats butyrate dope, cloth, a FIFTY DOLLAR wood prop w/ mower engine snuffed dream. But at Magnet School here, made daughter one w/ upside down wooden shelves, coated cloth, backpack blower. Yours cooler!
what do you mean by the "foil that chips off" on the first hovercraft? also i think it could work perfectly fine if not better than the second, if you guys put that leaf blower onto the first hovercraft.
also how many horsepower is the gas leaf blower that you guys use?
I forget what the horsepower on the blower is. It was a midrange one that we got from Lowes. We are going to rework the thing this summer to see if we can get it to go.
good work kid, if you get another leaf blower or use the shop vac and leaf blower combined, you could possibly use the dinghy boat and use the hovercraft with a freind...
Great idea! Dad and I are going to do another one this summer. We have gotten such good comments about how to do it with the dinghy, that we probably will try to do that. Your idea to do two leaf blowers so it could carry two people is great!
lawnmower engines could work too... look at my favorite videos you will see a group from taiwan that used lawnmower engines (they have more power and stronger blades). there is also an episode of mythbusters where they make cheap hovercrafts too... you and your dad can find used lawnmowers on craigslist real cheap or at a flea market. after you get it working make sure you test it at a lake. I'm building one this summer. good luck kid...
Mechanic55 is right. Get your leaf blower to blow into the raft (it doesn't matter where) and cut holes along the inside perimeter of the raft. It's essentially the same concept as your second hovercraft but on a larger scale. Also, dont use plywood - find something lighter. You can't afford the extra weight with only one leaf blower. Otherwise, good job!
Thanks dajutster. We will try this and post our results. We really appreciate the advise. We could not figure out why it would not work, but now we have something to try! We think we are going to go ahead and get a second leaf blower, too.
That first attempt was really great and would have worked if you had put some holes in the inside ring or towards the bottom of the raft rather than leaving it inflated. Then the blower would inflate the raft and it would conform more to surface.
If you just want to see it fly, skip to the 6th minute and the 53rd second of the video. Note that there is no direct steering system on it yet, but leaning and tilting the hovercraft and the leaf blower while going forward will make it veer and spin a little.
love it! sweet memories you are making with your kids!
Loriaesw 6 months ago
you shoudent use a pre blowd skirt, the leafblower needs to pump air in to the skirt, then via holes ti the inside.

you should have used 2 blowers or more depending on the weight instead of 1
