Thanks for the great memories! I grew up in Pleasanton CA and walked to school down Rose Ave. I always looked forward to those afternoon when the Zephyr came through westbound on my walk home. I still remember the Zephyr stopping to let someone off, how the conductor got out and set our a step so passengers could disembark.. I also remember the day they razed the Pleasanton station. It was there on the way to school and gone oh the way home.
@danosf I believe it was 1963 or 1964. I was still going to Pleasanton Elementary Elementary. n 1964 our class was transferred to Valley View which was nice because my family had moved to a home off of Vineyard Ave that summer. Before that, it was an interesting walk to school through Kottinger Village and down 2st St. daily to school with a trombone for a 4th grader.
I wish I could see that unit in action during the day! The only time I've seen it in action was just yesterday, but it was nighttime and 918-D was leading the Niles Canyon Railway's "train of Lights".
@danosf I agree with that! I caught this unit leading the 2010 Train of Lights through the crossing at Brightside Yard! That was one of the loudest horns I've ever heard too!
Love that A-200! The Soo Line FP7 2500 at the North Shore Scenic Railroad has an A-200, and a bunch of switchers at the nearby Rices Point Yard still have A-200 horns on them.
I just received a recent O gauge release by Lionel of the WP F7 918 (ABA). Looks and sounds great (just like the real one). I believe the sounds were recorded from the real one at the Niles Canyon Railway.
A-200s were used on Tugboats. A-125s as well. And Steam DVE 200s,300s, and 425s, on Great Lakes Ships and 575s on Ocean Liners. Much marine applications of this great old honker. 125/200 sound nice.
I don't know why, but when I was little, I called that horn the hongle horn. Lol. This just brought back my childhood! Thanks!

@manthony1956 - I grew up there too, but the depot was gone when I grew up there in the 70's. Do you remember what year they tore it down?

That's about the least intimidating train horn I've ever heard in my life! LOL
Baltimora1957 1 year ago
@Baltimora1957 - You need to hear it in person. They are among the loudest.

@danosf Well if it's all the same I'd rather not be that close!!

@Baltimora1957 You wouldn't think that way if that F-unit was bearing down on you at 80 MPH. Those Leslie trumpets are exceedingly loud.
BillyRosinet 1 year ago
@Baltimora1957 you've obviously never been in the cab and heard one...ear protection required....put one on your car and try it!

It should NOT be Amtrak doing the California Zephyr it should be the Western Pacific, Rio Grande, and oh what was the other?

No actualy, 4449's airhorn was used for the coastal fog in the old days.

Was this before or after the Golden Gate Railroad Museum moved here?

That horn sounds just like the horn on the 4449.

Westinghouse, not Leslie. They made the 'honkers'.

Quincy #2 was also running that day. She was hauling a freight.

Always enjoy hearing those Leslie A-200 "honker" horns. So common years ago, now a rarity. The WABCO E2 honkers sounded even deeper.

Is that horn a Leslie A-200 or a Westinghouse E-2? Sounds like the Leslie, and it sounds fantastic!
