  • Gasoline engines cold start better than diesel engines. A Tecumseh or Briggs & Stratton engine would cold start better in below 0 weather.

  • When was the last time it had a Top end set? Resetting the injectors can help a lot. Also should have a block heater if it's regularly starting at those kinds of tempratures. Check the STC valve aswell.

  • I just love the sound of this baby firing up.... WOW !!!!

  • EPIC

  • is there anythin that sounds nicer than a cummins firing up?

  • Cool thats the way i start up after a night out with a litle to much to drink

  • wow cool sounds great

  • @chrismuir111 Yes Chris seems to work well if you remove the rubber hose from the air cleaner to the turbo and feed hot air in.

  • dame u guys dont no nothing!!i have a generator set of cummins 6BT and in winters when its -4 degrees it starts at its first kick.i know that 6bt and many other engines like this one dont have an heater that is bcoz of the engineering done by the germans, that it dont require any heater to heat it up,just plug and play, its al that simple.

  • thats one mean machine you got there nice sound

  • man, that starter is a freakin trooper

  • I must say. That's a beast

  • you should of had a camera out side and\where is this engine ??

  • Comment removed

  • Still lots lof parts aronnd for NT855s, the railways in the UK still use them extensively. The sideways orientated NT855 R1s and R5s are fitted to our Diesel Multiple Unit Train fleets. Try Cummins directly or a company called LH Group services in Burton on Trent, who remantufacture all of our rail engines.

  • Why don't ya use eather? I works well with these engines

  • would you do a new video of this when it starts easy and do a running video when its under load it does have a nice sound when running properly

  • @itscool1968 Well thankfully we are not in a nanny state..

  • @simonspiers no but if somone ever gets hurt or over come by carbon moxcide you will get sued then trust me it will be fixed and we all know some of you 3rd world contrays dont care about safety any way

  • @itscool1968 I know what your saying.

This Gen is in an open out building with well vented roof and doors and has no occupants. Leak is not as bad as it looks in video, and besides crankcase blowby is probably just as toxic.

  • @itscool1968 Third world country? It's England, not Africa.

  • @itscool1968 what the fuck is a contray? do you mean country??

  • So.... each cylinder is the size of a soda bottle?

  • The NTC engine is still being made. Check with your Cummins dealer-you might be surprised at what you find.

  • It is starting at a low throttle since it is so cold, it can't accelerate properly. And by the amount of black smoke being emitted out of the exhaust stack, it also tells me it is being started with full throttle, full fuel to the governor. It is advised to get with Cummins, and have them install a idle setting for cold starts so you don't get the massive smoke emission at start, and the engine has a chance to gently warm up instead of being forced up to 1800rpm immediately.

  • I cringe everytime I hear this poor engine starting under full fuel situation-popcorning for a while then firing off very hard not accelerating-which is EXTREMELY hard on a cold Diesel. If they want that engine to last, they should start it very gently onto just an idle, then when warmed up-off it goes. If it is a stand by generator, it should have a block heater-then it would fire right off.

  • @donnactrc The engine is starting from what I can see at low throttle and ramping up as is starts.

  • @donnactrc I doubt you can get parts still, but thanks for the recommendation.

  • @simonspiers not sure where this video is taken, but i know that you can get parts for theses engines, easier then you would think, alot of the trucks i work on have these 855 big cams in them

  • @simonspiers All parts are still available from Cummins.com. These engines are still used in a lot of the UK's sprinter trains.

  • @donnactrc Factory parts may not be available, but you could install an aftermarket in-line hose-type heater.

  • A 5 second squirt of starting fluid(ether) in the air cleaner will get it fire up quickly. All you need is one or two cylinders to fire and it will start. Yes it will knock & rattle, but all diesels have a bit of "Preignition" upon start up. I have cold started a 12V567A EMD (10,000CID) by a 10 second squirt of starting fluid in the air intake to the roots blower on each bank of cylinders. Don't over spray or you could blow up the engine.

  • @strobx1 I would rather not use Ether. It knocks bad enough on diesel.

  • holy shit that is a long start up sequence, lol

  • great works

  • Volvo put a heater in the Air inlet which works well but most generators start in the first 10 to 15 seconds a block heater is a must and the starter normally kicks out after 15 seconds so im puzzled why it keeps on cranking !!!!

  • I keep it cranking to build up enough heat to start. If you stop the engine will never catch before the battery's die.

When set to remote start the engine will crank for up to 45 seconds depending on what setting the timer is set too.

  • a block heater would do wounders for that engine.

  • @trkr27 Yes that would be the best option. Also thinking of fitting two glow plugs into the inlet manifold to warm the incoming air.

  • If you had bled the system properly, this GenSet would have started inside 3 or 4 seconds without any struggle.

  • The system is bled! The smoke from the turbo shows that.

  • That sounds like a good start for a diesel that size. I've heard some knock so loud that you'll swear a piston is going to come fling out and smash you in the face!

  • is there any way you can throtle it back when starting? and what is the cpl number?

  • The engine is governed to 1500 rpm and can be forced to idle by pushing the linkage connecting to the governor. What is the CPL number?

  • towards the front of the engine on the left side in front of the fuel pump there is a metal ID plate. look on that plate for the CPL # ( control parts list) and that will tell what is in the motor for parts. what the timming is, compression ratio, hp rating. some times these motors will start easier with less fuel going to them on a cold start.

  • Ah yes CPL is 161 NT 855 G2 made in 1978

  • well cool, it is a 14.5 to 1 compression ratio small cam cummins. as long as the piston rings are still in the motor. yeah they are a little hard to start in the cold. not sure if it is because of the injector nozzles or the quicker timming in the small cam motors.

  • @trkr27 thanks for that info, that is a low compression ratio even for a turbo engine?

  • it is a good ratio! that is what i run in my big cam cummins motors! but even cold the first piston up fires in my motor, couldnt imagine starting one full throttle. i will ask a friend why some small cams were hard starters.

  • and it is usually better for them to warm up a little bit before pinning the tac and trying to hammer the ring and bearings out, from the detonation of trying to fire all the unburnt fuel in the cylinders.

  • that sounded grim at 1.20 !! try a blow lamp in the intake manifold as you wind her over. we have to do it alot on diesel engines.

  • as i wrote earlier it sounds angry when first awakened. but daaamn i sound sweet when it starts running well og gets up to speed!

  • thats just diesel clatter. very normal on a cold big diesel. reason it starts a while after the engine is running is because it only clatters when combustion starts as soon as the diesel is injected. and it needs heat to do this.

  • All my nt 855s start first turn this thing needs some love !!

  • Open to suggestions, it's done 550 hours compressions are all in spec and serviced every year.

  • i know what that growl means, my dad's old Mack did that, WHO DARE AWAKEN ME.

  • @KingOfTheClutch I know! It's like awakening some ancient monster or something!

  • dang, it does not like beeing started cold, it sounds angry!! :-D

  • How many times has someone rung the fire brigade when you've started that thing ?

  • Get the ether out!

  • Whats a lot of smoke!

    Thanks for sharing.

  • Think the detonation from ether would be worse than working the starter. I am planning on fitting a cold start aid in the summer.

  • it smoke as hell

  • Oh boy if that was my back up generator Id be crapping in my pants.....

  • Wow, that sure has one hell of an exhaust leak xD

  • That engine looks like an NT855 which would make it about 14 litres, the next six cylinder engine above that would be a KT, which is about 18 litres.

  • Yes , your correct it is in fact am NT855 making it 14 litre. Thanks for that.

  • Awesome generator!!

  • Smokey & The Bandit

  • 37 seconds cranking. You definitely need good batteries and good connections.

    Is it 24 Volts ?

Love the clag on start up. 5*

  • Hi yes system is 24 Volt.

  • Thanks

  • ahh the sound of a true diesel

  • thats awsome

  • sounds like a 50 liter motor

  • got a bit of an exaust leak

  • That engine must a have a quite low compression ratio, when it starts that bad even above zero. That, or something's wrong with the fuel governor. The enormous racket it makes from 1:15 really hurts my ears, do that too often and you will probably crack the head or pistons, those are enourmous peak firing pressures!

  • That question has been asked by myself. I too find it strange that starting is so difficult at what is not a particularly cold start.

  • I would say alot of the cranking was done with a compression release pulled . they was building up oil presure before they turned the fuel on . and all diesel's knock and rattle on cold start . my god man have u ever heard a Train fire up in cold

  • There is no decompressor on this engine. I know the knocking is perfectly normal during startup, what I was questioning was if the engine was low on compression which it is not.

  • Once it's running the engine is sweet as a nut! Total running time is around 600 hours.

  • Cummins have intake heaters so thats why it doesnt have glow plugs.

  • Not on this baby!

  • Isnt it bad for the starter. Sweat generator.

  • The starter is huge, and this generator is used in colder places than this one is. I have been looking for a water heater for it, but not found one yet.

  • back up generator? whats the main one like then?!?

  • You Dumbass, Backup Gen sets are for when the main power goes out, thust Backup power kicks in as in Generator.

  • yes i know what a backup generator is, i have since i was like 5...i said if thats the backup generater the main one must be huge, learn to read please

  • Ahh I love the clattering of the pistons. My dad's freigtliner makes that same racket when we're starting if after it sits in the cold

  • man, you woke up the beast ;)

  • Cummins not Cummings

  • Oh yeah! Cheers for that!

  • poor starter

  • gotta love that diesel knock........

  • dam son !

  • She sounds so sweet

  • Considering that this is a backup generator, probably with autostart, this engine requires a very long cranking. Direct injection industrial engines should start easily at 2°C also without glow plugs.

  • The trick with this engine is to keep cranking until at least one cylinder can keep the engine going. If you stop cranking the heat generated by the compression is lost.

  • If i hear the starting i would run it sounds scary lol

  • Exhaust looks like a class 37 cold start, CLAG or whatever they call it lol
