@phellinisinistra That's really stereotypical and mean. I love all of my dancer friends, and you're just jealous of how incredibly talented Mikhail is.
@TwinkleToes841 Yeah right, I studied ballet with John Barker and Madame Darvish at the time that Baryshnikov was working with ABT - I went out of my way to meet with him, Not that I was anybody or even anything near a good dancer as I started at 21 and with one year experience I found myself in ABT doing classes with professionals. I walked into ABT and there was Misha, he looked at me, I tracked him down to John Denvers and meet him in the hall, he gave me a dirty look. part 1 of 2
@phellinisinistra perform at wolf trap, dance at ABT as a principal, win more competitions than baryshnikov, be the subject of multiple movies and become world famous. Then you can judge baryshnikov.
@TwinkleToes841 I've been around plenty, studied with lots of famous people all over new york, I've surpassed that bull, and I know who misha is, and I'm not impressed in fact I'm unimpressed. Misha's got nothing, sure he's a great dancer and I like watching him dance. But right now I'm not a bad dancer either. But I'm a much better writer, so take you plie's and dump them, I found something much better. Thanks for your remark happy dancing.
@phellinisinistra Just because you had a bad experience of one of the greatest dancers of all time who might have a bit of an ego, doesn't mean you get to criticize dancers as a whole. To me, it sounds like you're the one with the lousy personality, not dancers.
@TwinkleToes841 Would you go away. When will you ever say 'job well done.' Typical type human. Now go away and hang with your dancer friends. And by the way I don't need friends, you do. I have other things to do, besides talk with dumb humans.
@phellinisinistra I'm just trying to defend dancers. Don't make a comment on a page that you hate dancers if tons of dancers are going to watch and fall in love with Mikhail. Whatever.
I was a four year old little girl the first time my parents brought a tape of him home to let me watch the Nutcracker, and watching it I thought he really was a prince! Even watching him now, what he does is still unreal! I don't even have enough words to describe it. He dances Corsaire with such abandon and enthusiasm and emotion, but never loses that incredible technique. Still my favorite dancer.
There will never be another man like this in ballet. The movements, the blurred lines between technique and musicality, the fluidity, the artistry... He set the standard in every category and no one has come close to him.
@Beaslby This is from a Misha documentary entitled "The Dancer and the Dance" (1981), which is ostensibly about the rehearsal, planning and performance of a full-length ballet by (the late, great) Chu San Goh, but is really "all about Misha"!! DVD's weren't around back then, but it's still available on eBay in VHS (for about 10 bucks). Very entertaining to watch!!
@CLASSICALFAN100 THE FIRST TIME I SAW MICHA LIVE WAS IN 75 ,AT HIS DEBUT IN ITALY,SAW 3 TIMES VERY CLOSE ,1 MEDEA WITH FRACCI AT SPOLETO,2 GISELLE IN FLORENCE AGAIN WITH FRACCI 3 IN VENICE DON Q WITH KIRKLAND.JUST ONE WORD TERRIFIC.GOD BLESS HIM.
It's just that Le Corsaire is not merely about complicated movements or moving incredibly fast. It's about presence and power. That's why it's Godunov's.
was is that called at 0:42 ??? this is the definition of perfect. and his spotting? it literally is like watching someone flip a card front and backwards
THAT is how this variation is done, so strong and full of intensity!! i hate it when i see it done so "la de dddaahhh" so to speak, it should be go big or get off the stage
taka another look... watch both back to back and look at the delivery Alex is a great dancer but i've yet to see him do anything with this height, flow or ease as Baryshnikov does here or other performances...
take another look... watch both back to back and look at the delivery Alex is a great dancer but i've yet to see him do anything with this height, flow or ease as Baryshnikov does here or other performances...
@deliciakobri I have to respectfully and HIGHLY disagree! I looked at Alexander's performance because I was curious and he is nowhere near Misha's level of technique, musicality, performance or that "magic" a great dancer gives.
@deliciakobri l can't agree loved godunov, but micha is superior, and not only him,saw live also vladimir vasiliev in corsaire,no comparation, and yuri soloviev?
Why are there apparently so many more videos with good picture quality of Nureyev than of Baryshnikov? You'd think it would be the other way around, since Baryshnikov is more recent.
and what is frightening is that in a 60 Minutes interview, when this clip was replayed in his presence, Misha couldn't look at the TV screen. He said something to the effect of "wishing he'd done it better". The only thing maybe "amiss" is briefly falling off of releve in his attitude turns after the diagonal. But who cares? I think he executes this variation better than anyone else. The unrelenting momentum, abandon, pictures he etches into the air, seamless transitions.....amazing indeed!
@j1s6 It's called a reverse 540....at least that's one name that is given today....which is essentially a barrel turn whereby the back leg "jumps over" the leading leg. Speed and good elevation is the name of the game.
Eventually, our hero in the field finally stepped down and co-founded the White Oak Dance Project with many other dancers. Well, he had a good run.
Many in their 40s and 50s - all run under no director, but as a democracy. Baryshnikov says that he is in great physical condition, but one day he will step down from dancing completely.
But let us all pray... he will never give up the ballet... may he die with his toe shoes on..

Went to see it five times in three days, could happily watch it on a daily basis.
Remember when I first saw this in The Turning Point (I was about 8) and I was so blown away. NUREYEV didn't even do 0:33 when he performed this. Pure genius
