Hi again. Over Christmas, I took my original Big Hauler out of my display cabinet, replaced the dried-up traction tyres with multiple layers of Bullfrog Snot, put batteries in the loco and transmitter and ran it! Hardly missed a beat, with no sign of the drive gear shrinking and splitting as some owners have reported. Even the cheap chuff sound effect worked.
Are you sure yours took 8 D-cells? Mine definitely only takes 6.
Nice,Nice.................I will make a video of my big haulers steam train called hill valley it is made to look like the train from back to the future. I took off the plastic coal cap in the tender and put a sheet of cardboard in to cover the inside of the tender and filled it up with real crushed coal and added a shovel and a cooler for the train drivers drinks
@skybluedragonator Hey you are right... no headlight. This engine is now decor at a local restaurant so I can't check but I believe there was a bulb. In the video I'm running on 6 D cells (9 volts) rather than 8 cells (12 volts). I don't remember a switch for the light, only for the sound. Most likely I disconnected the bulb when I rewired to save the batteries. -CL
Great sound bite. Bachmann bash idea for sound in battery operated unit's is a memo minder (dig. recorder) an a small amplifier and speeker. Key it with a magnetic reed. Pull your sound bite from any of your favorites. All can be installed in the tender with on-off switch on bottom. All for under $30.00
I have the R/C Big Hauler set. I often thought about how I would paint it to give it a more realistic finish. I don't think I would paint over the "Russian Iron" boiler, but definitely the cab, wheels and tender. The driving wheels could be modified so that the balance weights are a more correct size for each wheel. If only one could adapt the Walschaert's valve gear parts from the later Big Haulers... Nice to see yours still earning its keep, even without a radio control.
@JBofBrisbane Hey JBofBrisbane... The newer Bachmann 4-4-0 and 2-6-0 look and run so much better I retired my first generation Big Hauler. I mounted her on a plank of polished wood (after cleaning her up) for my mantle. My new Bachmann's are here: flickr.com/photos/classiclanterns/4853266564/
As near as I can see in the old photos my Pacific Coast Ry did not use Russian Iron.
wow! g scale trains are very imaginative and they rock. I'm working on some kitbashing myself. (frisco 4503 post hungerford) i'll make avid. of it as soon as i'm done
Like all first generation Big Haulers, this engine runs on flashlight batteries. I run DC on the rails for all my other engines. Thanks for the question.
Google "Bachmann Big Hauler" and you'll find tons of info. This is the single largest selling G Scale locomotive ever made. You can find them new and used at bargain prices.
Wobbling along in true Bachmann fashion. Seriously, you did a nice job. I had one of those radio sets years ago and it didn't run nearly as good as the one in your film.

I noticed about a minute in that the headlight doesnt work. is that true, does it have an on/off switch, or was it never supposed to work?

Question, if you don't use DC power, then do you still use those electric tracks or customize your own tracks all together?

Thanks! The wobble somehow adds to the charm. I don't think I'd want to ride it but, it's cute.
