There is so much misinformation about the US auto companies. They are asking for a loan that will be paid back..not a bailout. That is an irresponsible media term. The auto companies have a problem because of the credit crunch. That was caused by the banks and directed by the government. The US auto companies are the only companies in the world that are not subsidized by their home country. We do need to even the playing field. We should raise the tariffs on their cars like they do ours.

The US Congress should not bailout the US auto industry. Foreign automakers have a sizable advantage when it comes to costs. Approx $80 US to $40 foreign. The US Congress can provide immediate and long term relief by introducing legislation that rolls back the decades long tax and regulatory burden US automakers have had to carry in comparison to the foreign automakers. When costs are reduced then there will be more money for research & innovation.The bailout is only a stop gap measure.

I work in the paper industry, we have lost so many blue collar jobs lately that I can't even put a number on it...my daughter's 10th birthday , her main gift was a warm sweater for winter, she saw the tags on it and said,"wow ,and no body ever worn this before me"! What people do not realize that while Toyota and Nissan have enjoyed the free market in the US they are not bogged down with retiree benefits. The Big 3 have generations of benefits they pay out every month and those include dependants too. They add $2K to each car to cover cost the foreign auto makers dont have to cover. Good point! I have met a lot of people that tried to work at a Goodyear plant close to where I live that makes passenger car/truck tires. Everybody wants to work there due to the higher wages, but alot of people quit because they can't handle the work or environment.

These times are our best chance for significant change. Hopefully the old ideas will die and the new, sensible ideas will take their place. However, the only way this can happen is if nations themselves don't collapse, as well. That is to say, sure, maybe we'll have to live through an economic depression, but seeing the complete collapse of governments would not be beneficial, as all our laws and rights would fall with them. Economies can be rebuilt, but rights are not gained back so easily.
