Go Jack!! Ely's, The Man! --Clearly this guy is a defining element in the magic '63 single. Still got it!, that spirit & feel...I can imagine seeing The Kingsmen with this guy fronting -- boisterous, swaggering, raucous, rowdy, silly, visceral, rousing! The good old days...
That sux Jack. Sing it the way you did back in '63. That's what made you infamous. (sheesh) The rest of you "experts" are full of crap. Read Dick Peterson's book.
I would love to read about the "louie, louie" recording session back in 1963. I heard they all got together in a garage or studio and played the song and recorded it with one microphone. that's amazing! that raw sound & jack's vocal are incredible sounds. did jack play bass while singing it? he looks so young in the videos. "louie, louie" was voted no.55 in the rolling stone greatest 500 songs of all time. I can't believe we haven't heard from jack ely since that unforgettable song.
thomascomis, they sold this song for like 60 bucks in a recording studio yes in '63 but they had 4 mikes suspended 10 feet from the ground. they had to scream to get the mike to pick it up they also didnt get credit for it for a while
Rick7550- Who told you there were 4 mikes suspended 10 feet from ground? I've interviewed the Kingsmen, producer Ken Chase and Bob Lindahl, and nobody told me that story.
LOL! when he said "me say" he even messed up this time! in the music vedeo, he messed up and sayd "me say" 1 too many times and STILL after all these years, MESSES UP!!! LOL!!!! HOW FUNNIE IS THST!!!???
I think he did it on purpose this time because it was left in the original recording. I saw him repeat it in another live recording too. He's not the greatest vocalist in the world, but "Louie Louie" is still a classic!
oops..thought it was joe ely

There is a whole book on the various version of Louie Louie and how the Kingmen's version came out on top. I think Dave Marsh was the author.

@rick7550 your wrong bud. one boom mic hanging from the ceiling that was pretty far from Ely. he had to stand on his tip toes to reach the mic.

Jack Ely was never in any videos with the Kingsmen, nor did he ever tour with the original band after the original recording in 1963

Jack is still doing alive and well, taking care of horses in Oregon. He sends me silly email jokes all the time!
That being said, if you get the chance to see Jack Ely live in concert, drop everything and DO IT!

Greatest Rock & Roll song ever written. But... It's a latin american song penned in Cuba.
