I feel so sorry for this family her cells contributed so much to medicine today. This family who shares her DNA doesn't even have health insurance and that is appalling. I hope they get what was denied them for years because this family deserves the chance to have a better life by getting financial security and the healthcare industry owes them that.
Oh boy, are the Lacks family owed millions, if not billions of dollars. Medical science have made trillions of dollars off the HeLa cells. Lacks family, get whats yours.
@vampireknightx101 Actually, before they were called "HeLa" cells, they actually used her full name "Henrietta Lacks cells" in many different publications. But as is the case, she wasn't considered a human being, so they couldn't care less about her privacy or rights. But karma is a son-of-a bitch, which is why the cross-contamination of HeLa cells dogs the medical profession to this day. They can't get rid of them. They show up everywhere. Serves them right.
so cancer cells don't survive or go through mitosis and copy themselves usually just hers? i don't get it. and why are her cells sold for so much, why don't they just take cancer cells from somebody with cancer now?
@dlair85 all cancer cells dnt act the same way... a tumor is a mutation, so tht cell was a mutation tht could probably never be recreated.. thats why its so special, its one of a kind and keeps dividing.
@dlair85 Her cells were unusually prolific even for cancer cells. Other people's tumors had been sampled the same way, but the cells didn't behave the same and died off.
The 'medical' industry should get together and at least purchase health insurance for any descendant of Henrietta Lacks. They have certainly profited from her death and her cell immortality, let her family live.
BTW, I'm not African American. I just believe, what's right is right.
I am reading the book right now. It is hard to take one side or the other but you would think that a billion dollar industry could find enough cash to at least provide health insurance to the family as some sort of an extended payroll benefit type of deal. I don't think these people asking to get rich, however a society must take care of its own. To me it seems fair that they be given something. Think of the rights we grant to the families of great composers and writers....
If you put two and two together blacks never get reparation or reimbursements they deserve in any account.you always have some demonic android talking about let it go we should only let go tax paying and consumer support.Ps.obama is bs
the carilion medical franchise that has taken over majorityof Roanoke hospitals'is probably heading secret research in their new medical school built in the city.there are negative statements unsuprisingly saying Lacks is insignificant in the case that others have been helped by the research of her cell division.the crazy thing is if skloot isn't sharing profits with her studies and book sales she is evil all the same as the rest of these calcified demons.between lines they research her family
I live in Roanoke district and work in Roanoke .I heard about Ms.lacks online 1st thru Bobby hemmitt I noticed an article in Roanoke times about a year later.I had seen on national news mid 90's Roanoke is the most Racist city on the east coast, Roanoke in her time period had a Black hospital and probably sent her to Maryland knowing they didnt have the means or understanding of cancers.they are evidently racist practioners in baltimore.too bad they couldn't have done research themselves
THIS FAMILY NEEDS TO GET A CLUE. THEY OWE YOU TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS!!! YOU SHOULD NOT BE LINING IN THE GHETTO WHEN YOUR OWED AT LEAST HALF OF THE MEDICAL BILLION DOLLAR INDUSTRY. THERE IS NO EXCUSE TO BE IGNORANT OR LOWER CLASS ANYMORE. YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR ANCESTOR CONTRIBUTED TO THE ENTIRE MEDICAL COMMUNITY, GET YOUR MONEY AND GET THE HELL OUT OF THE GHETTO!!! GO ON EVERY NEWS STATION, EVERY NEWSPAPER, GET EVERY LAWYER IMAGINABLE, AND GO TO THE SUPREME COURT. YOU WILL GET AT LEAST 100 MILL!!!
@TheGreatOldOnes Yea, thats a old comment I made. I still agree with what I said. Even if this family is just happy with how their ancestor changed the world...it should NOT be held secret. She is an African American Legend, that has saved most likely millions of lives yet THE WORLD knows nothing about her.... That is NOT fair to her legacy, that is NOT fair to this family & it is NOT fair for the African American community.
Henrietta's legacy & her descendents deserve so much more.
If you want to know more about the government's calculated efforts at population control read The Rich and the Superrich or any books on the Tuskegee Experiment, small pox infested blankets given to Native Americans in teh 1800's, the origin of Planned Parenthood and free public birth control. Look up the Lake Mohonk Conferences on the Negro Problem and the Native American problem.
This whole situation reminds me of the reasons why there has been a great distrust of doctors in my family and in the Black community. My family is from Alabama originally so the horror stories of what happened during the Tuskegee Experiment and then, this woman from Virginia reinforced this mistrust.
This woman got a biopsy, like others at the hospital. The doctor that was doing research on cancer cells got lucky with her specimen.
That some of you think she is some kind of hero is sad.
If her doltish family should get a payday from the results of the biopsy that resulted in a fantastic culture...should they pay for how these same cells infected other cultures?
@3244wpl You sir/ma'am, are an idiot. And there is no use in attempting to explain the fallacy of your "logic"....as my words would fall into a pit of idiocy....mixed in with all the other idiocells that permeate throughout your brain.
You want to make a public acknowledgement for all of the well insured and rich fuckers that have benefited from Henrietta's never ending supply of cancer cells AFTER she died long ago of cancer and her family cannot afford health insurance?

This is a dam shame. ONLY IF YOU ARE BLACK & IN AMERIKKKA!!!
They create genetically modified seeds & sell them all over the world
with a patient & no one even after buying them, can regrow or sell from
that seed. Its a Federal law of protection. The same gov. & the
research labs have been growing & reproducing the living cells of this
woman, to the amount of billions, & no moneys given to her family!!
The patient of a seed is worth more than the seed of a black woman
in AmeriKKKa!
