  • what chords?

  • steve morse style, nice dude. !!

  • lol yeah dude just use a volume pedal!

  • you can also use a pedal to do this

  • pick up a Morley Little Alligator and this will be ten times easier. but this sounds really good!

  • This video was posted to a guitar newsgroup today as an example of volume swell. I kind-of knew what to expect when I saw the Morse guitar. That was very nicely done!

Do you just have delay or is there a chorus effect as well?

It sounds very familiar, so is it following something that Steve actually did or is it just a Morse-like progression?

Either way, I enjoyed it very much.

  • Would've been better with a volume pedal.

  • Steve Morse guitar and you hold you pick just like him.

  • great

  • does any one know the name of the danish person who plays bach music on a electric guitar with a hollowed out fret board he is really good at violining

  • @fdsdh1 unless you mean me (I'm a danish guitarist) I think you're probably thinking of Yngwie Malmsteen from Sweden..?

  • awesome technique, awesome guitar, and awesome playing :)

  • this is amazing.

  • Tune That shit

  • Nice

  • Sweet job! Very good, the audio in the vid is also really good, which is a nice change to most vids on here. I only wonder how youre getting it to pan?

  • beautiful sounds coming from me fingers:)

  • it's not easyer whit a volume pedal?

  • ya it is

  • do you have tabs for this?

  • Your pinky looks like its made of rubber or something. Like the tone though, good effect! What guitar is that?

  • It's an Ernie Ball Steve Morse signature Music Man... I'm pretty sure.

  • @lando885 its a steve morse ,musicman

  • lol i found out how to do this by accident once at one of my bands concerts

  • That actually sounds kinda Holdsworthish. WHICH IS IMPOSSIBLE so thats a huge compliment.

  • That´s nice and very good!

  • hay pedaleras que te hacen ese efecto sin tener q trabajarlo

  • Awesome!!

  • Very well done. May not be the cleanest, but very beautiful, nonetheless. I love the chord progression and use of tonal swells.

  • haha you just straight up said fuck a pedal

  • also check roy buchanan in austin TX(old vid) for some soloing ideas

  • sorry but thats what all my teachers say it slows you down lmao

  • sounds great but you really dont need your thumb over the neck like that

  • it does slow you down. but what does that matter when you dont care about speed? and anyway you can just learn how to use both types with thumb or without thumb.

  • y spend money on a pedal =)

  • coz you cant do faster on just a knob... altho this way would be a 'purist' way.

  • For effects just turn up the reverb. That's what I do at least >>

  • Great technique. As with anything mechanical the Pots do wear out eventually though , the good thing is they are quite cheap & easy to replace. using your feet with a volume pedal is a safer however its tricky to get such fine changes with big clumsy feet!

  • nice... what effects are you using???

  • What effects do you use in this video?

  • Thank you so much for demonstrating this technique. It's been killing me trying to figure it out!

  • That is so cool. Joe Bonamassa is a good exponent of this technique in Blues Deluxe.

  • he is

  • get a volume pedal it makes it easier.. and ya can do more trust ive done it this way for years... when swelling chords it's better.. swells sound good

  • really really good i enjoy, like steve morse i am waiting for "cascades's solo" from deep purple, can you post the tab? if yes can you contact me on youtbe? thanks

  • cool, organ sound........thanks for the video

  • what guitar is that? is pretty cool

  • is there not some kind of pedal that does volume swells?

  • volume pedal?

  • there is a volume pedal. Ernie Ball makes them.

  • indeed. not just ernie. theres millions of em.

  • Bands like Hammock and Stars of the Lid have actually based their carriers around this technique.

  • nice

  • whats effects are you using? Sounds great, I really like that sound. Thanks

  • your pinky looks funny..

  • sounds like your volume knob might be slipping, but i don't know for sure. just trying to help.

  • I have a problem, after executing to many swells my volume knob goes crazy, it has almost the same volume when placed in 0 that when placed in 10, but then after a I while it goes back to normal, any ideas , I dont want to mess my guitar by making volume swells, at least i think that should't happen. WHAT'S WRONG? PLEEEEEASE HELP!!!

  • stop using the knob, get a volume pedal. the yamaha FC7 volume pedal is about 25 bucks.

doing anything repeatedly that isnt normal to a guitar (like volume swells or toggle switching) can mess the guitar up. just stop doing it, find an alternative. just in case you didnt know, toggle switching is where you turn the volume on one pickup on and one off, then use the 3 way switch to flip between the two. alot of guitarists use it for a tremolo effect.

  • what did i do? i was just giving jfnd777 some advice. what the hell is your problem? i fucked up my dean by repeatedly using a toggle switch, and im sure its the same thing with him on the volume swellls. he was having issues, why should he keep doing it?

  • haha sorry man drinking and computers should be outlawd..

  • hahaha alright.

  • using your toggle switch for a tremelo effect is a bad thing indeed, however, doing volume swells with a knob shouldnt harm your guitar. Steve morse does them every single day and show, maybe that's because hes playing a Music Man worth at least 2000 bucks.

    Either way,

Using your knob should not harm your guitar what so ever, it's a normal thing to do...

    thoughts anyone?

not trying to diss you or something, just exchanging opinions and experiences.

    cheers

    J

  • Yeah there's no way it would harm your guitar...its a knob its meant to be used...some people do use volume pedals. I just use the knob and echo... kinda hard to do tho because my right hand has to leave the strings.. but the sound comes off with more warmth and smooth when you use the knob.

  • sounds like your volume knob might be sliping, but i don't know, just trying to help.

  • Excellent!!!

  • thats pretty cool man

  • Check out allan holdsworth, very gifted player

  • Very nice! Bytor and the snow dog on rush' live album has an incredible volume pedal solo. Not many people use them anymore. Keep up the great playing.

  • Very cool man!

  • to much like steve morse!!! the picking style and even the guitar wich is a music man steve morse singnature i beleive..

  • im getting a guitar soon and i cant wait to do that

  • it's cool but you know you can buy a pedal for that.

props for having good skill for it though.

  • hahahaha lmao thats what i was thinking but theyre fucking exspensive

  • ur right dude they do get pretty expensive, but is that not a music man?

they cost a pretty penny too

5 stars on ur taste in guitars

  • really enjoyed this -- good job!

  • that was pretty sweet man

  • damn you have a big pinky!!!!

    awwsome

  • It's fun when you have a GR-20...you don't have to do anything like this....so wonderful.....:D

  • dude your finger looks like a worm or some shit

  • Steve Morse is a badass. His violining touch me almost to tears. Damn, I want to play like that but when i turn the knob it is hard to turn it back (to 0 point)so the attack is brightly able to hear :(.

  • awesome stuff

  • Sounds awesome. I, personally, like volume swelling with reverb and crazy delay lol.

  • it's funny your position finger jja!

i'm use all the hand (:

  • that was sick,

but man, your finger looked weird

  • can u pass me the tab of that plz

  • You can really get some beautiful ambient sounds, have you tried a volume pedal?

  • very nice

  • you* sry

  • what notes are yoy playing?

  • The first guitarist I've seen use this technique is Brain May on "Brighton Rock Solo", and you've very close to nailing this technique :)

Nice tone as well man, keep up the good work :)

    Top rating :)

  • Hey, sounds great. Those Morse models are killer guitars. What were you're delay settings if you don't mind me asking? And what chords were you playing? Thanks.

  • very nice. What type of pedal are you using?

  • reverb and maybe some echo

  • Beautiful :)

  • sounds fantastic. did you use any other effect? *5 stars*

  • nice composition, and cool tone. But with swells you might want to let it ring out more (play slower) and increase the milliseconds on your delay. Just an observation, Unless your going to to do EVH "Cathedral" then this techniqueo works best with more repeats. Check out my Boards Of Canada cover. :)

  • beautiful

  • i love this

  • yea i just got the y2d a week ago, killer sound! its a little morse bright them my other morses but its good for highway star cause im doing the steve morse version at a gig, the version from there album "total abandon" second song is sometimes i feel like screaming.... oh yea hope you can complete "sometimes i feel like screaming". rock on!

  • same here! big steve morse fan! i have this guitar, and im going to buy the smy2d soon...cant wait! nice job!

  • thx man :) i hope i can get the smy2d too...but for now...my plan is to buy a tube amp...maybe some hughes & kettner...the switchblade sounds really good :)

  • you been watching some Steve MOrse videos on Youtube for tone/volume picking?! EeeyY?!

  • yes, that too :) i am a big steve morse fan...but it isn't just the youtube... i know this technique from his other diverse songs and solos and i've met him live backstage on a dp concert in germany...he invited me :)
