@GaylordFocher I like that part of the song as well (2:18+). It reminds me of Social Distortion's "Mommies Little Monster". I know they are not exactly the same, but I can't help but think that Mike Ness might have been influenced a little:
@GaylordFocher Mick Jones is a master of economy in both thrythm guitar, leads, and backing vocals. Total champ. and Topper Headon on drums - don't get me started. Has to be in the top 5.

The fact is:

You are forever an original member of the CLASH!!! And you give us Big Audio Die-no-might!?????
mick jones always wanted the band to be a megaband. he was never inclined to the punk roots of the time, but they were just as much a band of the period, and essentially had to play punk. you might be able to tell the songs that he penned largely from those by strummer -- his look -- and his penchant for longer "rock" chords. bernie also contributed to the duality of punk "message" and popularity.
BTW I always liked the Clash which obviously includes Mick Jagger. I mean Mick Jones.
I am a pissed off punk rock fan that happens to be bitter about all contemporary Rock music and extra pissed about fucked up politics of our day. Fuck OBAMA too.

we punks die hards probably have a lot about obama, rock music, and music writ large, that we agree about. my hope is that the current econ/pol climates will spawn something just as vital.
You sir are arrogant. BAD being a pop band? If you went out on the street and asked who Mick Jones or Big Audio was, there would be a very small group of people who knew him. Where? Most critics have panned this because of the over produced sound. Hey this was my first Clash album, purchased in '78 and it still send shivers, but I see "The Clash (UK version" and "London Calling" on critics lists, not "..Rope." I think that the first three songs on this album would have made a perfect EP---three powerful fucking songs delivered with the intensity that they deserved.
The Clash's first album? I said MY first Clash album was "..Rope. I wasn't able to get "The Clash" import version until months later of their debut where I lived here in the States. The Clash's first album is maybe the greatest debut in rock history. Did you actually read what I said? I never bought the damn US version of the "The Clash" coz I'd already bought the singles and had the import.
And Blender as a serious rock journal? LOL. Yeah, okay.
Let me add one more thing here. This is my very fave band. And "...Rope" is the music that I play when I want to turn the intensity up. It's loud. Tommy Gun is the one song on the album, as great as Safe European Home is, that I want to listen to every time I want my heart rate to increase. And it always pisses off the neighbors that I don't like.
You say "Nobody talks about them." Where you been? When Joe died, when they went in that bogus HOF, so many people spoke more highly than ever.
Right around the time that Joe died a lot of people were saying things that they didn't when this song came out. There was a lot of talk then. The English rock press, for what ever it's worth, started hating them, Joe being the focal point. When he died, a lot of those same people came out and said how great he was. "Rope..." was given a different look and was treated as a great work. If there's still back issues of Uncut's Clash issue available, you should get it. Amazing how time changes view.
Tommmmy Gu-un, a you could be a hero in an age of none. Punk rock? Sock puppets? Watch the video on my channel.

When Joe died, when they went in that bogus HOF, so many people spoke more highly than ever.

yeah. Me too. This is my personal favorites.
They rocked.
I disagree. After they went to the Rock of Fame and Joe died, still people aren't talking about them or any punk artist.
There's too many metal heads and blues junkies fans in rock music. I can't stand them.
