  • @kirstym84

    I don't know.

But Mr J. Strummer only ever picked up a guitar to try and change the world.

  • Read Chris Salewicz's excellent biography of Strummer, "Redemption Song", and you'll find out.

  • @GaylordFocher I have the book and its a great read

  • this is amazing :D

  • this band rocked the music world !!! so glad i saw them many times ,....

  • The passage from 2:18 to the end is one of the best bits of rock music EVER, in my humble opinion.

  • @GaylordFocher I like that part of the song as well (2:18+). It reminds me of Social Distortion's "Mommies Little Monster". I know they are not exactly the same, but I can't help but think that Mike Ness might have been influenced a little:

(can't post full link on youtube) v=rVT08zFIH9s

  • @GaylordFocher Mick Jones is a master of economy in both thrythm guitar, leads, and backing vocals. Total champ. and Topper Headon on drums - don't get me started. Has to be in the top 5.

  • Ahhh, there's nothing like the Clash and Joe, either before or after, and there never will be. One of a kind, incredible, and on and on and on. Tear in eye.

  • i am so sori PBANDSNOW for what i said. i was having a headache.SORRY!

  • Good download.

The volume comes over about twice as loud as any other track I play on youtube.

And that's the way it should be.

  • Dare I say the last great rock band?

"And if death comes so cheap/

Then the same goes for life!" In '79 when I heard that line, that was it. Rock music changed. I couldn't not be a Clash fan. Even though I'd listened to punk for over a year, something about that line, the absoluteness of it, said to me "This is what rock n' roll is about." Haven't looked back. We were treated to something special. Something to give a fuck about. The inspiration...

  • yay

  • r.....i......p .........j...o...e

  • aaaaaaaaaah I remember when rock actually meant something...Joe, I will always remembe you

  • what's Jerry Seinfeld doin' in Mick's place??!

  • our world needs more Joe Strummers

  • Too true.

  • I just watched "the Future Is Unwritten" again yesterday. The end always gets me. I mist up. Joe was a very real human being. Good, bad, great, bitchy, intense, arrogant, failable, venerable, brilliant, and egotistic. Just like the rest of us. And yeah, we need that. We all need to see and hear that from our pop heroes.

I ain't gonna form a cult around him but yeah, we could use more Joe's.

  • i might make a cult for him

  • I couldn't have said it better.

  • Love seeing the Canadian flag in the background

  • Haven't heard this in a while, still gives goosebumps on goosebumps 30 yrs later. Lucky enough to see them twice live in '82 and I think '84...Toronto, then Buffalo. Awesome song, incredible band, RIP Joe...the world misses you

  • This features one of the greatest guitar-breaks in all rock history.

  • Agreed.

  • what's a guitar break?

  • great accent and song hails from Argentine

  • Love this song. Gets me pumped up. The great thing about The Clash is that they stood for something.

  • except disturbed sucks? RIP Joe Strummer

  • CLÁSSICO TOTAL !!!

  • if disturbed can cover a phil collins song ,they could cover this?????

  • Great production, great song. Punk that sounded as good as metal. The Pistols were the meteor that flamed out , amazingly. These guys lived long enough to make their statement. Two different styles and views.

  • The Boys, always ahead of the curve.

This song, about International Terrorists becoming Posters Boys, Rock Stars, and Celebrities, a full 23 years before Bin Laden.

Damn this band were the best ever...

  • gotta love the clash

  • WHAOU que de bon souvenirs !

  • joe strummer was amazing!!!....pretty hot in this vid too :)

  • obama can keep the change ill just let u have it

  • wats that mean?

  • Greatest band EVER. R I P Woody.

  • WHICH ONE IS WOODY

  • Woody Mellor was Joe Strummer's first artistic name. He changed it later to the name we all know.

  • joe

  • @elvis316

    his names joe.

  • @elvis316 I would thumbs this one up a million times if I could!

  • @elvis316 damn dude he hated bein called woody

    r.i.p JOE

  • 2:19

    all riiiiight...!!!

the essence of rock and roll...

  • St. Joe! This band changed my life. This man made me want to be better.

  • The clash kick ass

  • The Clash doing this number is amazingly tight! The Clash are awesome!

  • THE ONLY BAND THAT MATTERS

  • Joe Strummer R.I.P.

    Mick Jones...?

    Stay away from recording studios.

  • Shut fuckin up... The Clash are 4 members .

  • mick jones always wanted the band to be a megaband. he was never inclined to the punk roots of the time, but they were just as much a band of the period, and essentially had to play punk. you might be able to tell the songs that he penned largely from those by strummer -- his look -- and his penchant for longer "rock" chords. bernie also contributed to the duality of punk "message" and popularity.

  • Thanks for that. Well explained.

BTW I always liked the Clash which obviously includes Mick Jagger. I mean Mick Jones.

I am a pissed off punk rock fan that happens to be bitter about all contemporary Rock music and extra pissed about fucked up politics of our day. Fuck OBAMA too.

  • you could say i liked them too. named my first son london clash, and clash ____ happens to be the name of my business. the period -- and they were instrumental -- changed my life, or life's direction. i was also starting my teen years, and life evolving anyway. in retrospect i liked the cali scene as much.

we punks die hards probably have a lot about obama, rock music, and music writ large, that we agree about. my hope is that the current econ/pol climates will spawn something just as vital.

  • Go to Ramones at US festival.

  • Big Audio Dynamite is a disgusting experiment that rivals Michael Jackson's neverland. Mick Jones is a freeloading, pop star wannabe in my mind.

  • You sir are arrogant. BAD being a pop band? If you went out on the street and asked who Mick Jones or Big Audio was, there would be a very small group of people who knew him. Compared to Micheal Jackson... Who doesn't know him? If you think Mick Jones is a freeloader then you don't appriciate the clash and need to fuck off.

  • Read what I posted before you respond toasthead. I appreciate the Clash.

Now go have another petite glass of champagne you limp wristed fool.

  • I'm 14 bro.

  • Finish your summer book report and go do some community work.

  • probably cause micheal jackson was always on the news.if u asked someone who the clash were im sure u would find laods of people who would say they were a band from the 70s.

  • I was talking about Mick Jones band after The Clash Big Audio Dynamite

  • JOKAMAJA, while you are entitle to you're opinion, i humbly disagree. whilst the ramones were very intstrumental in the punk rock movement (hell, that's how the clash got the idea for punk), look at the facts. the clash are champions of the genre and have rightfully earned the title of the "only band that matters". there's a lot more to the clash that have influenced the longevity of punk sub-genre's than the ramones ever did.

  • i liek ramones better then the clash but i do think the clash were a better band but maybey not as influential.besides for helping create punk rock ramones also gave the foundation out to the genre pop punk and theres the genre ramonecore which is basicly bands who play lie kthe ramones.

  • Laugh out fucking LOUD!

Hence followers. Mick Jones is a wuss.

  • well as to Clash such as super band though .but got pretty much onto regge music instead pistols sweated out pure punk rock

  • but the pistols had one album dude

  • that`s true

  • yeah, but that one album was awesome.

  • u dont know anything about music then!!!

  • I play guitar my friend

  • My earphones almost exploded! AWESOME!!!! :DDD

  • Por Siempre The Clash!

  • that was big

  • Jokamaja what planet are you on. The only poser here is you.

  • The Clash is a distant second behind the Ramones.

If you will be so kind to reset my adjective from poser to:

    Very good followers...

  • Not bad for a bunch of british fucks.

  • dude, wow...XD fucked up

  • best clash song

    time to go rob banks

  • Douche bag Warren Kinsella, from Jean Chretien's reign, played with poor young Joe around this time. Warren claimed that the liberal ten year rule was "punk rock" in the toronto star when Joe died - in a front page obituary (glad joe was dead and never saw the shit). Warren The Clash were about everything you were not as an adult.

    RIP JOE

Rot in Hell Kinsella Brothers. You bastards! I'm younger, smarter that you and will kick your ass in Canadian Politics.

  • What is up with the canadian flag in the background.. Trudeau is PM? Please. no

  • there's not just a canadian flag, there's japanese, german, etc.

    Canada is not singled out.

  • the best BAND EVER!!!!! tommy gun one of the best songs of all time VIVA THE CLASH!!!! R.I.P JOE STRUMMER

  • Buddy of mine, saw the Clash live, yes he did.

Unfortunately, by the time I hit an age, where I started to care about music, they'd already broken up.

Great song, great video, thanks for posting it.

  • very good gun indeed

  • the saaaaaaame comes for life !!!!!!!!!1

  • give 'em enough rope was a highly underrated album

  • It was overproduced :(

  • underrated album?

It's been on every critics top album list.

It's underrated because no one talking about it.

  • Where? Most critics have panned this because of the over produced sound. Hey this was my first Clash album, purchased in '78 and it still send shivers, but I see "The Clash (UK version" and "London Calling" on critics lists, not "..Rope." I think that the first three songs on this album would have made a perfect EP---three powerful fucking songs delivered with the intensity that they deserved.

  • Whate are talking about cabronte. Look at the critics site.

    Rolling Stones

    AllMusic

    NHM

    Blender

    Timer

and other critics hailed The Clash 's first album.

All of their albums except the last one are very critical acclaim.

Nobody talks about them. They are so underrated.

  • The Clash's first album? I said MY first Clash album was "..Rope. I wasn't able to get "The Clash" import version until months later of their debut where I lived here in the States. The Clash's first album is maybe the greatest debut in rock history. Did you actually read what I said? I never bought the damn US version of the "The Clash" coz I'd already bought the singles and had the import.

And Blender as a serious rock journal? LOL. Yeah, okay.

  • Let me add one more thing here. This is my very fave band. And "...Rope" is the music that I play when I want to turn the intensity up. It's loud. Tommy Gun is the one song on the album, as great as Safe European Home is, that I want to listen to every time I want my heart rate to increase. And it always pisses off the neighbors that I don't like.

You say "Nobody talks about them." Where you been? When Joe died, when they went in that bogus HOF, so many people spoke more highly than ever.

  • yeah. Me too. This is my personal favorites.

    They rocked.

I disagree. After they went to the Rock of Fame and Joe died, still people aren't talking about them or any punk artist.

There's too many metal heads and blues junkies fans in rock music. I can't stand them.

  • Right around the time that Joe died a lot of people were saying things that they didn't when this song came out. There was a lot of talk then. The English rock press, for what ever it's worth, started hating them, Joe being the focal point. When he died, a lot of those same people came out and said how great he was. "Rope..." was given a different look and was treated as a great work. If there's still back issues of Uncut's Clash issue available, you should get it. Amazing how time changes view.

  • Just like MJ and Elvis, But joe is 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 Times better

  • Oh no... people have different taste in music than you do, your music is the best...

    just enjoy it man!

  • Oh Christ all mighty !!!!!! One of the best songs ever!!!! Thanks fotr posting!!!!

    Joe R.I.P.

  • fabulicious

  • this song is pure awesomeness :D

  • this song is awesome

  • this song is so awesome!! >:D

  • <3 I love the Clash

  • This is the Clash album that stands the test of time, the production is excellent

  • the future is unwritten RIP:Joe Strummer
