  • the balance ? you're putting only one side of it, your side

  • ロックに哲学を感じさせた激ナンバー、音空間を埋め尽くすムーディー・ブルース、"THE BALANCE"~マイク・ピンダーは真のプログレ人間

  • I look back on my life and I realize that this song, which I first heard almost 30 years ago, had a more profound impact than any other. I'm so grateful.

  • This song brings me to tears. I'm only 18 years old, and honestly I haven't got much life experience, but it gives me great hope that maybe some day I will have understanding of the world and of myself.

  • Gotto say, one of the best songs ever.

  • Excellent.

  • question of balance was my first moody blues album -- i got hooked

  • Jesus is the one I had to run to, as much as l love you. He loves you more. Ask him to show you truth and come into your heart.

  • Always, makes the world a better place.

  • This is really a "life-changing song". It's the transcription of love into music.

  • @Ashluke80

I loved your comment so much, that I posted it on YouTube. I hope you don't mind.

  • @cavstevie thats wonderful! Mike would love it.

  • @cavstevie You're welcome...let's spread love and good music too!

  • While Mike reads the recitation, the songwriting is actually credited to Graeme Edge & Ray Thomas.

  • Oh how beautiful....Kate

  • What a truly beautiful and soul inspiring song. The Moodies are such a phenomenal band of pure perfection and brilliance. This song is full of real truth and emotion . A truth of who we are and how it has truly always been. Of who we are as humans and the answers that we long for so deeply within us. The Moodies have touched so many souls throughout the years and continue to do so to this day. Their music has truly impacted my life. Beautiful!! The Moodies forever my friends!! ☺xx♥

  • @moodynights4ever Thanks for the comment. I am going to their concert here in San Diego, this Sunday. Should be great as always.....

  • @stevesilvia That is so cool my friend. I am going in 2 weeks to see them so pretty excited. I havent seen them in concert since 1993 and I know it IS going to be great as always... The Moodies never let us down!! ☺xx♥

  • @TheMrtimmy28 yea great show as always and about my 15th concert with them. They still sound good.

  • Mike Pinder speaks, Graeme Edge wrote the song.

  • even with in the veins of the leaf; you can find magnifent effection

  • Wonderful...thanks ! :)

  • Just a thought....The ' map ' at 2:25........why does it not have North or South America?

  • @artscriticXX - its not a map, its a globe unless it was shown from a very weird angle it would have to show both North AND South America. But don't worry at 2:59 the Americas ARE shown.

  • Mike what a good tune and thanks for the years i have been playing this song i hope you remember me from the Bag Of nails Wilf

  • as I live and breathe, there will be no better song

  • Compassion and consideration for others. Not too difficult, really.Yet so alien to so many. The song says it all.

  • Vilken låt

    tompaspa

  • qui voudrait me traduire un petit morceau de cette merveilleuse chanson poème

  • Awesome message of peace and love! :-)

  • If you have ever broken something that you really love and everytime you try to fix it. It just does not seem to stay together. Then we need to see that it really was not broken to begin with, we just belived it to be. True love can never be broken it is eternal

  • One of the few bands whose music will trancend time. The lyrics and beautiful music will always connect to the present day. Too bad we still haven't learned after all these years. Moody's for the world hall of fame.

  • Just in case you forgot that where you are at is not necessarily where you should be. Aaaah, where would the Moodies be without Graeme?

  • touching bravo

  • Great lyrics!

  • Such a lovely song, so very touching.

  • The Cosmic truth will ALWAYS oppose violence

  • Beatiful video to an important song!

  • I rediscovered this song a few weeks ago -- mangnificent

  • To the heart, from the heart - music by the Moody Blues has always inspired a greater sense of compassion in my soul, a path to higher truth, and for that I am always grateful.

  • pretentious but so right, make a better world and start with yourself

    real sixties feeling so okay

  • It´s like Buddhist lyrics.

  • Graeme wrote the poetry, Mike spoke the words.

  • I am Confused....I saw thwe Moodys live in Long Beach California in 1981 and Graeme Edge performed this song...so who originally did the vocals graeme or mike?

  • @DavelovesRealMusic: It's Mike Pinder reciting a poem that (I believe) Graeme Edge wrote. Justin Hayward sings the background.

  • Mohammed said that in God's eyes, all men, women, and children are equal. Violent extremists are those who in any religion use tangential passages to justify their power over others, using fear and brutal intimidation to repress the human spirit of their fellow man and woman. But most people are tolerant, moderate, and compassionate towards others - only in the extreme is there cruelty. And those who follow Mohammed also follow Jesus. Increasing opportunity changes the equation.

  • @chuckkottke that is the best collaboration of Christianity and Islam. There is a history between the 2 called Judaism and I have always thought of Islam being from Satan but from that analogy you can see that like Christians in the past (Crusades) and current Muslims (Jihad) have misinterpreted the own teachings.

  • The root of both is in Judaism, true. Yes, I believe that is true also - it is misinterpretations and the focus on the intolerant parts of the teachings by those bent on power and control that leads to extremist leaders. And poverty, insecurity, inequities, and lack of opportunity and education leads to more followers of the extremists. Reversing poverty, offering fairness and opportunity changes many minds.

  • @chuckkottke So you are saying that the Muslims of the world are poor, passive objects, powerless to resist their own ignorance, filth and malevolance, sitting around waiting to be changed into creatures of light just as soon as the West changes 'the policy'.Its all on the West, right?

  • Not at all, but considering how hard-line governments operate, it takes time for opposition, and when those controlling the wealth do not share, strife builds. To understand poverty in the Muslim world, and a long history of repression, you get a sense of it. True, there are some branches of the Muslim faith leaning towards monolithic thinking, but it varies widely. It has more to do with each countries history & present government than it does with Islam. Look at what's happening in Iran.

  • There is a problem undeniably with certain mullahs and sects, and governments, within the Muslim world, leaning towards totalitarianism. It is as intolerant in places as the Puritans were in America at one time. But one does not change people's attitudes by blunt force; but by good example, truthfulness, and putting forth our best selves do we win the trust and open up minds, and it takes time, usually a generation or more. Look at Iran. Helpful to build a middle by less hard actions.

  • @chuckkottke there is another problem too, extremist christians, extemist hindu,s,extremist religions in general.look inside yourselfs, experians yourself your good things your bad things and believe me you are going to accept yourself as beeing human that wy education is the key thing in this world.

denie people knowledge, denie people enough food and you have a war on your hands.

  • @ThePeeterd True. Education, food, jobs, dignity, & the golden rule are a great beginning; a dialog, mutual respect and tolerance, the modern world for all it's flaws & needs of reworking is part of the path to peace and harmony, if we will again find equity and checks & balances in the frameworks established on earth by we humans. Hatred takes root where ignorance, frustration, & economic problems exist; Peace takes root when enlightenment, opportunity, freedom, & a healthy economy is.

  • @chuckkottke Yeah yea, right. Funny how the extremist in Christianity are in the hills of Appalachia handling snakes but your so called Islamic extremist are running countries and kingdoms! Where is this vast body of moderates protesting when the terrorist strike? No where, because you approve. Dont trot that line of shit out in front of me, I am not fooled, I know you seeth with hate for the West beneath that burqa and turban.

  • Funny how extremists in any religion are not tolerant of those who don't follow them and their narrow views to the T. Baker's bunch are just snake handlers? Hardly. True, there aren't as many moderates protesting - partly because the U.S. government had backed hard-line rulers, and the moderates have been squashed. I wear no burqa or turban - I am fully American, and a staunch defender of individual liberties. And if we want those moderates to grow in numbers, change the policy.

  • I love it , I've always wished all humans could see life this way

  • It speaks to me of someone lost in the race of life, running and competing; & finally seeing the light. Within us all is the potential for enlightenment. Compassion and reflection are essentials toward deeper understand.

  • Graeme Edge wrote the lyrics, Ray Thomas wrote the music, and Mike Pinder did the speech. And the moody Blues sang all together.

  • I see this and I remember Bill Clinton bombing innocent Serbians and I think why?

  • @thechessstick

Ah yes, the "innocent" Serbians who murdered 8,000 Bosniak prisoners at Srebrenica and who attempted to drive 1.8 million Kosovars from their homes a few years later.

  • You really don't believe that propaganda, do you?

  • @thechessstick

Film, photos, witnesses, corroboration by scores of international news services--clearly "propaganda." Are you a Holocaust denier as well?

  • @mowbray1980 (birth year?). You don't understand propaganda, do you? The U.S. Colonel first in charge of watching things in Yugoslavia said that every time without exception the Muslims were the ones who broke the cease-fires. He was promptly removed and replaced with a liar. When the King is a liar he surrounds himself with liars. According to Hitler and his media there was no holocaust. I don't believe it but you would....

  • it's too bad that you have such a negative outlook on a troubled but talented man...the world needs less negativity like you have shown.

  • This is a Hayward / Thomas song with the lovely soft but powerful voice of Mike Pinder

  • That high pitch shreaking harmony has got to be somewhat painful on Lodges vocal chords in the back ground. He has done that so well over the years. It's a perfect additive to their music greatness. I'm so thankful he rejoined the band after getting his engineering degree.

  • Watch and learn....

  • johnny cash

  • I thought drummer Graeme Edge wrote these lyrics

    Capt Sam

  • It`s amazing! Compliment 4 writing her such great lyrics into the gb...

  • If we would harken to the guys with the guitars rather than the guys with the guns our world could experience an outbreak of peace and justice.

  • If you recall the song by either The Police or just Sting... "I hope the Russians love their children too". There are over 50 wars going on all over the planet. Over 95 percent of them involve Islamic Extremeists who think it's ok to strap explosives to themselves and / or their children to kill as many infidels and their children as possible in one event. Keep the music coming, but don't be naive about who is at fault for all the carnage.

  • @phactchecker You really should check your facts--first the English and now Americans have and still are forcing their Western capitalism and consumerism all over the world, destroying governments that don't agree with us and interfering w/their lives. That's why so many people "hate Americans"...we think we have to show the world how to live but only mess things up and destroy their preferred way of life with McDonald's, Walmart, et al. You'd be angry if they came and did it to you.

  • OK, I'm willing to be edified... tell me which countries you are referring to.

  • @phactchecker: your claim that 95% of current wars are caused by Islamist extremists is not correct. The US is in the Middle East to spread their version of "democracy" by allowing fundamentalist christians to proselytize and convert the Muslim population. This is to enable US corporations to move in and take over. Apparently, with their immense hubris, they never heard the words to "The Balance". Neither will they ever understand.

  • I did not say "Muslims", I said Islamic Fundamentalists. If you think that it is Christian Fundamentalists who are behind all Capitalism, you are the one who needs to get your facts straight. Its' not even politically correct any more to be a Christian in the greatest Christian nation that has ever been on the face of the planet. By the way, there are Moodies songs which have a Catholic influence. I believe that Melancholy Man speaks about hiding in her ( Mary's ) love forever more.

  • no more pain

  • What a wonderful song! Great social justice video! Thanks to a friend for sharing it with me... peace :)

  • Eloquent and poignant. Another wonderful Moody Blues song.

  • Comment removed

  • Magnificent perfection!

  • love it

  • The closing vocals on this track are indeed Justin Haywards.

  • What a beautiful song and video!!*****:)

  • Our time is near, very near.

  • has & will always be one of my most favorites of all time*****

  • This is timeless stuff .

  • It sent shivers down my spine over 35 years ago when i first heard it and has done again now ! An anthem that everyone should aspire to.

  • such a great song....too bad this could not be played at the Obama inaugural

  • Its getting better.

  • This family feud is getting old.

  • This song makes me cry and I love it.

  • 2 score & minus 3 years ago this song helped save my life. While the internal conflict of the Viet Nam war raged throughout the essence of this soul, I nearly gave up hope

A Navy buddy shared this album. As I listened each cell of my being turned to the Light of Truth as a flower turns to the Sun for sustenance in the early moring hours

You see, my vision so dwelled on the "mud of the earth" I forgot to look up to Love in the Light. Joy is a quest of focusing vision on what is real.

  • one of my most favs********

  • Incredible song...but it wasn't from Mike Pinder...

  • one of my most favs from years ago, never get tired of this****************

  • One of their most powerful and profound songs. I first heard it as an impressionable youth 25 years ago and it still gives me goose bumps. Almost makes me weep with joy....

    The Movement...!!!

  • Wonderful job...and so needed these days...

    Just open your heart...

  • Magnificent Perfection

  • This is the last song of the first side of their classic LP "Question Of Balance." Still sounds great 38 years later!

  • Please, someday. Peace on,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

  • Just open you heart!

  • Thank you for sharing this if only the people in power understood like your video.

  • Bloody great job! How could you not love this video or this song?

  • This video is like a lost jewel. It should have 10x the views that it does. I feel fortunate.

    Keep your balance.

  • To err is human..

    To forgive.. divine!

  • I always come back to this song...it means forever....

  • "...and he thought of those he hurt; for he was not a cruel man..." *sniff*

  • I have to correct my self. The festival was called the Seeds of Compassion....sorry....my mistake.

  • Let's all sow seeds of love.I just watched the Dali Lama on TV during the Seeds of Love festival in Seattle this past weekend..When I listen to the Moody Blues songs especially OM I think of the symbol of the heart surrounded by the Lotus flower and I visualize how lovely this world could be in the future...But it takes more than songs, no matter how inspiring, to make this world a better place.Open and think with your heart and may life be filled with bright blessings.

  • May we all become lifted & balanced. We can be fulfilled embracing & elevating self & others.

  • Thank you for sharing! I adore!

  • Beautiful music to a touching video. Thank you for sharing!

  • I really agree with you. My mind has cleared again.

  • Berrygirl, I agree no other music gets into your heart and soul like the Moodies!! This is true with me too. I can't quite explain it but it's real. Do you think that's why Moodies fans are so passionate about this band??

  • I've probably listened to this song a thousand times. Yet each time, I "hear" something different. Perhaps it's because I'm no longer just listening with my ears, but my heart and soul as well. The Moody's are the ONLY music that lets me do that.

  • YES ! THANK YOU STEVESILVIA

  • Graeme edge poetry = WIN

  • I totally agree with you about Graeme's poetry. Recited by Mike Pinder's smoky voice.....perfection!

  • I should have met you earlier in my life.

  • Am I the only one who notices the blatant psychedelic imagery?

  • yes

  • A beautiful music video that in many ways summarizes my life. Thank you.

  • thanks for sharing this great song.

  • Okay - I thought it might have been Mike but wasn't sure. He had a real presence on this song from start to finish. Thanks for clearing this up.

  • That last part is Mike Pinder saying, "just open your heart, yea yea yea"

  • While I like Pinder, I wouldn't credit him with this... that is a SINGING PASSAGE, and has got to be Hayward's... Let's face it, Hayward's got some pipes.

Lodge is pretty cool with the high-pitched woooo-hooooo background.

Pinder gets credit for the poem recital and orchestral sounds (via the "infamous" Mellotron).

  • I still say that the very last audible voice singing out at the end of this song belongs to Mike Pinder. However, he's not singing "just open your heart..." he's singing out something indiscernable, but it seems to be really coming from his heart.

  • @stevesilvia : Actually, you have that backwards. Mike Pinder "was" the lead singer and it's his voice that reads the poem. It's Justin Hayward, who was the lead guitarist then, that sings the background...(fyi).. Mike Pinder is no longer with the band.

  • Very good video to a great song! Can someone tell me whose passionate voice comes in at the end of the song just after the moment where the video ends? It's one of my favorite parts, but I don't know what's being said.

  • I have researched "The Balance." It was written by Graeme Edge and Ray Thomas. Recited by Mike Pinder in the song. My all time favorite song, or did I already say that?

  • My most favorite song EVER! There is none other as meaningfull to me outside of Gospel.

  • I feel so far past this argument. Catch up.

  • Sorry, but Graeme Edge wrote this not, Mike Pinder

  • Great video!!!

  • 'One of the title tunes from our Question of Balance album,' - a wonderful thing to hear at a Moodies concert. It meant that they'd play The Balance. Lovely song, inspiring to anyone who listens. Always makes me reflect upon how little I've done to improve upon my relationships with other people. This montage is nice, but if you understand the English language, it's really entirely unnecessary. Music needs no video As a video, though, I rate it highly. Well done!

  • Lovely photo montage for a timeless message song!

I hope you enjoy the video I've posted to you. God bless.

  • many have made that connection to spirit through this song, and the moody blues, time travelers eternal... thanks

  • This is a amazing song. Those very deep and wise lyrcs.

  • It was because of songs like this the Moodies became my favorite group. No on else would do something this different and make it work. True originals. It is Mike Pinder speaking but the album credits Ray Thomas/Graeme Edge as the writers.

  • Yes indeed, the moody blues are unique. They have a real message for all humanity to listen and learn.

  • Great song to a well put together video!

  • superb

  • Very nicely done, with my favorite Moodies song. Thanks!

  • wow , i love it !

  • What a great video to a great song. Im so glad that someone could capture what Justin and the boys are trying to say to everyone. Im 30 years old and my mother is the one who would play The Moody Blues to me as an infant. I have a great respect and love for those guys, thank you for the video!

  • Great song. Nice video. Well done my friend!

  • very moving. well done. and not one of the usual moodies songs chosen...5 stars.

  • Thank you, This was harder to do than I thought it was going to be. The more I listened to the song the more I found within it.

  • nicely done!

  • I love this song - your video is beautiful!

  • thank you for your comment.

  • the last song from the album "A Question of Balance"

    an exellent one too.

  • beautifully justified. enough said. Thank you.

  • thank you for your thoughts.
