  • I agree, Ilyakori. Truly one of the best performances ever.

My mom thought she was Mariah Carey when she heard this.

  • I TOTALLY see how your mom could think that...just listen at the range and the control that she has...very reminiscent of Mariah.

Glad to see I am not alone in my admiration of her extraordinary voice. She's also an actress, mostly daytime soaps back in the day and the occasional prime-time cameo.

She was actually dating Kevin Eubanks, the guitarist from Leno when she recorded this. He also played on this album. Thought the connections would have been enough to make her a star...guess not.

  • @NatTurner sounds much more like Whitney Houston

  • @1pixie

To me Tammy sounds like Mariah, but this song sounds like Whitney. A bit "smoother" brand of sentiment in a style like Michael Masser. The lyric s pack so much imagery, almost like its sung by a character who was to be written for.

  • @NatTurner does not sound any thing like Mariah nor Whitney, clean the wax out your ears.

  • @gragidram: you are clearly illiterate as well as a moron.

  • Thank you for using perhaps my favorite ballad of all time. I think it is probably one of the most overlooked vocal performances in history!

To this day, I still don't understand why Tammy Townsend isn't a household name. Gorgeous woman with an even more astounding voice...seemingly tailor-made for success.

Truly one of the great ironies of life.

  • @Ilyakori

    well put

it does feel overlooked like a prize in a box of cereal in its own little space on the album. Its such thoughtful song and a truly remarkable performance, she puts together a real loving blend of hope and woe,,,,,, and she lights it up at 4:20!

Thanks! And yes...the imagery that exists within the lyrics floored me, as does the care and grace she exhibits with her delivery. My favorite passage is when she sings, "If you ever have to go away...I'm going too." Man...I get SERIOUS chills every time I hear that line...because she REALLY makes you believe it.

I remember looking up info on the song and came across a review of it and the album. This HACK actually referred to the song as bland and mediocre! SERIOUSLY???!!!

Apropos of both the matters of overlooked performances AND of the relative virtues of B&W vs. color (not 2 mention well-put commentaries thereupon), mention should be made of the luminous string writing of the legendary Clare Fischer. Particularly relevant is Prince's acknowledgment in the closing credits of UTCM, re CF"s indelible contribution 2 that film: "Special thanks 2 Clare Fischer 4 making brighter the colors black & white."

  • @dvdspd21 As a huge Prince fan, I should have recognized Clare's work immediately. Thanks for pointing that out. It is indeed a major part of the song's allure. It seems so obvious now. LOL!

  • @Ilyakori

My pleasure; CF's music is a real passion of mine. But if U2R feeling the Fischer, I would direct U2 my channel, where I've done videos 4 a number of his more obscure, mostly 4-hire credits. Or u could just seek out the following playlists:

❶ Unmistakable, Unforgettable: Clare Fischer Strings

    or, for something more all-encompassing

❷ Clare Fischer: Man of Many Parts

Sadly, many of the CF Xmas videos I've done fall under the Sony playlist ban; 4 those, one must search my uploads.

  • @dvdspd21 Thanks for the tip...will do. He is a true master.
