Oh, man! Benny Goodman is my hero man! I'm in eight grade and play clarinet. He inspired me to become a musician. And Rachel Skittles, great job!!! I made All Region and got first chair, too. :D
My main instrument is clarinet and I wanted to play it in my High school jazz band but they said I had to play tenor cause clarinets "aren't" jazz instrument..I told them to ask Benny Goodman..I still had to play tenor
i love playing the clarinet there are so many things that i never knew could be played hopefully i can get to be able to play like this when i'm more advanced but for now i'll stick to playing in high school.
TT_TT trying to convince the dudes in my jazz band that the clarinet IS a jazz instrument!!! nobody believes me and when i play my goodman's they say: "thats for trumpets and saxes!" TT3TT
@LaquimasLinto They're idiots. Many, including myself, consider Clarinet THE jazz instrument, and it was widely considered such until the rise of the sax in jazz in the early 1900's. If you want to join their exclusive jazz group than play sax. If you can play clarinet already, sax is as simple as 'turn the key and go'...at least it was for me. See if they need a tenor sax, that was my favorite, and same scale/key interchangeability applies to it as well.
Anyone have any sheet music or chord progressions for this piece? My little cousin wants to play this piece for a competition. I can't find anything out on the web.
I love this! Maybe after I'm alot more advanced I can "try" to play some Benny Goodman:) hehe but for now I'm just gonna take some pride in being a 7th grade 1st chair clarinet in Honor Band:)
@MissRachaelSkittles Go for it! The world needs younger players to take up this music. Well done on being in your Honour Band though! I've just started playing trumpet, inspired by my favourite jazz musicians :)
@MissRachaelSkittles haha, 'cause you mentioned you were a 7th grade 1st chair player in honor band... trumpets like to make a fanfare for themselves like that. XD
@MissRachaelSkittles OH I get it... Honor band is like an All-District or All-State band, right? I thought it was just in your school (eg. your school has different ensembles of different playing skill). Just so I can get an idea...what's the audition range for your chromatic scale on clarinet? Is it from low E to fourth octave E or low E to a few notes higher up to G? (some states do it differently) And do you slur it up and tongue it down, or reversed, or is there some other pattern? thanks XD
@averyfatsnail12 low G to high G and we tongue the entire thing. Yhup it was an all-district thing. My school had ...32 kids try out and only...24 made it. The band from my school(there are two bands- concert and Jaguar[Jaguar is the upper band]) and I'm 2nd chair in Jaguar Band. The first chair clarinet is Jag. Band.... she was in honor band but she was in the second row.
@averyfatsnail12 back when I was way into school band, we had All-Conference, which was regional & chosen from our best members to represent our school, & those judged best there went on to All-State Band. All-Conf participation was at the discretion of your instructor, & you were seated for performance at the main showing by both an ensemble & solo piece you could choose from their approved list. I went All-Conf for a total of 5 years in JH/HS, but never state :(
@juancho661 Oh wow... 6th grade was fun and all, but I was SO bored with the music. Maybe the first time I heard it I liked it but after only playing that music for a whole year.... it was VERY boring.

Benny inspired me to play the clarinet, as well as many more people. He was the clarinet god.

Benny said one of his big influences was Johnny Dodds, and that's easy to hear here.

This tune fits Benny well. It kind of sounds like a trial run at a Benny Goodman Trio, 1928-syle. Thanks for posting this gem.
