Second, if you were able to get insurance, did you have a pre-existing condition?  If so, were you rejected. Most states have programs for assisted care. Nursing homes are not covered. Ususally if one requires residence in a nursing home, that individuals income and belongings bocome property of the nursing home, or some entity designated to liquidate the individuals belongings. It's a difficult situation and varies depending on the individual. I happen to live with my Mother who has Alzheimers. If I did not reside here, she would need to be in a nursing home.
