  • BILL BERRY!

    Bill Berry.

    Bill dot Berry.

  • yeah yeah, the IRS years were great of course. but IMO, my personal fave era was monster, hi-fi, and up. those 3 records have some of my favorite REM songs. new adventures in hi-fi is probably my favorite REM record released. however i'm kinda partial to reckoning also.

  • @tarheel1967: Wth??? "astray" after Holt was fired? Are you kidding me? Berry left the band. That alone was why the REM sound changed because they had a drum machine for most of the songs on Up. Not because of Holt being canned. Check the interviews. The members of REM all mentioned the different sound because of Berry leaving and that they wanted to experiment.

  • @gilly775 yeah but berry left way after the first five records. there's a definate sound change after document. then again after hi-fi, which is also when holt left. and when around the sun came out they changed their sound again... but i think you're right though in that i don't think holt had anything to do with their musical direction. i like the IRS years, but i'm also a big fan of monster, hi-fi, and up also. i think people discredit some of their later records that are amazing.

  • @toribjork10 Yeah their career can clearly be broken up into sets of 5 albums: the IRS albums are numbered 5, and then the ones with Bill at Warner are numbered 5 as well. As a 3-piece band there were 5 albums. Honestly, the beginning of those sets are usually my favorite albums (although I do like Out of Time somewhat more than Green): Murmur, Green, Up of those 3 sets though, it's hard to disagree that the first set is the best artistically.

  • FIrst time I heard this, my roommate, a Southerner, came back to school from break in '84 and said I just had to listen to this. Great then and now. Just so alive.

  • It was great to see Bill Berry on drums again!!

  • Bill Berry drumming? Cool!

  • oh my. just watched that or the 1st time. can't wait for the reunion!

  • @peacefrogx I'm quite sure there will never be a reunion..........

  • The South rose again didn't it...

  • I remember watching that on tv the first time, hoping that they would play Gardening at Night for the HOF. They did not disappoint.

  • this song is one big hook from beginning to end. pure joy.

  • Peter Buck = best right hand in the business

  • This was the first REM song that I loved. There have been many since then. I will mis this band, but I feel priviledged to be the age I am , 52. I got to spend my entire adult life listening to these guys. Thank you REM for making the world a more beautiful place. Best wishes to all of you in the future.

  • epic memories!

  • i must be out of the loop...from a few comments below it looks like REM is no more?

  • Didn't know they did this one then! Brilliant; great to see Bill back behind the kit; he looks great. Miss Mike Mills' Rickenbacker bass though! But it's all good. I'm still in a state of R.E.Mourning, though I'm grateful for all that music they gave us all those years.

  • Man I wil miss this band. Genius gets thrown around a lot nowadays, but this band deserves the monicker.

  • Awesome... The 3 jackholes that clicked 'dislike' should be flogged.

  • The best song about taking a piss ever.

  • Oh man the last time i heard this song was about 20 years a go Now i only could have tears

  • R.I.P. R.E.M

    Long Live R.E.M.!

  • Thank you REM, I am privileged to have enjoyed 31 years of music with a heart and soul. Every song evokes an emotion and a memory.

  • Goodbye to my dear band. luv ya!

  • musical brilliance- even in the early eighties when no one was even capable of hearing /understnding REM's talent- they made it anyway

  • I wonder if the people in the audience, probably music industry lowlifes, even get what they are seeing and hearing. Actual musical ability/talent.

  • wonderful Bill Berry to see

  • If there is a better live version of this song it would probably kill me.

  • Love this song-always makes me cry.

  • Was this at the Agora in Cleveland?

  • So great to see them together again if only for that one night. Thanks for the upload. Great song.

  • Remember what it said in the Eponymus's sticker? "The band you grew up it". True. True!

  • Love R.E.M. all their songs had / have such great memories for me...very talented group and with such great passion, love and will always remain a favorite in my life. We are blessed for them...thank you.

  • this was the song that started it for them. not the song that was most popular or their first hit - most didn't hear it until after they'd purchased three or four of their first records. but my sense is that this is the song that they, as a band, first recognized that they were motherfucking r.e.m. beautiful.

  • The song must be important to them. I love how the lyrics seem like a bunch of gibberish but Michael is belting them out with so much feeling.

  • Chronic Town is my favorite EP of all time. Those five tracks fit together SO well, it's sort of insane. They perform it really well, I think. Great upload! =)

  • This song is my favorite from the Chronic Town/Murmer R.E.M. phase. I came to Athens the same time as they did and their music captured something in the air about that time and place, something magical and mysterious. Just a dumpy little Deep South college town of cheap beer, cheap rent, rotting wood, crumbling buildings, honeysuckles, kudzu vines, harmless bums, odd characters - the whole Southern Gothic plus a new music scene. R.E.M. dug it all and distilled it. That Muse was gone by 1993.

  • Fucking emotional.

  • @SMThomasson Dude, it's REMotional! :D

  • Peter & su Rickenbaker...que dúo!!!! Idolo!!! sos lo más!

  • ladies and gentlemen... bill berry.

  • @Grandmamaa

I met Bill Berry in 1999 at a PGA Tour event in Atlanta. We talked for 2 holes about REM and his life after REM - working his farm and spending time with his family. He was very humble and at peace with his life. A great memory I will always have!

  • And thank you REM for keeping me alive all these years so I could continue to love your music. It's so incredible to see the 4 of them together again! Most people discount REM without even listening or trying to understand how incredible they are and that they are the best band of all time. I still have a huge crush on Bill.

  • awesome

  • I'm still looking for a "Flowers of Guatemala" real video, either performance or actual video by R.E.M....anyone have any links?? This is just beyond great, thanks so much for uploading this!

  • Best song from maybe the greatest rock EP ever released. Even sung clearly by Michael, the lyrics remain enigmatic. And soooo great to see the complete band together!

  • @marcoamedrano it IS the greatest EP ever. When they first came to Lawrence, I told my friends that not only was was his voice a haunting 4th instrument, we had just seen what Impressionist Art would sound like. B4 the intelligible lyrics days, there were new treats to be found with every listen, Asking nice would sometimes snag me a lyric, but it was better to let them linger in the fog like a Monet. I look at JMS now, and myself in the mirror, and I just want to cry at how old we've all become

  • @painxtreme Wow, that analogy nails it - comparing their early music to impressionist art. Very just to compare it with a Monet, a Chagall: diffused light, beautiful, mysterious landscapes - that does capture early REM.

  • @painxtreme I agree with your analogy. As to how old we've all become...yes I feel that sometimes but then I remember the '80's - well what I can remember of the '80's and I don't feel so old. It is the news of my nest of cancers that make me feel old. Hey, at least I'll get to see some great concerts on the Other Side. :) No Fear.

  • I'm only 27 and this music came out when I was a young kid. These guys are one of the most underrated groups of all time. I think anyone who considers themselves a lover of all music must rate REM among the elite. A truly unique style and sound that is breathtaking and inspiring every time I listen. Their music sends your mind on a winged journey, soaring over God's beautiful creation. Stipe's passion is undeniable. There will never be another REM; as special as the likes of the Beatles.

  • Bill rules.

  • I love their choices of songs for their induction.

I love their perfect band dynamics

I love their all-at-once beautiful and difficult-to-interpret songs.

But, most of all, I love to see Bill with the sticks here.

  • Gardening at night = pissing by the side of the road...at night!

  • its bill there. how could be when the concert is from 2007??? thought he left the band before....!?!?!

  • @StinkiwinkiPoo This was at their Hall of Fame induction. Bill played since he was being honored.

  • great song and performance, these guys are living legends.

  • This song is so much better than the stuff I hear on the radio these days and yet it wasn't even in REM's top 10 list.. That shows you just how talented they are.

  • @Terpguy00 It was in their top 10, just not in any top ten list's top ten. I pick REM over a Top Ten list.

  • the 4 re-united. Miss u Bill!!

  • the best way to celebrate their introduction:)

  • REM are the Impressionist Art Master of Modern Music

  • Michael is just so damn cool. I wish I was a quarter as cool as he is.

  • Love the song but it's still In The City meets Holidays in the Sun. And Bill is slow (but not as slow as Max Weinberg has got)

  • One of my all time fav REM songs. I'm glad they played it.

    I never saw this.

    Thanks for posting.

  • COME BACK Bill...

  • FUCK! What a performance!!

I know we get excited about Bill - the eyebrow still OWNS the drums - but fuck; they're all fantastic on this one! Mike's vocal at the end of the middle 8 ("they said it couldnt be arraaaanged") is just amazing (different from the original version) and Peter is great and Michael is just singing from the heart...you can feel it.

    Thats a "lets-get-back-to-basics-and-in-doing-so-just-sound-so-amazingly-good and fresh"

  • Bill Berry is still a great drummer, as this video shows! He could step in easily at any time in R.E.M. again.

  • loved them for nearly 30 years now. They were at their best in 1984. But hey this is pretty damn good.

  • @Barsacrocks 1984 the year I graduated from High School - how does the time slip away

  • Actually, REM's best years were the years with IRS records. They had greater commercial success when they went to Warner Bros., but there's something about those first 5 records that is incredible. They also went astray after the fired Jefferson Holt. They always referred to him as their 5th member. I think the music went in a different direction when he was no longer in the picture.

  • @tarheel1967 Can't agree with you more on your comments from a year ago. There's not a bad song an any of the first five IRS albums. Quality and brilliance. Sure, they made good records after that but the foundation of their fan base and their following lay in the first five releases, and the Chronic Town EP.

  • @tarheel1967: Also when Bill left them, they lost some of thier magic.

  • @tarheel1967 It's a deep musical integrity: they didn't lose it when they moved to Warner brothers, but it did change. They became more popular, but there was an "innocence lost" turning point.

  • Couldn't agree more, Mr Dark. REM was never the same after Bill left the band. His drumming brings a more pure sound and flavor to their live performances.

  • Comment removed

  • cool sound and lyrics.

wow Bill is still awesome on drums

R.E.M is complete with Berry in

    the band.

  • maybe the best american band....

  • pearl jam?

  • REM is better....

    ask to Eddie vedder...

  • well, who is more successful today? PJ hasnt had one time in their bands history where they fell on hard times. PJ has never been dropped by their record label and they sell out everywhere around the world. dont get me wrong, I love REM, I went to school in Athens... but PJ is the better band but not by much. and of course Vedder is gonna give props to REM, u think he is going to say PJ is better??

  • sucessful today?it´s important for you?

well, so Lady Gaga,Jonas brothers and Beyonce are better than PJ, because they make more sucess in these days.

sorry, but REM is fantastic since 1980.

and sucess is nothing compares with it.

  • sorry dude, PJ and REM dont compete for the Lady Gaga dollar. REM and PJ to compete for the same dollar and hands down PJ is better. they are just a better band. dont cry about it, accept it and move on with your life.

  • compete for same dollar?

well, so exist any types of money in your little world?

dollar is dollar and it´s all

PJ never made one record like Automatic for the people and never will made.

  • i hope PJ doesnt make a record like "Automatic". I didnt think that was a great record.

there is no way to judge who is better unless you make a dollar comparision, and between the two PJ is still kicking butt and R,E,M. sad to say isnt moving head but trying to make their first albums over and over again. the havent shown any growth as a band since "Out of Time"

  • PJ don't make one great album since Yeld!

the 2 last albuns is good, only good...

i think that Ten, No code and Yeld are exceptional albuns, but over here.

in the last 10 years PJ never make nothing of fantastic.

REM´s album New adventures is better than last 10 years of PJ carrer .

  • i didnt even know REM had a new album out, I know PJ does. i would suspect not many people know about REM's new album. whatever, nothing will change my opinion on PJ.

  • Pearl Jam blows. They've been shite since their second album.

  • if PJ blows than you suck....

  • They should close up shop. I love the band, i really do, but they have gotten too big for my little hopefull colege mind that first opened up chronic town and spun it on the old turntable......I prefer the old memories...............

  • and they are still living, breathing people with a craft they are entitled to do with as they see fit.

  • Agreed! They shoud've closed-up shop when Bill Berry left...his departure, and their subsequent mediocrity, proves what an integral part of the band he was.

  • They should go away........I really love them, i do, but they are now too big for the little hopefull college mind i had when i first heard this song....i prefer to hold on to those memories...............plus, they play golf, which i hate.

  • Fucking brilliant.

  • By Goddesses, that song still gets me!! ***sigh***

  • This is the real REM!!!! We welcome Bill Berry!!!!

  • wonderful... didn't seem 2 be 2 real... having bill on the kit does make a difference but rem was and still is an excellent band and all the extra musicians they have picked up along the way are great as well

  • Bill Berry was a great drummer for REM

Something not said on his wiki site was that ; when he got those migrain headaches on the west coast: There was an earth quake. He almost knew when they would happen.A couple of brain

anurisums later. He tapped out. (sorry about spelling)

  • Bill Berry is the king of drumming

  • What does it mean when they give you

the honour of starting your own channel?

    And who is they?

    help 7 chinesse brothers

  • brings a tear to my eye

  • Bill Berry influenced a whole generation of drummers (including myself). Thanks Bill.

  • Including myself.

He's a great drummer with a unique style.

The (drums on the) new stuff fails in comparison.

  • Yeah, Bill!

  • It was a great choice to play this song on an important event like this!

Bill please come back! Just once to make a record and a tour! Please

  • What a great song to choose for this special gig

  • bill has this distinct style of drumming wich by my means makes R.E.M. No one beats them

  • Wow, Stipe's body language is so restrained here. Everyone seems sad except for Mike.

  • Great to see Bill back where he belongs.

  • wow! bill is back, the fantastic four again!!! ;)

  • Yes, this is awesome.

  • let's smoke another one...

  • I wanna work on Bill's peanut farm...

  • It's so good to see him!

  • my all time REM favorite the only song they vould play at the induction

  • Mike Mills cant believe hes eyes.

    Bill is back...

  • I never pay any attention to rock and roll hall of fame stuff... I regret it now. This is one of my favorite songs, I didn't know they had played it for the event. D'oh.

Gotta dig up my Dead Letter Office CD...

  • You mean 'Chronic Town', right?

  • The Chronic Town EP is on the Dead Letter Office album

  • It got re-released when it got on CD and they put both on? That's cool.

  • Yeah its got b sides and other stuff and the last 5 tracks is the chronic town ep

  • Yeah, what GlueyPorch said.

    It's a great listen-while-driving CD.

  • Bill is still the groove of R.E.M.

  • One of my favorite early REM tunes back when Michael truly "murmorred" through most of his lyrics. Brings back nice memories.

  • saw them play this on the Murmur tour. It was much better then

  • Aw, is that Bill Berry? I'm glad he played with them for this. Wouldn't have been right if he hadn't! Regarding the comments below.. REM had been together something like 17 years before Bill left. Of course they don't sound the same without him! Nothing against any other drummers but it's not the same REM without him. I bought the first album he didn't play on when it first came out and couldn't figure out why I couldn't get into it until I remembered he wasn't on it.

  • It's his songwriting that'smissing. He was sort of their melodic "secret weapon." They used to discuss how he was the best songwriter in the band in '80's era interviews, but it was hard to wrap one's head around that concept until he was gone-you could hear his absence instantly.

  • Gardening at Night is a wildly under-rated song that should be on the radio instead of all the garbage.

  • I cried.........I'm sorry. I just cried the entire time this song played. Stipe is unbelievable,

  • stunning

  • this is fucking class

  • Bill Rieflin is indeed a very good drummer, but we're talking about Bill Berry here.

  • Oh yeah... nothing against him at all... He's just not Bill Berry.

  • Agreed. He was good but he's not as good as Bill Berry. Nobody's as good as Bill Berry but Bill Berry.

  • If you can point me to great song he collaborated on or wrote comparable to Bill Berry's "Perfect Circle" and "Find the River" I'll give it to you.

  • shut the hell up about bill berry, rieflin is just as good if not better, the only reason ppl talk so much about berry is because he was there first, if it was the other way around would you talk this way about Rieflin????

  • I have to wade in...........Bill Berry glued this band for years

At their height, this was the tightest band in US history.

  • Gotta love the complete R.E.M. Anyone who hates on Bill Berry is not a true, old school R.E.M. fan. The boys from Athens are legendary.

  • Come back Bill! You were the magic.

  • which ones bill?

  • Shut up about Bill berry please he's gone get over it and Bill Rieflin is just as good

  • Missed ya Bill it just isn't the same without ya!

  • geez, bring back the long hair and this could be 20 years ago

  • Bill's sound cannot be replaced...

  • Bill should get back with the band!

  • welcome back to bill's reunion, for a short period.

  • you have so right

  • Bill was and always will be "part" of the band..

    Love you guys!!

  • So sweet to see Mike keep on turning towards Bill playing... as if he couldn't believe his eyes.

  • Bill we miss you so much! you will always rock!

it's so touching to see the boys together again...

I wish they could always do it.

  • This is a super performance of one of my favourite R.E.M. songs. Still have little idea what its about!

Bill Berry sure sounded like he's not been away from the rest at all. Great stuff!

  • great to see Berry back with the boys

  • They do sound a million times better here, live, than they have in years. Why? Bill Berry.

  • god jul

  • god jul

  • god jul

  • god jul

  • this is awsome. Great song.

  • i can't belive Bill Berry is there, like in the old days, like if he never had left

  • They should bring this version out on CD... or EP. Really nice.

  • AWESOME

  • The band sounded like in their beggining...

    pure pleasure...pure emotion...

  • the fab four...togheter...

    Bill...E-Bow the Letter Bill

  • It's a pleasure for the soul see Michael, Peter, Mike, and Bill together again.

  • Absolutely breathtaking song! It's this song that makes all the rest of their post 80's crap forgivable. You just gotta respect a band that can make a masterpiece like this!

  • It makes me feel good seeing Michael Stipe channeling the young man such was he before REM went north of Georgia.

  • The Chronic Town EP was awesome. This song gives me chills every time I hear it.

  • R.E.M was best between years 1980-1997

but after that they were still good i think.

  • Nobody ask for your opinion

    dont like your tone man.

  • Great to see Bill Berry on drums again

    he is the best.

  • Why is Al Gore playing lead guitar?

  • The Lyrics for you lucky people

I see your money on the floor, I felt the pocket change.

Though all the feelings that broke through that door

Just didnt seem to be too real.

The yard is nothing but a fence, the sun just hurts my eyes.

Somewhere it must be time for penitence. gardening at night is never where.

Gardening at night. gardening at night. gardening at night.

  • The neighbors go to bed at ten.

Call the prayer line for a change.

The charge is changing every month.

They said it couldnt be arranged.

  • We ankled up the garbage sound, but they were busy in the rows.

We fell up, not to see the sun, gardening at night just didnt grow.

I see your money on the floor, I felt the pocket change.

Though all the feelings that broke through that door

Just didnt seem to be too real.

Gardening at night. gardening at night. gardening at night

  • Your sister said that youre too young.

They should know theyve been there twice.

The call was 2 and 51.

They said it couldnt be arranged.

  • I see your money on the floor, I felt the pocket change.

Though all the feelings that broke through that door

Just didnt seem to be too real.

We ankled up the garbage sound, but they were busy in the rows.

We fell up not to see the sun, gardening at night just didnt grow.

Gardening at night. gardening at night. gardening at night
