The NIners could never seem to find a good kicker. After Wersging, I honestly can't remember anyone who was the consistant. Cofer and Cortez were worthless
this bum is why we drafted doug brien outta Cal in '94. granted, SF still got home field advantage throughout (i think he missed a FG in that game too) despite losing this game, but seifert kept cofer way too long.
Yep, it wasn't until 94 that the team finally realized that the defense needed to be upgraded. The ones that lost the 92, and 93 NFC championships were too old, and should have been let go way before that.
Age wasn't the issue, they went out and got a whole bunch of people on hte downside of their careers, hoping for one last push: Ricky Jackson, Tim McDonald, bringing back Tim McKyer and Tim Harris, Charles Mann, Gary Plummer, that is not exactly bringing in youth.
They did bring in Ken Norton and Deion Sanders and draft Bryant Young, all with the purpose of having the talent to stop Emmitt Smith and still cover Michael Irvin.
I'm talking about our defense in 92, and 93. Old players that clearly had nothing left, not talking about ones that still had a good year or two left in them. However, yes, they were outclassed in those years.
Very true. Even though they had a 14-2 regular season, they still could not hang against the Cowboys. As great as the '92 Niners were, the 'Boys were just plain better.
I VIVIDLY remember this classic game. I also wonder, where is numober 11? I'm grateful, however, to the poster. I really enjoyed reliving this incredibe game. Thank you.
I would get so excited with those 10 minute score tickers. I didn't have internet back then(too expensive) and would always get so nervous when my favorite team's score popped up on the screen.
As an avid 49ers fan for 21 years, I cannot count the number of times Mike Cofer cost San Francisco to lose so many games. I truly believe had Cofer been replaced with an effective kicker, San Francisco would've won more games during the eighties and nineties. Considering that the 49ers were the team to beat during the 80s and 90s, that's a scary thought. I vividly remember back on MNF (1993 or 1994) were Cofer missed the game winning field goal TWICE (4th/OT) against the Philadelphia Eagles.
I think that was the Monday Night, January 3rd, 1994 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. If I'm not mistaken, had he missed both of these (or something related to that matter), it would have been the first NFL tie since 1989.
I remember that game. He sucks. I mean it. I do. I really really do. He couldn't kick the side of a barn a foot away from him. I mean it. I REALLY REALLY DO!
I remember this game well. I had a friend who was a 49ers fan who called me at halftime to brag, and said he would call back when the game was over. Shockingly, I never heard back from him.
hey if you got the JEts vs 49ers game from 1992 please post it id love to see it my friend who died from Cancer went to that game at the meadowlands in 1992 at age 14 I missed the 1992 season probably one of my favorite seasons ever thanks again.
That should have been the Superbowl in Jan 1993 instead the Bills went out and blew it against Dallas (who were arguably inferior to SF in 1992)and were embarrassed. Why could they never get it done when it mattered?
Conspiracy! My uncle found an story in ESPN magazine about a responsed call from the hotel the cowboys were staying the day before of the superbowl. They found all kinds of illegal substances and lots of Cocaine, everything was ignored because they didn't want to blow off the superbowl scene which it was everything arrange to start the next day.
cofer copied norwood ...47 yrd FG wide right.

Great, my Niners can't even win in the PAST! (At least back then they played a great game, though...)

Maybe Cofer should have kicked with his off-leg. Maybe he'd make a kick, or at least have a reason he wouldn't.

This was my first Bills vs 49ers game I got to watch as a California after moving from WNY, how sweet it was the next day at school.

San francisco lost three games this year:
Buffalo
Arizona
Dallas in the NFC Championship.
So they lost to both Super Bowl teams.

The niners weren't old, just outmatched.

The secondary was rather weak, but ti wasn't age related: Don Griffin was 28, Eric Davis 23, Merton Hanks 22, David Whitmore 27.
Linebackers Keith DeLong, Johnny johnson, Romanowski and Walters were all in ther prime age wise too.
Ted Washington was a young pup at nose, Harris was 30 and hardly "old" as he was MVP three seasons earlier. Fagan was 31, not old either.
I'm not trying to be argumentative but i don't see an age issue, just a talent one.

thats because 49ers defense was ranked like 16th in the league, 49ers offense was better, but the defense could not stop aikman, irvin, etc

Mike Cofer became a race car driver shortly after this, was far better at that than he was as a kicker.

Maybe this is the reason the Cowboys beat the 49ers when they were inclined to loose. Maybe Cowboys were cheating all year and Bill could be champs.

Maybe this was the reason Emmit Smith always broke those tackles and hardly was stoped.
