love all the americans saying jeeps are best. i live in australia (though not australian) its by far one of the toughest place for cars to survive. and there is pretty much NO jeeps, there is a very good reason for that... there is landcruisers for reliability, range/land rover for the go any where you want part or nissan patrols for a bit of both, no need for jeeps unreliability and caveman (terrible) suspention design
@andrewbthomson I agree btw. I worked for Merc and they, at the time owned Chrysler (it has now passed hands to the italians - Thank god) and The dealer serviced as a Chrysler/Jeep dealer also and OMG ha ha ha ha Jeeps are so unbelievably rubbish I just dont know where to start! Seriously. The only good thing about them was the 2.0 and 3.0 V6 diesel MERCEDES engines they used!
@Shuffle3956 How so, just because the Range has electronic gadgetry doesn't mean it'll make it everywhere. The Jeep still has the most efficient axle, differential and body design for intense offroading, hence why so many chose to modify them to make them truly unbeatable. The Range and Cruiser can go through some nasty stuff but never as bad as a good old Jeep. Remember the first Land Rover was based on a Jeep chassis...
Only had this unstoppable beast for 1.5years but the 2ft snow we have in Romania did not stop it everyone around me slipping and getting stuck and in so called 4x4but, go anywhere, this machine is built for land with no roads and for pulling Land Rovers, Merc, X5 ,Q7 and so onto the garage to be fixed , l feel safe in it if you want a good 4x4 which is not going to break down buy Landcruiser. The beauty of Toyota is that won't break down!!!(185.000miles) nothing went wrong all original parts

land rover is beautiful, thats all they have in order to capture the market, the spareparts are scarce and expensive, the reliability is proven low compared to the Toyota, but heres the thing, if i want something that got style the landie will be my choice, but for reliability on day to day basis, Land Cruiser is the SUV
That is only a land cruiser in the UK, in the rest of the world thats a Prado, if you were using the proper land cruiser then the land rover would get thrashed.
The thing is, they are both brilliant. The problem though, is this. Nobody likes to bash their very expensive Discovery around. It just seems inhumane to do so. But, ya can bash around a toyota Landcruiser. Because, and it hasnt got anything to do with build quality as such, but its just your human instinct to take it easy in the Discovery, yet hammer the landcruiser. Which to me, would make both vehicles the winners. Becuase it is up to you the driver, to push both jeeps to their real limits.
iv worked in the north west of australia in the mines , with 50 degree heat rough dusty horribe terrain, all u see up der is , hilux, landcruiser, prado, troop carrier, and the odd patrol/pajero/triton, but never seen a discovery der ever!! i think dat says it all,
@rvind92g my aunty has a navara rally raid it is awsome in the snow and it surved a 50 foot tree falling on top of it there was only some minor scratches
I'm looking to buy a 4WD but not as expensive as these two. My choices are Toyota Hilux D4-D. Nissan Navara, the upcoming Chevrolet Colorado, the upcoming Ford Ranger T6 or the Mitsubishi Triton. Which one is better at off-roading and tougher all-together?
@rvind92g all are total crap off road, i drive a i lux at work and its crap! but a defender never get stuck! or a disco! navara is a tarts car! the other are soft roaders!
@danieldavies980 No way I'm driving a Defender around! Unless I mod it with 22 inches and lower it and a sport exhaust. Well I heard there's a new Navara coming out, I think I should hold out for that one. There's a new Ssangyong Korando, is that good? I mean I'm not going to go off-roading all the time, but when the flood comes in or when I travel to the jungle and countryside, I think that should be decent.
@rvind92g These cars your talking about are useless. its your choice if it was me id take an off road test drive in them. JC says his watch is 1000m waterproof he's never going to go down that far but nice to know it works if i drop it in the sink! land rover do an off road day with standard tyres they are awesome.
4 cylinder Landcruiser? I think its sold as a Parado in other countries, we wish the toyo's did 200k without a problem! its more like 60k if you work them. Interesting none the less.
I kind of look at this in a different way, not as a vehicle I'd want to show off for my friends, but as an expedition vehicle. The question is, which one do you want to have when your life depends on its' capabilities and dependability. My vote would be with my 97 Land Cruiser which currently has 190,000 miles and is still the best most dependable vehicle I've owned in the last 40 years.
Discovery. .......discover what goes wrong & doesn't it!!! What a bag of shite.....Ask the people in the Australian outback, haven't seen may in Iraq, Saudi, Libya? See loads on the school run in Chelsea (London). I think you need to smell the coffee and stop dreaming !!! Disco 3 supplied with a jack that doesn't even lift the vehicle.....wow! Handbrake problems, new clutch after 50,000 Km. Compare Land Rovers extended warranty to Toyota's...wonder why? UK J.D reliability survey LR bottom
there's one difference between the Toyota and the Land Rover. The Toyota Landcruiser was tested in the Australian outback where as the Land Rover Discovery wasn't
@StuartAlderson They did trial the Disco and Defender in OZ, but farmers and country folk prefer Toyota for price ruggedness and simplicity and lifespan only the posh buggers buy Land rovers and usually live in the cities and burbs. Rural Ozzies are very loyal to Toyota i doubt they will ever take to Land Rover. If i remember correctly the Disco and Defenders that were trialed did not cope well with the fine dust of the outback ?
@Azureecosse - Interesting comment, all i can say is ive had 3 shoguns 2 discos and 1 landcruiser, the Toyota is by far the better built of the 3,i would never have another Land Rover to many problems mechanically.
@MrLeveLHeaded Thats my point. worked on most offroad vehicles( wont touch Jeep ) rebuilt many engines trannies transfer boxes, suspension you name it, i can honestly say that Toyota's are the easiest to work on, parts although not cheap are more reliable Not saying Landrover vehicles are not up to the job just they are now becoming overly complex except Defenders . Pajero/Shogun better but tend develope premature suspension and steering problems if used for towing . For me Toyota always.

this is bullshit, he's bringing luxury into the equation. who gives a fuck, this is about the off roading capabilities, and the land cruiser wins at that hands down.
@skateboarding118 It is about the total package. If it were just about off-road capabilities, I can get you an AMC Eagle for $1,500 that will go everywhere these two will go, without a doubt.
@abcdefg41342. Grow up man . The man says don't expect the discovery to have its own way. This is probably one of the most unbiased tests Ive seen. Point 1. off road he says "ONE GETS STUCK WHERE THE OTHER GETS STUCK" and then goes on to say its honours even.Point 2 Then he goes on to say the Discovery beats the Toyota hands down on the tarmac.Whats wrong with that Its true.As for the racist comment where do your think your forefathers most likely came from. That's right good old Blighty
I would take the Toyota hands down. My father purchased a used land cruiser with 73,000 miles on it for 5,500 dollars about 10 years ago. It lasted my family a good 8 years and another 100,000 miles without any major mechanical issues before we had to give it up when the gas prices started to rise. We traded it for another toyota, a Corolla, with 220,000 miles on it, but you would never know by driving it. Based on my past experiences with toyota, I would have to say the toyota is far better.
@beaglemanzzz I would have to agree with you. I know the Land Rover has a reputation for being one of the best factory 4X4s. However, the Land Cruiser is no slouch, either. Plus, I have seen Land Cruisers go well over 300,000 miles; I have never seen a Rover come close to this.
@kc8ntp so youre saying a stock jeep vs a modded lan rover is fair? lol get a clue theres a reason why jeep owns every off road vehicle thats street legal. land rovers are more of a luxury suv.
@2WheelinTacoma I am not exactly saying a modded Rover! Most people put bullshit tires on them for one. I am talking about a stone stock Jeep, too, and not a Trail Rated or Rubicon version. No, there is not much that can tangle with a Jeep Rubicon or Trail Rated model of any flavor; to say that would be crazy. Once you put lockers in a Jeep, then you have a different animal. I live near Moab, so I know 4X4s; had quite few, and seen even more.
@kc8ntp so youre thwoing the cost outta the window, (i too know alot of off roaders with different rigs) a stock jeep can go places a rover cant, for one thing it has better articulation, and I have personally seen landcruisers walk trails where others cant get through. rovers are for luxury and thats about it, desert? maybe but i preffer a truck for desert use.
@CodeTwo2 Build quality of the Toyota Hilux has been going downhill for a long time. Toyota build quality isn't much better than Landrover anymore. Ask the boys at the hilux pickup owners club about it (hpoc.co.uk).
I've always loved Toyota's. But after my last Toyota, I won't be buying them anymore. I'll buy something German next time.
@MadMuddyZuk Sadly, you're right as far as goes recent years. In off-site, built-away-from-Japan vehicles, quality was never quite as high...maybe the cost cutting and outside sourced (shitty) parts has been taken too far - that last 0.1% "saving" is always what does it.
This said, the overall vehicle standard is still better than most, save for the silly electrical and small component faults, engine management issues etc... not QUITE as bad as Land Rover yet.
@CodeTwo2 I don't think it's luck - many, many of the Hilux Pickup Owners club members who own modern Toyotas agree with me - quality control is abysmal at Toyota right now.
Trucks with rust bubbles appearing after 6 months out of the factory. Aircon units spilling their guts into footwells repeatedly, even after being fixed repeatedly. Brakes wearing out far too quickly. Reams of electrical problems.
Old Hilux's never skip a beat. New ones never miss a chance to.
@CodeTwo2 Not for those of us blighted by one of the french-built pieces of junk Toyota is plying us with these days.
I've been a Yota fanboy for a long time. I don't want to switch to VW. When they're working, Yotas are awesome little beasts. I have an 08 Yaris Turbodiesel that is so torquey, I can still beat people off the lights when flat-towing my little suzuki 4x4!!! But I feel Toyota has left me little choice, I won't be buying a 3rd Yaris. Polo next time, probably.
@lllovevolvo All Facts in terms of reliability and longevity are way better for the land cruiser than land rover... just do the research if you don't believe me. But then again you have your own opinion.
@ps3bigboy320 Ok you've got 1998 Land Cruiser... Has it been used regularly off road? Bearing in mind our farm car is a TDI Discovery 91 and that is still doing hard off road work without any problems and will go where the Toyota will not dare to go.
@ps3bigboy320 Agree!! Just take a look at the old Bmw X5 or at the old Mercedes ML, I think that they look like a garbage!! Still the new Bmw X5 or de ML looks awesome, today, but I'm just wondering if in a few years the story it will be the same.
The Discovery takes it for me as it is so competent on road. However as it says in the video, the Toyota may well prove more reliable in the long term.
Tough call.....but I'd still choose the Discovery.
well grip is just a question of tyres really. And at the end of the day the new discovery does look like a range rover and that means it looks really good and expensive. As well as feeling nearly as good as a range rover too.
The presenter did not mention the awful reliability issues which go hand in hand with the Discovery. For some reason most armies, police forces, terrorists, mining companies, drillers, archeologists, hunters, wildlife/safari operators, outbackers, Australians, explorers, construction companies, the entire middle east, Botswana, South Africa, 4x4 owners, South & North America all prefer the same brand. Peace of mind, getting back and reliability exceeds looks, bells & whistles. Go Toyota.
@groenduif Well, you obviously have never owned one or even driven one. Discovery are no less reliable than Toyotas these days. As far as AWFUL reliability, you maybe are refering to the very earlky Discovery or evan older Range Rovers??? Hmmm?? I know I had a piece of crap Rangie (1986 model) and yes was not very reliable, but since I have had 3 dico's and a Prado. All good vehicles. Maybe don't critisise until you have personal experience.
Owned four jeeps, all were good vehicles! Broke down in three of them. Currenlty own a 05 LR3 first year production early import , 70K miles a few minor issues but has not stranded me yet. In 05 it had the best off road drive train one could drive off the lot. The drivetrain is fantastic...more complicate so somewhat more likely to have some issues...Tiger Tank vs Sherman. I'll deal with the issues but give me the Tiger!!
car made in england is just junk, people in england cant make cars...lol land rover is not evan same class like land cruiser, who care u have a lether seats, its still junk.even 4 runner is way better.
Another one who has never even owned or driven a landrover? Mate these cars are just awesome offroad. They are not junk. A 4 runner is not even able to attempt the same terrain as a Landover. GEt your fact straight before making comments.
Why does he not talk about all the historical Land Rover's troubles with the transmission, rear differential, eletronics, suspension, battery.... they are prone to ???????????
Just another wanker trying to sell you an overpriced, fuel consuming, SUV that's constantly at the shop - get real !! Get a Toyota !!

tehdrama1 2 months ago
The thing is, they are both brilliant. The problem though, is this. Nobody likes to bash their very expensive Discovery around. It just seems inhumane to do so. But, ya can bash around a toyota Landcruiser. Because, and it hasnt got anything to do with build quality as such, but its just your human instinct to take it easy in the Discovery, yet hammer the landcruiser. Which to me, would make both vehicles the winners. Becuase it is up to you the driver, to push both jeeps to their real limits.

@rvind92g all are total crap off road, i drive a i lux at work and its crap! but a defender never get stuck! or a disco! navara is a tarts car! the other are soft roaders!
danieldavies980 2 months ago
@danieldavies980 No way I'm driving a Defender around! Unless I mod it with 22 inches and lower it and a sport exhaust. Well I heard there's a new Navara coming out, I think I should hold out for that one. There's a new Ssangyong Korando, is that good? I mean I'm not going to go off-roading all the time, but when the flood comes in or when I travel to the jungle and countryside, I think that should be decent.
rvind92g 2 months ago
@rvind92g These cars your talking about are useless. its your choice if it was me id take an off road test drive in them. I kind of look at this in a different way, not as a vehicle I'd want to show off for my friends, but as an expedition vehicle. The question is, which one do you want to have when your life depends on its' capabilities and dependability. My vote would be with my 97 Land Cruiser which currently has 190,000 miles and is still the best most dependable vehicle I've owned in the last 40 years.

there's one difference between the Toyota and the Land Rover. The Toyota Landcruiser was tested in the Australian outback where as the Land Rover Discovery wasn't
StuartAlderson 6 months ago
@StuartAlderson the discovery was tested across the whole of Africa including the hottest and driest place on this planet.
MikeNspicy 5 months ago
@StuartAlderson They did trial the Disco and Defender in OZ, but farmers and country folk prefer Toyota for price ruggedness and simplicity and lifespan only the posh buggers buy Land rovers and usually live in the cities and burbs. Rural Ozzies are very loyal to Toyota i doubt they will ever take to Land Rover. If i remember correctly the Disco and Defenders that were trialed did not cope well with the fine dust of the outback ?
Azureecosse 5 months ago
@Azureecosse - Interesting comment, all i can say is ive had 3 shoguns 2 discos and 1 landcruiser, the Toyota is by far the better built of the 3,i would never have another Land Rover to many problems mechanically.
MrLeveLHeaded 5 months ago
@MrLeveLHeaded Thats my point. worked on most offroad vehicles( wont touch Jeep ) rebuilt many engines trannies transfer boxes, suspension you name it, i can honestly say that Toyota's are the easiest to work on, parts although not cheap are more reliable Not saying Landrover vehicles are not up to the job just they are now becoming overly complex except Defenders . Pajero/Shogun better but tend develope premature suspension and steering problems if used for towing . For me Toyota always.

Vouge44 4 months ago
I would take the Toyota hands down. My father purchased a used land cruiser with 73,000 miles on it for 5,500 dollars about 10 years ago. It lasted my family a good 8 years and another 100,000 miles without any major mechanical issues before we had to give it up when the gas prices started to rise. We traded it for another toyota, a Corolla, with 220,000 miles on it, but you would never know by driving it. Based on my past experiences with toyota, I would have to say the toyota is far better.
beaglemanzzz 6 months ago
@beaglemanzzz I would have to agree with you. I know the Land Rover has a reputation for being one of the best factory 4X4s. However, the Land Cruiser is no slouch, either. Plus, I have seen Land Cruisers go well over 300,000 miles; I have never seen a Rover come close to this.

@2WheelinTacoma No, a Land Rover will run circles around a Jeep if it is setup right.
kc8ntp 6 months ago
@kc8ntp so youre saying a stock jeep vs a modded lan rover is fair? lol get a clue theres a reason why jeep owns every off road vehicle thats street legal. land rovers are more of a luxury suv.
2WheelinTacoma 6 months ago
@2WheelinTacoma I am not exactly saying a modded Rover! Most people put bullshit tires on them for one. I am talking about a stone stock Jeep, too, and not a Trail Rated or Rubicon version. No, there is not much that can tangle with a Jeep Rubicon or Trail Rated model of any flavor; to say that would be crazy. Once you put lockers in a Jeep, then you have a different animal. I live near Moab, so I know 4X4s; had quite few, and seen even more.
kc8ntp 6 months ago
@kc8ntp so youre thwoing the cost outta the window, (i too know alot of off roaders with different rigs) a stock jeep can go places a rover cant, for one thing it has better articulation, and I have personally seen landcruisers walk trails where others cant get through. rovers are for luxury and thats about it, desert? maybe but i preffer a truck for desert use.
2WheelinTacoma 6 months ago
The ultimate vehicle would be the Discovery, built by Toyota.

MadMuddyZuk 1 month ago
@MadMuddyZuk Sadly, you're right as far as goes recent years. In off-site, built-away-from-Japan vehicles, quality was never quite as high...maybe the cost cutting and outside sourced (shitty) parts has been taken too far - that last 0.1% "saving" is always what does it.
This said, the overall vehicle standard is still better than most, save for the silly electrical and small component faults, engine management issues etc... not QUITE as bad as Land Rover yet.
Guess you were unlucky.
CodeTwo2 1 month ago

Go Toyota.
groenduif 8 months ago
@groenduif Well, you obviously have never owned one or even driven one. Discovery are no less reliable than Toyotas these days. As far as AWFUL reliability, you maybe are refering to the very earlky Discovery or evan older Range Rovers??? Hmmm?? I know I had a piece of crap Rangie (1986 model) and yes was not very reliable, but since I have had 3 dico's and a Prado. All good vehicles. Maybe don't critisise until you have personal experience.
