  • Brains, beauty (both inside & out) and unparalleled talent.

Since I first heard her in 1967, I’ve been a huge fan (and I must admit have had a secret crush on her like so many other men).

She has brought joy to many millions with her incomparable vocals, angelic voice and good deeds.

Johnnie Carson put it best, after hearing her sing, “When You Wish Upon a Star”, he said, “Now that’s real class!”

She is truly a national treasure.

Happy Birthday, Linda and best wishes for many more!

  • @gotti6969 Real class she is, but singing "Perfidia" in Spanish. I have a crush on her as well !!

  • 70s Women, Wow!!

  • @56kanaka that's for sure... & I ws once one of them :)

  • beautiful singing no doubt!

  • Yeah, so Warren Zevon did it best, Dwight Yoakum did a great cover of it, but Linda does a good job with it. It's basically the story that paints pictures in my head of somebody who has lived a hard, but short life and is reaching the end and will die quietly in Carmelita's arms.

  • @jehjeh37111 What about GG Allin? He did a very good cover as well.

  • I'm a heavy metal headbanger myself,but when I hear Linda

I just give in to her........ : [....bringing me to my knees, speechless

with a blank stare, bringing me down a level and feeling full of

    heart again.Thanx Linda XXXX.

  • @larryluzier including me

  • 7 people are all strung out on heroin.

  • I so loved my LP with this unforgettable song...may God bless Linda. Thank you very much!!!. Cheers!!!, Sergio.

  • This takes me back to the great ole days, listening to my old friends Dave & Carmen singing this great song in Alberta. Take care guys.

  • love it~~

LInda sings the best with this song~~

  • Simple Dreams is one of my favourite Linda Ronstadts albums and this track plus the title track, Tumbling Dice and Poor Poor Pitiful Me are my favourites. She has an ageless voice of impeccable quality.

  • @TheTrueFranchisePart2:-) Now I've seen it all, wayyy different.. ;-) There's just that much music around..

  • @TheTrueFranchise; deVille was a different cat;-), indeed, but very real! The GG Allin verson I will check..

  • A beautiful song by a beautiful lady.

  • @Abbeshay No, she's an international treasure. You don't get to keep her to yourselves. We love her down under too.

  • I like this song but i'm strung out on heroin on the wrong side of town

  • beautiful, reminds me of Tucson nites..

  • Love this song by Linda. She is one of our greatest singers of all time. She can sing any type of music and has had a major influence on most artists in these last decades.

  • I didn't know that Linda Ronstadt sang this song , having only Dwight , but it all makes sense. Great song.

  • id love to be with linda she has the sweetest voice in music

  • Warren had to love this version. This is an outstanding version of a true classic. Miss you man. Hopefully you and Roland are enjoying a lot of sandwiches while you are waiting for us.

  • @Abbeshay I remember lying on my bed thinking quite different thoughts about her... ;-p

  • the tragedy with Linda is that she has not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, she kicked down the doors for all those that come after her, I think the RRHF should be ashamed, this voice is the greatest of the last 100 years and it will be years before anyone, if they come along that can even compare to it.

  • I agree, but she won't call me back. rats!!!!!

  • a legend in her own time. perfect piece of work!

  • I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet....!!!

  • I was born the year heart like a wheel was released , so my appreciation of Linda is indeed timeless. My earliest memories are of listening to Linda with the head phones on my mothers record player.

  • Compaired to Warren Zevon, he pawned a typewriter, she pawned a pistol. A bad move, the pistol could take her further than the typewriter or the herion.

  • Compaired to Warren Zevon, he pawned a typewriter, she pawned a pistol. Bad idea, a pistol will get you alot mre than a typewriter.

  • Heroin!!! yea ya...

G.G. Allin covered Linda.. go figure....

  • It never occurred to me until recently that this version was, truly, a tribute to Warren Zevon and his talents as a songwriter. The Spanish guitar is wonderful, and it's too bad Ms. Ronstadt didn't do this one (maybe as a duet with Dwight Yoakum) on the tribute album.

  • Lovely version of a great song. But why does Linda "pawn my Smith & Wesson" (a gun) when in the original version Warren pawns his "Smith Corona" (a typewriter) ? In a sad song like this, I prefer the idea of a writer selling his last chance of making a straight living ...

  • @Tregeare - some of the early versions that Zevon did it was also a Smith & Wesson. I think he changed it later before the version that ended up on his eponymous album.

  • this is best song that she has sung~~for me it is~~~

  • It's a little hard to imagine La Linda strung out on heroin, but it's a great cover of a great song.

I worked hard to learn the Spanish guitar solo...

  • Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!

  • Nice! Zevon deserves to be covered!! When you have some time, try out the willy deVille version...

  • @TheSie1977 or the GG Allin version. It's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay different because he was a different sort of cat...but he does it well. Really gritty...very opposite of this. Still very good

  • check out the gg fuckin allin version, its much better.

  • what kind of area is echo park? its in L.A right?

  • @maziku Yes, its located just outside of Downtown Los Angeles. Echo Park became a hipster place in the 1990's as rents were starting to increase and many creative artists and people moved to the area. Quite a bit of LA history and great architecture in the area especially in the adjacent Angelino Heights historic district area. Gentrification has taken place for sure. I remember the park being a rough area many years back but have not been around that way in the past four or five years.

  • I agree with peppersdog. I love Linda's version. But the lyrics are slightly altered, and Warren did it a little better. Linda, however, has a better voice than Warren. And she was certainly beautiful too. Hard to believe someone so pretty is so talented. She still has a dynamite voice too. Like Warren, she should be in The Rock and Roll Hall of fame too.

  • I listen to her songs in spanish and can't understand them but love them so much. Great post ! Carmelita, hold me tighter...

  • omg this song brings me to happy tears remembering my childhood. i was ten years old singing in front of the mirror with a brush in my hand as a microphone pretending to be her. i loved her then as i do now. she has voice like no other.

  • Her version of this song breaks my heart to this day! This takes me right back to the winter of 77.

  • Abbeshay.......prob should be International treasure!!!, same emotions in UK LOL

  • She did a great version of this song & helped bring Warren & his music to prominence; why argue (pointlessly) about who did it better? They both did!

  • You got that right, Abbeshay!

  • awesome song!! just heard it for the first time today,

  • I've been wondering for awhile what she has been up too. Right up there with Bonnie Bramlett, Bonnie Raitt, Rita Coolidge and the rest!

  • A simply gorgeous song!!

  • Linda Ronstadt does GG ALLIN!

  • @TEMPmichaelhansen if not THE most..underrated singer/songwriters in history.

  • @Abbeshay

this is a Warren Zevon song later covered by GG ALLIN.

  • Cross Canadian Ragweed did this song best

  • @ragweedfan86 agreed! gotta pay tribute to the origin though!

  • linda is sexy the guitar chorus is heavy but i thin warren did it better

  • My favorite version....Linda...what a voice!!!

  • My sisters name is Carmelita, her birth was dedicated to Linda Ronstadt, our mom used to sing this song to her when she was just tiny, amazing how a song can affect a person so much< now Carmelita sings this song to her 2 little daughters.

  • i fell in love with LR and this album the year it came out i was 20 and through it i felt i knew all about the drug culture and West Coast USA..LOL.. well things change and we live & learn. But i still love this album..Thank you LR & WZ

  • i'll think you ll find the version by chuck farley is the best version

  • One of my favorite Linda Ronstadt songs. Just beautiful

  • bugeyes455858 Linda's top notch version of one of my favorites by the late(great) Warren Zevon. Regardless of whose tune she covers, Linda always adds her unique vocal treatment to it.She sings like an angel.

  • Always loved singing with her!Aw the good ole days....

  • Always loved singing with her!The good ole days....

  • She is reall GREAT:-)

  • Linda Ronstadts version was beautiful. Unfortunately she made one major error in the lyrics which has been repeated ever since. Warren Zevon wrote it as "I pawned my Smith CORONA," not Smith & Wesson. The guy in the song is an anguished writer in Echo Park, an artists colony in earlier L.A., who had to pawn his typewriter - a Smith Corona - not a handgun. It's the typewriter, his only means of communicating his art, that he loses in the process. That is the whole point of the original song.

  • @SLOphoto1 After this version, Zevon sang it the same way. Warren often changed his lyrics in later versions to suit the mood and I guess he liked Linda's more violent turn. I do prefer WZ's to this one.

  • @SLOphoto1 You are right about the lyric change and I think Linda changed it because she was so criticized for NOT being a writer but she wanted to sing this great song.

  • @Noah

You should go fuck yourself. Warren Zevon is one of the most influential musicians of all time. GG Allin is a piece of garbage. His cover was good, but he's a douche.

  • kickin is a motherfucker all the way i do it every 90 days (or so) usually the or so. i got the money to keep me in the habit just like to get clean.... from time to time--more often time these days than time . ------maybe mr. brownstone has got me? anonymity is grace. love--------------

  • Linda's version is best! Takes me to those younger days!

  • @pegoutube: Likes Warren Zevon, but two words: Linda rocks!

  • Love Linda but two words, Warren Zevon

  • @pegoutube Right? I was really suprised to learn that he wrote the song and that Jackson Browne produced it. Its like talent piled on top of talent, with a "cherry" talent topping.

  • Try to find Adam Duritz (Counting Crows) version of same song. I am not a big Counting Crows fan but this version by Adam is stellar. It was put out originally on a various artist CD called "The I-10 Chronicles". I think the CD can still be bought on Amazon.

  • Nigga you're tripping.

GG does the best cover of this song ever. All other versions including the original can suck on my balls.

  • You silly troll. Anyone with an ear would know that GG Allin was all show and no musical talent at all.

  • @SkitKorek The title of this album caught my attention, I realized that even though I lived in many different places in Southern California and Arizona, I have lived almost my entire life within 3 or 4 miles from I-10. Now I am very far away. Saludos.

  • First heard this song when I lived in Norway in 1980's ... one of the best songs I have ever listened to ......... love it !!!!!

  • check out willy devilles version also

  • Awesome...didn't think I'd find it....

  • Her version is beautiful hands down. GG's is probably only better to GG fans (or people who even know who he was). Because it is fitting for him in a weird creepy kinda way. Just makes it seem like he's passionate about something so different than his norm.

  • Very strange but I agree. It is kinda weird how the GG cover is so fitting and you really wouldn't think that for him. Her cover isn't bad, I guess I'm partial being a GG fan.

  • GG Allin also does a nice cover of this song

  • if you like an offkey crackhead with an untuned guitar.

  • Comment removed

  • gg version is nice too.

  • Linda's version of this tune is classic. I have always loved her. If you haven't heard the original by Warren Zevon give it a listen. There is also a tasty version by Cross Canadian Ragweed.

  • @MrFreeLibertarian I posted the song on a far left blog. Said I loved her voice...She's turned into a MAD COW!

  • Actually it would be better for us if we could bury you!

  • Absolutely right!!! Linda is a worldwide reference! Love you Linda!

  • My recollection is that the late Great Warren Zevon's first solo LP was held back from release so Ronstadt's versions of this & Mohammad's Radio would hit the airwaves first. Certainly got my attention to Warren's work.

  • the oak ridge boys should be opening for Linda, the longer i live the dummer this world gets, we gota put more money into education, we will be a third world country in 50 yrs

  • Nice song:-)

  • you are so right

  • culhane family reunion Keervile Texas we was large and in charge Uncle Miltie Dapper Dave love ya from Uncle Howie you to Tina

  • Warren Zevon wrote some great songs. This would be one of my favorites. Linda Ronstadt did justice to a few, Mohammed's radio comes to mind.

  • Rock on, Linda. Another favorite of mine. Thanks for posting this, AJmusic girl, much appreciated.

  • GG Allin does a nice cover of this song.

  • Adam Duritz does a killer version on The I-10 Chronicles compilation. Loves me some Linda and WZ.

    Pioneer Chicken Stand...

  • My friend's band covers GG's version whenever they do shows. There were eight of us on stage last week singing GG's version live. I love and prefer Zevon's version, though.

  • the Pioneer Chicken stand, haha!

  • 5 yrs and this still makes me cringe, I accually seen her do this live, opening for the Oakridge Boys, when I was 12, befor my 10 years of hell

  • Yeah,, Shes alright.

  • magnificent voice. magnificent performance. magnificent artist. I've always loved this--and Ms. Rondstadt

  • Good job. Everyone can learn from you struggle does not mean you stop trying. Listen to the Warren Zevon version too, it gets me everytime. Peace.

  • no t.v when i was little but we had music ,this song was always on our recored player, then dr hook was next, magic.

  • she is awesome, so is the song

  • Nice! Very nice. But Zevon's version of this particular song, has never been topped, ever, by anyone. It's one of those songs he just wrote so perfectly for himself. But I know he didn't mind others doing it, and this is pretty good.

Rest in Peace Warren. You are missed.

  • @peppersdog what about GG's version? You look at GG and know that he lived this song.

  • @peppersdog Yes RIP Warren---loved that guy

  • @peppersdog Amen!!

  • @peppersdog Nobody would even know Zevon if it weren't for Linda! She loved him! Saw her in concert several times and she always promoted him and said what a great artist he was.

  • @cwebsterk That's pretty harsh to say that no one would have heard of Warren if not for Linda. I have followed Linda since the Stone Ponies and I am a big fan. But, that's like saying that no one would have heard of Don Henley or Glenn Fry if they hadn't played in her band. Has Linda ever done Werewolves of London or Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner. If you don't recognize these songs you need to expand your musical horizons. Warren stood pretty well on his own. Enjoy every sandwich.

  • can't touch Dwight's version. can't even touch it...

  • To each their own.

  • My name is Carmelita :)

  • hi carmalita, the name of angels!

  • OMG!!! I haven't heard this song in years. What memories.

  • I got this 8 trac when i was 14 for Christmas. I played it to death. Wow! Those were the days!!

  • One of my favorite Zevon songs. RIP Warren.

  • i love this song and this lady, when i was young, i was a raving alcholic,on my wy to jail or death, then this young girl name carmalita, from mexico, thought i was worth saving, thank god for, carmalitas

  • oh, shit. who wrote this song???

  • Warren Zevon.

  • and Beyonce said what? DIVA? I thinks Not. Linda is a Goddess,......DIVA is something Whoopi Oprah and a Goldberg thunk up. None of them have the class and grace of Linda. Only Black woman that comes close is Retha,.......AND KoKo Taylor! hand me down some blues!

  • You should check out Cross Canadian Ragweed Cover of Carmelita" RIP Warren " They love Zevon!!!

  • Thanks for posting this---she can blow most women off the stage... (just my opinion)

  • Dwight gets it hands down.....GG gets the runner's up

  • GG version better but this is the original so gotta give her some props no more methadone i know that feeling

  • This is not the original, the original is by Warren Zevon.

  • the original is wrote and performed by warren zevon, check it out

  • i prefer gg allin version

  • basuioy.....HELL YEA!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • I have no idea what that word is! Where are you?

  • I agree on the Flaco Jimenez/Dwight Yoakum version comment. It led me back to Warren Zevon.

  • carmelita seems to be the name god gave angels to help men, my carmelita traveled 1300 miles when she was 16, to find this dum gringo and save his life, thank god, for carmelitas.

  • thank you i don.t know how i forgot!!!@!

  • my sisters and I always sing this...perfect harmony...remember it from when I was young

  • sing it tape it, would love to hear it on u tube

  • welfare as we once knew it, heheh.

  • I say Prisioner in Disguise is her best, but "true" Ronstadt fans heheh, would claim Heart Like a Wheel was her finest.

  • Besides Warren Zevon's original and Miss Linda's cover, you might listen to Dwight Yoakam and Flaco Jimenez doing this one. I might even say Mr. Yoakam's cover is better than the original.

  • Check out GG Allins version. Other than mine, it's the best. The A'hole KNOWS what he's singing about!

  • Loved this song from my childhood. Didn't know of any of the other versions, but having looked at them all, I still have to say this is my fave. Check out Willy Deville's version as well.
