  • remember watching this choke for the first time and and thinking there is always one new trick around the corner. it's the "principal vs. technique " argument all over again. you break it down to the principal, in this case blood flow to the brain, and endless techniques can follow, only imagination limits the fighter. hell i remember watching keith hackney use a ranger/ tiger claw choke on joe son waaaay back in ufc history. great times in mma these days my friends, quantum leaps happening

  • Von Flue has hit variations of this choke in 3 MMA wins! amazing creativity.

  • very nice,... I am planning to watch all your videos

  • You can just turn your neck into it and be able to avoid the choke I believe.

  • @vinnys025 nope bro.. me too tried it.. you can look infront of a mirror.. while you twist your head sideways.. your neck is more exposed.. you can only turn your head away from him.. its impossible to turn your head on his side since his shoulder is blocking your jaw

  • I tried this yesterday and it really helped but it can take alot of effort to keep the right angle in order to maintain the pressure.

The problem was the lack of control over them shifting their legs towards you.

    I'll get it next time.

  • This is one used by Jeremy Horn in Bully Beatdown in season 3 # 2, never heard of it before, thanks for this video

  • Very usefull technique!

  • DUMMY CHOKE!!!!!!!

  • For the love of God, just crush his testicles by squeezing with your hand, fuck the Von Fluey whatever, damn Matt Larsden and gay combatives level 1. Funny how virtually none even use it in the training simulations they have, let alone infantry or street fights against skilled opponents. Judo>Submission Grappling>BJJ.

  • @wiggalama judo better than bjj? loser

  • @josh1212121 Try making an arguement. I offered a realistic alternative to the Von Fluey. The techniques of Judo Newaza are meant to go with striking and striking+grappling(such as a throw often times) to weaken the opponent, then to lock in something such as the ude garami(kimura) or juji gatame(armbar) QUICKLY, not to lolly gag and relie on sport rules, superior conditioning(cause usually they take on shity strikers), or point victories. Damage and speed is what works.

  • @josh1212121 idd bjj is veel beter als judo

  • @MrDutchboy14 speak english, cant understand you

  • @wiggalama that is a pretty gay strategy XD really '' crush his testicles '' , more like sm than fighting ;p

  • @leendert0123 Your not giving him pleasure guy, your attacking a weak point on his body by castrating him. BJJ and submission grappling are the ones that spend minutes on the ground cuddling each other and shit.

  • Everytime i've been in a situiatin like this they have removed there arm from around my neck, is there some way to execute this sub WITHOUT there arm around your neck?

  • I appreciate the usefulness of this in grappling but in MMA if you pass guard (as you said in a previous comment) they should let go. If they let you get that gabble grip position you should easily be able to get to mount and continue the von flue or transition to a Ezekiel. Not trying to bash on the move it has its uses, but i think they're are better options. Position then Submission :). thanks for all the videos they are quiet useful.

  • so is this basically a variation on an arm triangle/head and arm type choke or is it kind of in a league of it's own?

  • I just choked out some karate guy with this choke, he kept using the front kick, so i timed it, took him down, he went for a guillotine, i moved to side control..he still held on to it(face palm) and I used the Von Flu choke! :D

  • Best guillotine defense IMO. Also great if you're a fan of arm triangles like I am.

  • Best guillotine defense IMO. Also great if you're a fan of arm triangles like I am.

  • were can i find mats like that

  • Very good, seems hard to execute on mutliple factors though...

  • also opens up [side control bottom] for an arm triangle,

most people wont tap, but they will let go, the moment they do, drive your head to the floor and the arm triangle is pretty much there for the taking

  • I've had this happen to me, the von flue. It is no joke. It hurts, the only way u can defend it is if u let go of the gullitine.

  • How is that even hurting the other guy?

  • @J90JAM it blocks his breathing from the pressure coming from his shoulder

  • @rutherd313

    Oh yeah!

  • Very easy to defend, unnefective ! The sparring is "glued" on the tatame !

  • EVERYTIME i shoot for a takedown my opponent trie to apply a guillotine.. could i just shoot with my chine down and shoulders up to trick them into throwing it and then use this because i usually get in half guard or side control. usually half guard.. rarely full guard

  • do you need a large bicep to use this technique?

  • @67Sman I doubt it. I`d say your body weight across a persons throat or face would be enough to make them tap. Because it looked like Mr. Ari was on his toes and leaning into the other guys throat.

  • @Motownbrother cewl thanks

  • Excellent Counter!

  • the real name for this is a dummy choke. Von Flue was just the first one to use it in the UFC. Just like the "mir lock" which is a kind of keylock

  • Like everyone said this works mostly on beginners. But I usually just let them waste all their power on it and wait it out.

  • you should grab the right leg with ur left arm and pick him up and go to side control ..alot eisier to make sure u dont get stuch n half guard

  • Very effective choke and easy to learn. One of the more painful chokes I've been put in.

  • It doesn't look like it could be done often, but I've been put in this by both Jason Von Flue and Andrew Von Flue, and even from half gaurd on a couple occasions. If you have skinny enough shoulders, you can do it from full gaurd. I roll with these guys 3 days a week, and I still can't get it just right. but it does take some work to perfect it

  • To see a nice Von FLue in action ..my buddy does one it this fight

    ww.youtube.com/watch?v=WskyRJPzZqk

  • Consider placing your hand that's under his head, palm down in the Gable grip, not palm up.

  • This is a very good choke to use on beginners who wrap your head all the time

  • wish id seen this lat week before training, was in some guys guillotine and had the side control, had to work an escape :/

  • can you do this if your in side control and he doesnt do the guillotine?

  • i find this a bit difficult to pull off

  • i remember seein this in the ufc i was like what the hell did he do? haha

  • love the techniques, very well explained.. keep it up

  • I nactually saw this once in a UFC fight, the bottom guy went to sleep :)

  • 'im curious if there is there any way to do this if you are a smaller person or someone with less then average arm muscle

i have to teach this to a class and any extra info would be amazing

  • @horizontal staying up on the toes+that gable grip helps me.

  • I saw this a few months ago, and decided to practice it. This is my absolute favorite choke so far. I've used it from side mount, half guard, full guard, and it has worked %95 of the time. I'm not a big guy either. I weigh 130 on a great day. Thanks for showing me this.

  • @joshjuba if you are in half or full guard, it helps to rotate your forearm so edge is on their cervical vertebrae, definitely the most painful neck crank i have ever felt, but it's really, really dangerous don't do that if you arent experienced

  • Is there any effective way to get the arm out if he has a arm in guillotine?

  • very legit and painful move, especially good move for a big guy to do, dont need to put as much pressure behind it

  • have you by chance rolled with Eddie Bravo or Joe Rogan?

  • Comment removed

  • You can also get this choke from inside your opponents guard when he sits up to apply the choke. You just reach as far down his back as you can when he sits up, and make a fist(very uncomfortable for him) and then drive your shoulder into his throat. The only downside being if you're not deep enough he might still have the guillotine, and it could be a contest to see who taps first.

  • Really helpful video. Twice I tried to take a guy down and he guillotined both fucking times...

  • ur a true gangster ari. u rly are. thanks man i plan on using that later today to some stupid unsuspecting "uki" that has it comin. death and destruction baby can I get a hell yeah!?!? anyone!?!?

  • Im tired of scrubs always going for the guillotine, thanks for sharing

  • If the guy on the bottmom would release the neck lock or guilllotine attempt and rap his arms underneath, he could drive his shoulder up into the top guy's throat to effectively counter. Notice how you have to post and drive your bicep or shoulder. As rapidly as it comes on from the top, it is even more surprising from the bottom.

  • I call it a shoulder drive. It can be applied as a choke, or if they defend the choke, I call it "Jaw Breaker" or "Lock Jaw". My son owns with this move. He can apply it from the top and the bottom.

  • aw nice, never knew there was a choke like this lols

    tyvm

  • you can also get an arm triangle in the position after the take down

  • cool moves

  • as in "Jason" Von Flue??

  • The part where you sprawl put on your toes, doesn't that make you vulnerable for him to put you into his half or even full guard?

  • how well is this supposed to work? Should it still work if I'm 5'10" and 135 lb, and my opponent is 5'4" and 155lb (looks kinda like Sean Sherk)? Cuz I still get choked out by the heavier dudes even though I have side mount =[. Any tips?

  • i tried this on training last night. it totally worked! thanks!

  • I remember when I first started grappling I would move into something very similar to the von flue from the clinch. It was very effective and consistent, maybe it was bad form, but unconventional chokes are the most fun.

  • Sub 101, these guys are great on submissions.

  • i love submissions 101

  • heard joe rogan talk about this choke on ufc 114 so i had to check it out

  • Thankyou for your reply. just tried searching for the vid you recommended. I cant seem to find it for some reason. I hope you didnt take it as a criticism of the von flue itself. I'm sure that it would make a good addition to the arsenal that one accumulates through endless hours of practice. I just know that when i have been careless enough to find myself in the side mount/control guillotine, it is still very painful and dangerous even from there.

  • @TheIjames The rule of thumb is to let go of the guillotine when someone has cross side position on you. If you type in "Von Flue Choke" you find the video of Jason vs Alex in the UFC. Hope that helps!

  • @Submissions101 Ok.. I got round to having a look at the fight you directed me to. So i have since tried it several times with varied results. One of the guys i train with relies heavily on his strength when being out skilled. This is why i have such problems with this technique. sometimes he lets go before i need to use it and sometimes he doesn't. I have still needed to tap because of the pain he was causing before i could do anything. I keep getting into the guillotine just to practice it.

  • @TheIjames I to see what you are saying but if you can finish the guillotine when your partner or opponet(sp) is in the cross mount, then well and dandy but it is truly a submission use from mount or when they are in your guard or sometimes halfguard. But you should always release the guillotine when your opponet gets into side mount.

  • @Sessyome3 yeah, i'm aware that you should not really hold the head once you have lost position. But against my training partners who still haven't grasped this simple rule 100%, it still isn't the most efficient technique, due to the fact that as you go for position you do for a second, give them space to reclaim a closed guard for their guillotine. Especially when their guillotine is very slick, or they are very powerful and just crank your neck regardless of your having side control/mount.

  • good in theory.. but i don't believe that it is a reliable counter/prevention or submission from that position. Particularly if your opponent is strong, not that he needs to be to hurt you from having you even like that.

  • @TheIjames Hey my friend. Please look up Von Flue vs Karolexsis (watch?v=aPQmH9mFSU0) to see this in action in a real mma fight. Please let me know your thoughts after watching that video ;-)

  • @TheIjames A female instructor accidentally put Ryan Hall to sleep demonstrating the movie. Do you know who Ryan Hall is? Need I say more?

  • @TheIjames Of course it's a good prevention because you'd seek to move your body to the opposite side of the head as a matter of course when caught in a guillotine, regardless of trying any submission. They'd be stupid to keep trying for the guillotine from that position as it's near impossible to finish.

  • @TheIjames The only reason I'm watching this video is because I was choked unconscious by a von flue earlier this evening.

  • @jessexloren Yeah it works well really...

  • @TheIjames The only reason I'm watching this video is because I was choked unconscious by a von flue earlier this evening.

  • i definately could not use this against a stronger opponent. I believe it would be a better idea to break the hold on your neck by using the blade of your forearm against thier throat. not as a strike, just the pressure alone wouldbreak thier hold on you so you coul attempt the mount or perhaps a nth sth?

  • That move is amazing, coming from wrestling thats the biggest problem i've had with BJJ is being guillotined so thank you for that

  • Awesome counter! I gotta remember this one

  • no one ever suspects a mexican to be watching this regular jujitsu stuff. ^_^ im a brazilian jujitsu brown belt, but im impressed with the 10th planet submissions that are like almost supreme grapples. major props to this jujitsu artist!! i suppose he could submit gsp and bj penn from ufc if he lifted his finger! ^_^

  • haha I actually used to be Jason von flue 's student out here at FKA in clovis CA, his cousin uses this technique alot but the grappling game out here is very limited, after seeing it used once I realized its a very risky move to use, but then again who in the right mind would hang on to a guillotine when someone has you in the sidemount

  • chupame la pija colorado¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • mucho tiempo viendo bananero

  • Stupid question: can you do this from normal side control? Then it is at least quite nasty shoulder pressure..?

  • I won a pro mma fight with this choke on Sunday so it does work, sometimes when you shoot a double leg and the guy tries to guilotine you land him in side control and before he let's go of your neck you can trap the arm and start working the choke. It's a great sub and does work if you know how to do it properly. Keep up the good work Submissions 101.

  • video or it didn't happen

  • Lots of people new to grappling tend to hang on to the head for no good reason. Otherwise I haven't seen it much.

  • @shelbydeth I've found this a lot at my gym as well. This one was especially useful for some of the stronger new guys who try to muscle a guillotine in without any thought of technique or position.

  • Apparently, you've never grappled with Judo people. They grab the head like this constantly. I usually just end me moutning them with my head still in their arms, but I will give this a go next time. Thanks for the video.

  • Awesome! This is a great escape to submission move. Thanks guys.

  • I'd never hold a guillotine in side control...

  • Good! Smart move...some people do however and this is why you should not.

  • @Submissions101 Good in theory.. But i don't believe that it is a reliable counter/prevention or submission from that position. Particularly if your opponent is strong, not that he needs to be to hurt you from having you even like that. The take down you show is spot on, but i feel that it would be much more effective once on the floor, to just apply some pressure to their face or neck with the blade of your forearm to help break their grip then either go for a mount or maybe a nth sth attack.

  • @Submissions101 Holding onto a guiltine in any other postion than a half gaurd or a full gaurd is unacceptable too me if anyone does hug me and try to pull me down the first thing i do is try to pop a leg in for a gaurd or a half if that fails i let go if they do get side controll i go for and underhook with my left arm and use my right hand to grip the elbow and try for a half gaurd or i slide me left knee up to help prevent him from passing to mount are those good ideas?

  • @AZrider47 This isn't really intended for people starting out in side position. It's actually supposed to happen during a full on (no arms trapped) guillotine in full guard. There's a special way of posting up and shaking out While choking them. Then go to this part

  • lol a to defend against a gullitone from side control, sheesh not going to come across that very often!

  • thats why they show you how to take them down from standing

  • no my point is. who the hell tries going for a gullitone choke when your on the bottom and have you've been side controlled? seems like a terrible idea to me. in an actual fight this wouldnt work you would just gas your arms.

  • Because not everyone is knowledgeable about martial arts.

  • its more likely they try for a guillotine and you pass their guard to side control to break the guillotine but they don't give it up instantly.

  • people do that shit, guys who aren't very good at jui jitsu will do it almost certainly

  • nice!!

  • Yeah, this is why you always let go of the guillotine once you lose half guard.

  • Subbed

  • Some of these comments make me laugh!! Another quality video keep them coming. Thanks

  • ooh get owned by subs 101 ohforphuqsake

  • I only want to say is: If you have nothing good to say about something, just dont say anything. Live and learn, regarless. Is all good and bad coments doesnt help any body.

  • this is awesome. i will add this to my ground game for sure. Do you know how any videos on escaping it from the guard?

  • if he starts guilotine on ground and is moving to guard, drive ur head down to his hip, bring your hips up as high as possible, and fall to his opposite side hip, controlling the legs with ur arms as u fall (otherwise u could wind up in guard and its over at that point). once u get side control von flue is a great option and he won't be able to finish guillotine.

  • I have no video, and i dont think submissions 101 has one for this, but my personal favorite, is stack them so your like a V over top of them, and put your free fore-accross their throat and push and pull your head away. this works 95% of the time for me because it puts pressure on their neck so they immeiately panic and let go.

  • oops, its a reply @ emaun

  • ohforphuqsake : Are u a professional retard?...Do they pay u to be such a dick? hahaha burnt by subs 101, cool vid guys ;)

  • I saw Von Flue do this choke in one of his fights, the guy didn't even know what hit em.

  • Please let us know what name you know it by. There are many moves in MA that have different names but are the same technique. Its just a name. How does 'mispronouncing a name" related to how BJJ will never be superior. That logic simply does not follow. I realize your post is just a trolling attempt to get a rise out of people. Its cool. I see jokers like this all the time. There was never a claim in this video that BJJ was the best. Do what makes you happy...if you can indeed do that.

  • @Submissions101 burn! lol, you guys are awesome

  • HAHAH DAMn, Submissios 101 for the win! That dude got fried!!

  • @Submissions101 I love that the name caught on as the Von Flume choke. I loved the Alex Karalexis fight when out of nowhere Von Flume puts him to sleep.

  • @JensPulverFan lol sorry Von Flue*

  • You say "fuck the Gracies" but what have YOU done for the martial arts world? Sweet fuck all, you non-contributing arrogant dick.

  • @jedicelt say it brother!

  • @jedicelt Lol. I used to train under Cesar Gracie... and I believe that these guys (submissions101) are adding a decent flowchart and set of counters and combos for the no-gi submissions guy. I still think that a solid GJJ-stylist, who dedicates himself to learning the gi-less takedown game... is much better prepared than these guys, who load up their arsenal so fast. There's nothing better than perfect basics. I think that these guys have a lot to offer as a library of sorts.

  • @jedicelt Whoever said "Fuck the Gracies" is a basement-dwelling fat-ass who thinks he's training for UFC by shadow-boxing in his mom's basement.

  • say that infront of ricson gracie or one of them

  • @kiddhitta NIce, way to represent the Gracies I am sure they would be proud of you being disrespectful to anyone who has a different style.

  • how is that disrespectful

  • @kiddhitta I apologize I believe I misread the statement.

  • thank you. i was complimenting the gracies.

  • wow

  • man this channel rules..

  • there is a counter for every move so dont say well what if he does this what if he does that. Thats the point you have to know the counters and if you do thats great thats the point of getting good at jiu jitsu.

  • what the hell

    thats great

    i havnt learned this yet

  • Wow...what if they guy...um...turns his head away from you?

lilsmartrat3: the arm triangle (as all triangles) are defined by circumferential restriction of the neck performed by the attackers 2 limbs and the submitters 1 limb in a triangular fashion. This is none of those.

  • this is not a triangle based choke, it looks like it but its not. you dont even haveto lock your arms, its just better defense to do so. You just have to have the blade of your shoulder in his neck and bridge so your upper body weight is focussed on your shoulderblade its more of a pressure choke.

  • You can do this if they pull guard as well, by looking towards their body to take the pressure off and standing upright but sprawled, with all of your weight on your choking-shoulder.

  • Isn't this prety much just an inverted arm triangle???

Someone correct me if im wrong

  • I may be wrong, but i think the difference is that with an arm triangle, you are using carotid control, cutting off the blood flow to the brain, whereas this choke is cutting off air. It's also a lot more painful than a carotid choke.

  • sweet move this choke great video guys

  • I remember that! It was a third round submission. Alex wanted to tap, but when he tried his arm went limp!

  • Does the guy have to be trying a guillotine for this to work or can you use it in side control even though he's not going for the choke?

  • I think the key behind the guillotine is that when your hugging and taking your opponent to the ground your arm is already behind his neck and you're in side control, giving the opportune time for the von flue choke.

  • I learned this yesterday in class. Works very well.

  • Is there a counter for the Von Flue Choke?

I like to use the guillotine choke alot when grabbling against my friends when training,

so i would like to know if there is a way to defend or get out of it.

  • yes...just let go of the guillotine and pull your hands in.

  • Could someone explain what body part is pressured or targeted; forcing the opponent to tap?

Ari lists pressing the chest, but I don't quite understand.

  • the bicep gets off one of the arteries, while his shoulder pressed against the other artery, cutting off blood!

  • Was this named after Jason Von Flue?

  • yep

  • Yep, I think he choked out Alex Karolexis with it. I think that's where I saw it, first.

  • correct.

  • Great Video, I like the good verbal description. I am going to try to incorporate this technique into my arsenal of grappling techniques. I think this will be very useful to me because I am often forced to defend against a guillotine choke. Thanks for posting this video!!

  • I tried this and could not get my shoulder under his neck :(

  • I seen this two or three years ago in the UFC. He baited the opponent to get him in a guillotine.

  • sweet do you happen to remember which ufc it was or who won the fight? i have all the ufc's and would like to go back and find it to watch it in a mma situation thats all. thanks for any info!

  • meisha tate did it from half guard

  • Got this to work last night rolling, thanks to you guys. Guy was new though so didn't see it comming.

This choke can still be applied even if they let go of there guillotine lock from side control right?

  • This is gonna wreck days next time i spar thanks submissions 101

  • You know your a Bad Ass when they name submissions after you. Joe Rogan was like "It's not gonna work. He needs to get the arm in". Then you see Jason signal to the ref that Alex was sleeping.

  • go! von flue!

  • Wait, is it "rapid" or "not very quick"?

  • he said gradually not rapid

  • hah this is great a guy i spar with loves to go for the guillotine
