This was a charter flight for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Finnair doesn't fly to YVR regularly.

@uscgswimmer1, Finnair now flies 747-400 codeshared Finnair 5996 with Iberia 7612 and AA 6218, arriving YVR 1.40 pm and departing terminal M for Heathrow 8.30 pm = 9h 10m flight. I noticed it listed on the YVR Departures boards yesterday. I haven't seen the plane yet but I gather it is Finnair colours. (This current Jan 2012.)

@Grroocx Finnair does not own any Boeing 747 and is not planning to get them. Its just codeshare flight but certainly not Finnair crew or aircraft. Currently biggest airplanes Finnair has are A340-300 and A330-300, in future they will get A350´s but no 747s.

They have made heavy charters to YVR before too, been one of those.

The MD-11 is the best-looking aircraft ever. Period. Those massive windows.. the winglets.. and the tail-mounted engines. She looks symmetrical.

The L-1011 is a close second.

@fighter742 Cause it's a BITCH to land! Poorly designed. It can be looked up on Google. CG is very far Aft making the controls light and not super responsive. A major reason Finnair is now flying A340's and A330's around.

@my235 The main reason why Finnair retired it's MD-11 fleet is that A330 burns less fuel. That decision had nothing to do with the MD-11 controls.

@Finnavia Of coarse it had to do with fuel burn. But... The fact remains, the MD-11 is a inherently unstable aircraft.

@my235 I know the MD-11 is more challenging to land than other commercial aircrafts due to small horizontal stabilizer and far CG. But... I think no airline would fly the MD-11 if it was unstable. E.g. Finnair operated the MD-11 safely for about 20 years and still does as freighter.

Love how the MD-11's do that signature "bounce" on landing. Sad to see only KLM fly them now on regular scheduled passenger service (Biman still flies the older DC-10's).

I would say the MD-11 is one of the greatest commercial jets ever built. So sad they are no longer in Finnair colors.. :(
