When mine was removed a few days after bypass surgery it took four people to hold me down. I was delerious with pain. I'd swear the balloon was still inflated. And I was well sedated for the procedure. They said I wouldn't remember a thing, but I remember the extraction and the impolite comments by the nurses. You're not supposed to remember that though. I won't do it again if I can help it.
Yes, there is only pain if you TENSE up. You need to relax bu breathing in and out deeply instead of tensing up. I have to do this for my husband. Only discomfort, but no pain!
I told my Dr and my nurse " if I come out of surgery with ones of these I was gonna fuck the whole place up " needless to say I did not have one when I woke up.
It looks simple enough, but this was done to me after surgery. Thank God I was out like a light when this was done.
It was explained to me by a nurse that if I was squeamish about removal of said catheter, it would only be horrible if they had to re-insert. Quite painful I was assured! I believed the nurse, and did my best to pee on my own terms. Yuck!
there is nothing to that, i cath myself 3 times a day. it doesn't hurt at all. you just have to have the right size so it doesn't hurt when you are getting a catheter inserted.

By the way, catheter removal HURTS! It really does. This is contrary to what my nurse told me.
If you can avoid this procedure, BY ALL MEANS DO SO.
