I don't think gollum realized yet they were taking ring to be destroyed, even if frodo hadn't tricked him, it probably wouldn't have made a difference once he learned about their intentions for it.

markofthespartan..when smeagol saw sam and frodo sleeping, in the book, something stirred in his memory..of deagol, is my guess..and he felt very moved. moved to the point of compassion. jrr himself said things would have been dif. had sam not woken up and freaked out, calling him sneak. which snapped smeagol back into gollum mode, out of hurt..then he didn't care, because of sam being cruel. he was vulnerable at the time, still under the rings will, so.. :/

in reply to my own comment: i believe sam & frodo had a very dif. relationship than smeagol and deagol, however. i think it was more the symbolism that struck his heart, because he gave up his dearest thing for what promised to become his dearest thing. he betrayed deagol only to be betrayed by the ring, really..
