I'm pretty up on this era and I hadn't really heard of it except for the fact that growing up, my brothers and I had some random view master discs, and this show was one of them, they have out of print on them.
In the past when tv shows were running from film, the networks would have the HQ 35mm copy on the air, and at the same time, they would have a 16mm copy (with all the commercials included) running in synch from a different location. This clip is from an NBC 16mm backup copy. That is one reason the colors are washed out. Another is that it is a multigenerational video copy.
I LOVED this show as a kid! Tony Franciosa was my favorite of the three. Sad that they've all passed on except Hugh O'Brien. You must live on the West Coast as that was the show's timeslot here back then. It was WAY past my bedtime then, but I had to have my dose of "Search"! You just earned yourself a new subscriber,my friend. Thanks for posting!
@MorganScorpion . That's funny, me too. I knew Burgess Meredith from the old BATMAN series, but I became a fan when I saw him on SEARCH/PROBE. So much so, I had a hard time when he did ROCKY -- all I could see was Cameron slumming in a dirty gym.
I think in this case Soujurn, it's the condition of the print stock, that's held back the DVDs. Some of the Kodak film used back then, turned red after a few decades. I got a reel of he NY World's Fair (1965) that's has no color but red now. And I've seen some single frames of Search footage that was all red. So besides the pilot (that got syndicated) episode, the rest need serious restoration from negative stock. If it still exists.
Great post, thanks for uploading! I always loved the theme song from this show, and if you search hard enough, it's available on the 'Net in stereo!!! I'm lucky enough to have about a dozen of these Search shows on tape!!!!
I loved this theme when I was a teener. Thanks at my age now, I am able to watch it again especially those episodes I missed because I have to study as a child. Now I can watch whenever I want. Brings back memories-Royena
Too bad Leslie Stevens got the sack on this show...that move probably robbed us fans of Frontiere from exciting music [since Frontiere had a work history with Stevens - i.e. "The Outer Limits"]....
Theme by Dominic Frontiere who was head of music at Paramount. (And this was a Warner Bros series) Throughout the series music from The Immortal (Christopher George ,Paramount Television) was heard. I guess since the Immortal was only on for one season,Mr. Frontiere reused it here...
Yep, because Dominic Frontiere was also the man that also gave us the 1st music jingle to the 1969-75 version of the Paramount Television logo, called by some as "The Closet Killer."
And incidentally, he also was the guy that composed the 1972 Warner Bros. Television logo jingle as well.
Wouldn't you think, with things the way the are vis-a-vis the economy, TW wouldn't place such arbitrary restrictions on releases of older programs. What are they protecting? It makes no sense.
It is usually the estates of series cast members who want too much money that holds up the release of old shows onto DVD. Sometimes it is the music for which they cannot get clearance that holds things up. But sometimes it is a network or production company like Universal for example, that holds backs.
Wow! The prints are a real mess. Not just "red shifted", but also just plain worn out. No way they'll ever make DVDs from these. They'll have to go back to the negative stock (if they have it) and work from there. If never a DVD set, maybe it get syndicated on some of the new digital Tv channels.
@marknulty - There use to be a website devoted to this series (sadly gone). It had scripts, wavs and mp3s of the series theme. And lots of digitized 35MM frames of reel footage. All turned to red. At 1st I though it was only the lighting in Probe control. But no, all scenes gone red. So they'd have to go back to the negative reels, to recover the colors. Assuming those survived. Special software might be able to extrapolate colors from the ruined stock. But I doubt it exists.
That was a neat idea for a series having rotating actors taking turns in the lead each week. Tony Franciosa and Doug McClure were the most likable of the 3.

To fans of the TV series "SEARCH"-please go to Warner Archives, and petition
them to release this series on their MOD/DVDs,,as the studio is already starting
to make some of it's TV series and TV Films availible through it's WB Shop on

Indeed it was a great show, and ahead of its time regarding the technologies used, much of which we take for granted today.
I especially remember that theme to the opening credits, one of the best ever.

I'm sure you're right..he had a great talent for rewoking his own musical motifs, as
I am discovering watching "12 O'Clock High" episodes on the American Life
network...
