@slashrays The video shows how it sounds with clean settings, think that covers it. Fralins handle gain pretty well. Amazing tone with transparent drives like OCD and TS, really good with fuzzes.
@slashrays I don't think this kind of "magic pickup" even exists, dude... it's vintage single coil kinda tone. Some styles will need humbucker tone, higher output, etc - you can't have it on a strat with single coils. Just like you'll never get this tone playin' an Ibanez with DiMarzios. You gotta know what you want to get what you need.
Thx. for the response bro. I have a strat with pretty weak pickups and I'm wondering if the Fralins will allow me to pick without having to "hammer" the strings. When I mentioned "sustain", I was wondering if the signal decays quickly......definitely not looking for infinite sustain. What do you think?
@AskAGuitarPro Hi man! Surely the fralins set doesn't have this kind of weak response. The signal won't decay quickly... it's a full and warm kind of tone, surely you won't have to spank your guitar!
@AskAGuitarPro Thank you, man!!! IMHO, the Fralins have waaay better response to picking nuances (like hybrid picking, etc) than every single pickup I've tested. About sustain: the Fralins are really good, nothing to complain - but it goes for that "vintage" kind of tone, with low/medium output. They're not "infinite sustain" kind of pickups, you know. Comparing with other low output pickups, I'll say they're pretty good.
Ash Body's are great+Fralins and no pedals=a fantastic clean sound. you would never be wasting your money upgrading to any of his pickups. They are all replaceable until you get the right one and Lindy wants nothing more than your satisfaction with your purchase

on my usa strat deluxe 2007 with an ash body I exchanged de SCN pups for CS'69 and the guitar still sounds glassy, way more natural then with the SCN but not like I expected from listening to YOUTUBE, n ow I wonder, should I echchange the pot meters? or is it the ashe body that make the guitar sound thin? the lindy fralin pups on your guitar sound warmer fuller but I am in doubt to spend money on pups if the guitars' wood is so determining
@sjaakuitjulianadorp There are some things to consider before another pickup change. The Fender CS '69 is a great set, you should be just fine with them. I do think you should test some other things... for example, the 0.11 gauge strings are a big part of my tone.
I just don't understand how 6 people could dislike this. Great tone & he plays like a man. Probably some stupid shredders playing an Ibanez through a line 6. I've got the Blues Specials in my 70's ash strat into a Louis Electric KR-12 & they sound great. They just seem to pick up the little nuances like hybrid picking better than the mass produced pickups out there. You sound like you're playing with 6L6's... I've got EL-34's so my tone is a little darker than yours.
Yep, 6L6 here on this video... it's a fender hot rod deluxe. I've got a Peavey Classic30 (EL-84's) - a little darker tone too, but still very good with the Fralins.
my buddy has had pickups in and out of his strat until he put these in and it really turns out the great strat sound that everybody thinks about and loves. i have fralin blues specials in my telecaster i built and it sounds amazing. nice video man i can dig that
Hey, how can i get rid of annoying hum in my lindy fralin pickups? i have the same ones, but in 60's road worn strat and they hum and sound a little thin.. even with distortion.. is it the quality of guitar? or my amp/pedals? cause i use a blackstar ht-20 and a badmonkey (i know, neither are top of the line quality, but still)
Hi, dude! Does the hum cancel completely at positions 2 and 4?
You can check out your electric wiring, there can be something wrong with it. You can also cover all the cavities and the back of the pickguard with copper foill. Then wiire that foil to the grounding point (usually the back of the volume pot). This should help a lot.
@msns1978 Yeah, it literally cancels out completely at 2 and 4, but the tone still lacks to what i'd expect.. like i said, it just sounds thin.. and.. shit. it's hard to explain without hearing it, but would the 7.5 neck radius have anything to do with it? or do i need to upgrade my setup?
I don't think the neck radius has anything to do with your thin tone issue. Try changing your pickups height, maybe getting them closer to the strings.
I think your setup is OK, like you said it ain't "top of the line" stuff, but you should get pretty decent tone without upgrading it.
@msns1978 Well i got them profesionally installed and my guitar set up, so they're fairly close as it is, but ill play around with it and see if i notice any difference :)

should i buy maple or rosewood neck fender for fatter tone? .. i'm gonna buy squier vibe 50' or 60' strat and upgrade with lindy fralin blues special.. 50's are maple neck and 60's are rosewood neck.. please tell your opinion
Hi, dude! Maple will give you more bright, and rosewood will give you more mellow tone - that's up to your taste. My opinion: try to actually play both guitars before buying, and choose the one you like most!
@msns1978 - If you are going for a blues tones you may lean toward the rosewood but it mostly depends on you....I have a host of strats and love them all :)
@msns1978 - I'll second that...have had all of them...Fralins are consistently the best choice for most Strats. I even have their humbuckers on my Les Pauls now and love them as well.
That's a great sound you have.....I just upgraded my '93 Am Std Sunburst Strat to the same pickguard as yours and SCN's (no Fralin dealers where I am!) but I gotta say I am digging your sound there!!! I may swtich the SCN's over to my Hwy one and pop the Fralins in my Am Std! There is a nice twang to them pickups....how do they handle gain?
Thanks for the nice comment! They handle gain pretty well! They sound fantastic with transparent drives like the TS, OCD and stuff. They're pretty OK around fuzzes too.
@msns1978 - Fralins can best be described as have a complexity, nuance and dimension that others seem to lack. Occassionally you will run across true vintage pickups that have this but then again many of them don't hold up to the Fralins which are in my opinion the most detailed for that vintage sound..
can't beat Lindy Fralin....bout to put some blues specials in my 50's Tele....and after hearing this, I'll probably be gettin' some for the ole strat too.... ;o)
I think he does this kind of stuff... you can order how much overwind the pickup will be, so you can order normal for neck and middle (vintage hot configuration) and ask for 5% overwound just on on the bridge pickup (blues special).
Just went to Lindy's shop in richmond today and dropped off my dad's 1960 vintage strat...he's rewinding the neck pickup in kind of a blues special formation. Lindy is a pretty cool guy and the pick ups speak for themselves.
No, you "lose" one of the tone pots: you get just one "overall" tone pot, and the other tone pot becomes the blender. You can get the schematics at lindy fralin's website.
@msns1978 ahhh thank you so one of the tone control becomes the master for all the tone for the pickups and the other tone pot giving you the ability to blend thats cool hope the people at the guitar shop can figure out how to do it haha
The EQ here on this video is almost flat, with just a little more bass. There are so many things that influence your tone... strings gauge (you just can't get nice blues tone with 0.09 strings for example, IMHO), the guitar itself, pickups, your amp, etc. and etc.

@msns1978 Don't worry. It's not your English, it's the other guy's. His question made no sense at all.
Great demo, though. Wonderful playing. Did you have these pickups custom wound or the factory standard +5% overwind? In other words, aren these a special order/request or are they just the "normal" blues specials from Fralin?
you have sexy sounding guitar man! Plus, youre fucking amazing at playin the blues! I have 4 grand invested in guitars & amps (Marshall, randall, ibanez, gibson, jackson).....for a long time i've been playin metal. I woke up one mornin an decided to play the blues. None of my guitars offer your sort of sound so do you think i should get a telecaster or strat?
Thank you so much, pal! Yep, strats and teles are amazing for bluesy sounds. But you're sayin' you got a gibson... you should be more than fine playin the blues with les pauls and stuff! Go for it, dude!
i play through a hot rod deluxe too, my favorite amp ever!! so buttery with sparkling cleans. i think i might switch to these blues fralin p'ups, im kinda tired of the vintage noiseless
I really like the Hot Rod Deluxe too, great amp. I own a Deluxe Reverb '65 RI and a Peavey Classic 30, both amazing amps too.
I didn't like the vintage noiseless when I played them. Kind of lacks soul to me. Listen to SRV's version of "Little Wing" with good headphones: you car hear lots of hum... and that's pure magic! The real thing, for sure...
You went from a MIA strat pickup set to lindy fralins. Did you see a big difference in sound? I'm considering buying them also but I'm worried that the change in sound wont be much or that I'll barely even be able to tell. I'm by no means as good as you. I would say i'm about an intermediate guitarist, so that gives you an idea of my ear for tone I suppose.
Hi dude! Thanks for the nice comment, and I'm not that good!
My original set was Lace Sensors red, silver and blue, that came with the guitar. They are nowhere near any traditional singles - like the fralins - and the final result was: HUGE difference. Kind of even my wife could notice it... lol
But I do think you can surely tell the difference between a set of fralins and a set of standard fender pickups.
That's what I wanted to hear ha! See I'm searching for an xmas gift my parents can get me (or bday, dec 7th heh). It's down to Fralins, a tube screamer or a new body (my stock one has a ton of holes in the neck pocket... 17, wtf guitar center techs grr). I'm leaning towards the pickups. I hear so many good things about them and they sound great!
I think the Fralins would do a little better. But if you want to achieve Gilmour tone, you should consider getting the EMG DG 20 set, with the EXG and the SPC controls...
i kinda want the black strat osund... Live in Gdasnk...
i love to solo on te neck pickups with strong attack and a lot of bendings.. how the fralin react to these.. do you think they do better than the CS69?
I think Fralins would sound better for that more "vintage" tone. The CS69 is a great set too... both will do the work. I suggest listening to acmeguitarworks sound samples. That's a great test. Search for "strat pickup sound clips".
How's the blender mod work? And is it activated by a switch or just always on? I'm very interested in these pick ups for a G&L. By the way, awesome playing you sound great man!
You can get the blender schem on Lindy Fralin's website. It works on the second tone pot, no switches. With the knob at "10" you get the standard strat sounds. You simply turn it to "0" and it brings in the neck pickup. For example, you are on position 4 (bridge + middle): turn the tone knob to "0", you get all three pickups working. You can also get some nice tones with the "in between" points.
I'm completely satisfied with the Fralin's set. I've read lots of Rocketfire positive reviews, they surely sound great, but I've never had the chance to really play with them... I can say that fralins are an excellent choice though. And thanks for the comment!
I totally agree with you! 99% of the people don't even know if that thing you're playing is a guitar or a bass... but anyway, thanks for the comment! Always nice when people that know what they're saying leave comments like this.
The blender is a must for me, I get such nice tones with it... couldn't live without it!
Just the guitar into the HRD's clean channel... the EQ was almost flat, added a little reverb for the ambience. Sound was captured by the camera. The fralins are an excellent choice, I'm very happy with them.
hey, thanks for posting this. i've got an ash body strat that's super bright. you can tell even when you strum it acoustically. these sound great in your guitar though, so it gives me hope :)
Fralins are extremely well-balanced. Consider getting them with the bridge pickup bass plate, it reduces this excessive brightness very well. Good luck, and thanks for commenting!
yea my bad let me rephrase the question how is it on clean songs and with distortion

@slashrays The video shows how it sounds with clean settings, think that covers it. Fralins handle gain pretty well. Amazing tone with transparent drives like OCD and TS, really good with fuzzes.

Hi, thx for great demo! Nice blues playing. I't thinking of replacing my Tex-Mex pups for Fralins too.
archidamos 2 years ago
Thank you so much, dude! Fralins are such a great upgrade, you won't regret replacing your pups...
msns1978 2 years ago
you have sexy sounding guitar man! Plus, youre fucking amazing at playin the blues! I have 4 grand invested in guitars & amps (Marshall, randall, ibanez, gibson, jackson).....for a long time i've been playin metal. I woke up one mornin an decided to play the blues. None of my guitars offer your sort of sound so do you think i should get a telecaster or strat?
bigsexy90210 2 years ago
Thank you so much, pal! Yep, strats and teles are amazing for bluesy sounds. But you're sayin' you got a gibson... you should be more than fine playin the blues with les pauls and stuff! Go for it, dude!
msns1978 2 years ago
@bigsexy90210 everyone should have a strat and tele!!!! :)
jammers5 1 year ago
Can you play anything more like Red Hot Chili Peppers (Frusciante's distorted solos)?
zaeel 2 years ago
I'll see what I can do... as soon as I can! I'll let you know when I post it here, OK?
msns1978 2 years ago
yah cool thanks i am thinking of getting it at guitar center.
MegaWill98 2 years ago
can that guitar do rock?
MegaWill98 2 years ago
What do you call "rock"? That's a really wide range of stuff. She can do Hendrix beautifully, for example... is that rock enough to you? ;)
msns1978 2 years ago
i play through a hot rod deluxe too, my favorite amp ever!! so buttery with sparkling cleans. i think i might switch to these blues fralin p'ups, im kinda tired of the vintage noiseless
bluesbrotha420 2 years ago
I really like the Hot Rod Deluxe too, great amp. I own a Deluxe Reverb '65 RI and a Peavey Classic 30, both amazing amps too.
I didn't like the vintage noiseless when I played them. Kind of lacks soul to me. Listen to SRV's version of "Little Wing" with good headphones: you car hear lots of hum... and that's pure magic! The real thing, for sure...
msns1978 2 years ago
You went from a MIA strat pickup set to lindy fralins. Did you see a big difference in sound? I'm considering buying them also but I'm worried that the change in sound wont be much or that I'll barely even be able to tell. I'm by no means as good as you. I would say i'm about an intermediate guitarist, so that gives you an idea of my ear for tone I suppose.
PatrickIsLost 2 years ago
Hi dude! Thanks for the nice comment, and I'm not that good!
My original set was Lace Sensors red, silver and blue, that came with the guitar. They are nowhere near any traditional singles - like the fralins - and the final result was: HUGE difference. Kind of even my wife could notice it... lol
But I do think you can surely tell the difference between a set of fralins and a set of standard fender pickups.
msns1978 2 years ago
That's what I wanted to hear ha! See I'm searching for an xmas gift my parents can get me (or bday, dec 7th heh). It's down to Fralins, a tube screamer or a new body (my stock one has a ton of holes in the neck pocket... 17, wtf guitar center techs grr). I'm leaning towards the pickups. I hear so many good things about them and they sound great!
PatrickIsLost 2 years ago
Hi:I have an American strat hardtail 96 and I installed a Fralin vintage hot set and I can hear the positive change, my guitar now has soul.
mastermetx 1 year ago
Nice, dude! There's nothing you can do with a guitar without soul...
msns1978 1 year ago
Great playin, dig the set. Still cant decide between these and lipstick tubes... Thanks fr the review! wwSRVd?
SpiteJay 2 years ago
Thanks, dude! If you're looking for SRV tone, the fralins do get really close to that.
msns1978 2 years ago
Sounds great.... cool john mayer look too
8BaPtAsTiC5 2 years ago
Thanks, dude!!!
I like John Mayer, but this look goes way before he was even born...
msns1978 2 years ago
what are your settings for the sounds?
mikeman9412 2 years ago
Guitar plugged straight into the amp (fender hot rod deluxe), EQ almost flat. Sound was captured by the camera.
msns1978 2 years ago
really sweet tone

I just got the 8k/9k set and they are fantastic. I highly suggest everyone to get them
minibikedude04 2 years ago
Awesome, dude! Enjoy your new pickups!
msns1978 2 years ago
Nice vid, nice tone on the pickups.
Lol the very first chord sounded so much like **All I have to do is dream**
Sweet vid though

I just ordered the 8k / 9k set for my memphis lawsuit les paul knock off. have u used these before?
minibikedude04 2 years ago
Haven't used Fralin's humbuckers yet... but they will surely sound good.
msns1978 2 years ago
i agree, its not like they will forget how to make pickups for that pickup
iceman10129 2 years ago
how do you set your hot rod for these pickups... are they to middy,,??
im between these the Fende Cs69 or the Fender Cs Fat50???
wich one...?
topicrass 2 years ago
I don't think they're too midrangy. The setting is always different, according to the place I'm playing at... on this video, the EQ is almost flat.
I like the CS69, they sound very well with fuzzes, they nail that Hendrix tone. But I prefer the Fralins. Just my opinion!
msns1978 2 years ago
you think the Fralins will have better gilmour Tone thatn the custom shop 69?..
topicrass 2 years ago
I think the Fralins would do a little better. But if you want to achieve Gilmour tone, you should consider getting the EMG DG 20 set, with the EXG and the SPC controls...
msns1978 2 years ago
but that set is only for PULSe tone..
i kinda want the black strat osund... Live in Gdasnk...
i love to solo on te neck pickups with strong attack and a lot of bendings.. how the fralin react to these.. do you think they do better than the CS69?
topicrass 2 years ago
I think Fralins would sound better for that more "vintage" tone. The CS69 is a great set too... both will do the work. I suggest listening to acmeguitarworks sound samples. That's a great test. Search for "strat pickup sound clips".
msns1978 2 years ago
great tone ! no pedals ? How do the Fralins sound with distortion ?
orbitration 2 years ago 3
Thanks, dude!
No, only guitar + amp on this video.
They sound really, really good with transparent drives like the TS, OCD and stuff. They're amazing with fuzzes too.

How's the blender mod work? And is it activated by a switch or just always on? I'm very interested in these pick ups for a G&L. By the way, awesome playing you sound great man!
tcliff7 2 years ago 2
Thank you, dude!
You can also get some nice tones with the "in between" points.
msns1978 2 years ago
Man I've been looking at new pickups for my strat, right now it's between Fralins or a Rocketfire set. Fralins definitely sound awesome though.
aznbballstar155 2 years ago
I'm completely satisfied with the Fralin's set. I've read lots of Rocketfire positive reviews, they surely sound great, but I've never had the chance to really play with them... I can say that fralins are an excellent choice though. And thanks for the comment!

I totally dig the rich harmonics in your playing. If only non-guitarists gave a crap. all sounds great, and good choice w/ the blender mod.
ringingnote 2 years ago
I totally agree with you! 99% of the people don't even know if that thing you're playing is a guitar or a bass... but anyway, thanks for the comment! Always nice when people that know what they're saying leave comments like this.
The blender is a must for me, I get such nice tones with it... couldn't live without it!
msns1978 2 years ago
What settings are you running? I'm really interested in buying these pickups...
SirAshmannOfTheShire 2 years ago
Just the guitar into the HRD's clean channel... the EQ was almost flat, added a little reverb for the ambience. Sound was captured by the camera. The fralins are an excellent choice, I'm very happy with them.

Fralins are a real good choice. Thanks for commenting!
msns1978 2 years ago
hey, thanks for posting this. i've got an ash body strat that's super bright. you can tell even when you strum it acoustically. these sound great in your guitar though, so it gives me hope :)
worshipgzs 2 years ago
Fralins are extremely well-balanced. Consider getting them with the bridge pickup bass plate, it reduces this excessive brightness very well. Good luck, and thanks for commenting!

Great lick at 2.03-2.11
Where is it from?
Or have you made it yourself?
Klepaadej 3 years ago
It's from a Steve Trovato instructional video... can't remember the name of it. Gotta love this lick, Steve's just great!
msns1978 3 years ago
These could well be my next pickups. I use the Texas Specials just now, but find them a bit bright. The Fralin's are more bluesy sounding.
Cool playing man!
GeoStratocaster 3 years ago
I agree with you, the Texas Specials are a bit too hot for me. And thank you for the comment!
