I hate Autoplay as it starts the next video while I am typing a comment... I have accidently put the wrong comment on the second (autoplayed video). If I am interacting with the page still then then I want to be left alone. Good Video response. :-)
An old pal's wife is a graphics designer by trade. I recently had to go over there and straighten out a network problem they were having, and she mentioned that she wants to redo her commercial web site. I was shocked to find the whole thing was done in Flash, complete with movies and noises. Oy! No wonder she wants a fresh site!
Sometimes those distractions, as you say, are the information that the site owner wants you to see or hear. I understand your point, but it's almost like you're criticizing those guys with the wheels that continue to spin after they stop their pimp-mobiles. ;]
Heh. Hey, I think those are a distraction, also, but I'm just Some Old Fart. They fall into the same category as those dumb air fresheners that hang from the rear view mirror, always swinging around right in your peripheral vision. After enough time your eye learns to ignore motion from that sector of your driving vision, so when a kid runs out from the sidewalk chasing a ball you don't see him. You do, however, hear the crunch.
I fully agree! I love the idea of featuring a video, but autoplay is indeed a distraction.
It's amazing that they turned on that feature without a way of disabling it short of removing the featured video. In addition to annoying everyone, it's going to use up tons of unnecessary bandwidth!
Joined yer group, by the way. Maybe if enough people tell YT how much their New! IMPROVED!! features smack then they'll change 'em. I'm not holding my breath.
You need to get the Flashblock add-on. Go to Tools | Addons and search the Mozilla addon site for Flashblock, Cookiesafe, and Noscript, the three indispensable addons for any version of Firefox.
Speaking of which, stay with 2 versus 3. So far I don't like the new, "improved" behavior.
I can't begin to tell you how many crappy sites I have abandoned because the presentation drove me away screaming. The first time I saw the Best Buy site (before a major facelift) I thought my eyes were going to hemorrhage. It is incredible that in the 21st Century there are still sites out there trying to sell you stuff, yet they require that you have cookies, Jabbascrapped, Flush, Quicklime, and all kindsa other kaka installed before you can do simple navigation. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
I think I've developed Attention Deficit Disorder after being connected to the internet for 10 years. Either that, or I have a hormonal imbalance. My tolerance level toward distractions is minimal ;-)
Glad you find it to be so. I'd like to pretend that I can analyze stuff like this dispassionately and present cogent arguments one way or another. The ability to present my findings in this manner helps me sway clients. Sometimes.
I agree. You've described exactly why I finally had enough of MySpace. Had never really thought about it in regards to YouTube until this discussion began. I suppose this site hasn't ventured as far down that same path (and hopefully it won't).
Thanks, Marty! Always enjoy getting your sound and reasonable approach.
Autoplay with no opt-out is BAD.
But I found a part-fix.
On Firefox I installed Greasemonkey and then I installed the userscript titled:YouTube Auto Buffer & Auto HD & Remove Ads
This worked! It lets me configure autobuffer too. But I would like YouTube to just give us the options without having to resort to scripting.

@youtubesneak Just using Flashblock or NoScript with the Flash options set the right way will kill the problem.

Hey, at least you have control over it when you use Firefox. Heh.

I'm not a fan of autoplay either! And I absolutely despise music that blasts on webpages! That alone will make me leave ANY webpage...LOL

I agree with you Marty.

Well, the need for this whole thing is pretty much gone now, but the analysis is still valid, methinks.

click the pause button...just like I did for your video. Sheesh...

That's really not the point, y'know? Why make the user go through additional operations that he didn't ask for in the first place?

Well, yeah, but that kinda kills the patient with the successful operation, don't it?

Thank you. I was not all that impressed with my own performance, such as it was. Hmm. Need to reevaluate.

How do you turn it off in Firefox? Cool, beans...

Racer and his brother Swiffer are doing fine. They just turned a year old on May 4th. I think I may have a couple short clips of them to share.

And a great opinion it is! Completely agree, Marty. I knew I could rely on you to tell it like it is. Curt, said it, "sound and resonable."
