There's a huge difference between you creating your "rubbish" songs as you put it and a serious independent musician who hones his craft for years and then drops $50,000 on a proper recording and then probably even more than that on promotion. Good producers and sound engineers and proper studios aren't cheap. Neither are good publicist and booking agents. It's not the big record companies that suffer. It's the serious independent artists.

That being said, SOPA is not a solution at all.

My biggest problem with music is that it is expensive to buy CD's now for major labels. An example, I bought Jessie J's CD "Who You Are" late, like 5 or so months after it came out. Now I would have to shell out a bit more than what I even paid for, for the first CD to get the Platinum Edition to get "Domino." As much as I love that song. I'm going to itunes. :P It really has become about money. I buy only really special CD's or DVD's then download the rest. :/ Except TV series, I buy in-store.

I listen to pretty much all indie music. I've gotten so many CDs from the public library, because it's free, and the librarians 1) cannot prove you're illegally downloading music, and 2) know you do it but don't care. I like being able to support very small-scale bands, so by buying on iTunes the music my library doesn't have, I assume those are the bands/artists that would not be making as much money anyway, since the library doesn't have their CDs. Does that make any sense? Heh

For me, it's not just about music. I run a website, which is about conservation of endangered species. If SOPA and PIPA are enforced, my website could legally be shut down even if I didn't break Copyright law, but I linked to a website which does. Also, in order for me to run the website for free, there are adverts at the sides which I can't control, so if they break the law, I'd be breaking the law. I'm only trying to raise awareness of Conservation, and wouldn't be able to if SOPA + PIPA apply

While ostensibly about combating piracy, they are so poorly written that they threaten to censor the entire internet as we know it.
