  • Why doesn't the city of New York pass a law against horse-drawn carriage rides? In the midst of fumes and traffic is no place for a horse... is there a primary link to sign a petition?

  • I love the message. Ive never been on a horse drawn carriage and never plan too, but i want to know what will happen to the horses if people stop using carriages?

  • you go lea

  • this is HORRIBLE! it needs to STOP.

  • OMG this make me cry a lot !!!! =C

  • Not everyone who takes care of horses or other animals can afford to live up to PETA's perfect expectations! We are still in a recession.

  • @JPa311979 if you cant take care of it, then don't have it. That's pretty simple.

  • @JPa311979 That's why you don't force horses to do this in the first place.

  • I totally agree with the message of this video. However, horses don't get "deep, restorative sleep" by lying down, as lying down too long--as opposed to brief periods--can lead to internal damage and even suffocation due to their weight. That said, yes, they definitely should have a clean environment and room to move about freely, as well as graze freely...

  • i never liked horses but when i saw this video i feel sorry for them.

  • so what happens to the horses if nobody rides the carriages do they become dog food or something?

  • No animal works as hard as the horse does, for us humans.

A horse will literally DIE from exhaustion, just to please it's human master.

Few humans would do that for one another.

And what do we do to repay them? We torture them under these completely inhumane circumstances, we work them to death, and when they cant take anymore, we drag them off to a slaughterhouse and cruelly put them down and make meat out of their flesh.

We don't deserve their trust or their loyalty!

  • @PrimeGodist very true.

  • I don't understand why people are like that.

  • That is so sad.

  • i discredit everything peta says. humans need to stop killing and torturing each other before we need to worry about animals.

  • @splintercellchicken yea i know what your saying ppl would rush in the middle of the road to pick up a puppy before they would help a fellow human sick world

  • Oh...let's all treat all the animals in the world as we treat our human friends that would surely be great

    *Sarcasm

  • @Raptor89994 Animals might be lower than us but they still needed to be taken care of.

  • @Raptor89994 Having a voice for those who do not is definitely important, whether they be humans or animals. Do you not see people and charities helping humans in need? we can do both simultaneously -_-.

  • They treat draft horses very badly in New York. But some carriage companies outside New York do treat their horses very well. not ALL people are evil animal abusers. Not all carriage horses are treated like this, it's bad how they treat those horses in New York, but some carriage horses have it very well and love their job!

  • @sunmoongirl1 I defiantly agree with you, I own 2 horses in my families carriage service and I would never allow anything that was talked about in this video ever to happen to our horses. We treat our animals with respect and admonish, because we all feel they are part of our family and we will never ask them do to anything we wouldn't do ourselves.

  • @sunmoongirl1 I just feel that Peta needs to realize that not everyone is brutal to animals and should be a little bit more specific on the businesses that partake such cruel acts.

  • shit, you guys should hear about how many millions of horses died building our nation's railroad system, especially in the West. subjugation of other species, and even our own, has been our calling card for so long.

so sad to see the human ego at its worst.

  • i never knew this is what they went threw. it is pure animal cruelty. I'm shocked that in the 21st century this is what people are doing to these poor animals that don't even have a choice.

  • lol i got treated worse in my holding cell...

  • that's the attitude that must have for the horses! they are not a transport, they do not complain does not mean it does not hurt them

  • HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN?? POOR HORSES!! THEY DESERVE BETTER!!

  • oh my god! i never knew.. i will never do it again, i swear! this almost made me cry.. og my god..

  • I signed the petition this needs to be stopped!!! 

  • I'm sorry if I like animals more than people. Even if the men who will lose their jobs after their horses are put to a better place don't have hope of getting money, horses need more care than them. I love you Lea Michele!

  • Poor horses! ILY, LEA! Keep doing good!! You're amazing!<3

  • that is so bad

it makes me want to cry

  • Fix the problem Lea....Don't abolish it....thats just kinda childish of you and PETA, start your own NYC horse stables and carriage, cause take biz away from them.......won't stop them, and you won't take biz away cause it's a staple of NYC...to have a horse drawn carriage ride...so, fix it...this is nothing more then a "awe that's sad" video, you don't give a real solution...instead of throwing money at dumb PETA give to a good horse stables place so they can grow and kick out bad competion

  • @giantcandy AGREED!

  • @AlyxFisher I agree with what you said about famous people getting paid for doing things like this but I think that you're wrong that horses will do something if they want to because I myself live in New York and theyre forced to live this life.. they have no choice. Theyre tied to carriages and the owners even have whips, they have metal bars attached to their mouths all day even if they're eatting which obviously is uncomfortable. Well this is my opinion so I know you might not agree with this

  • Can't tell if trolling or unaware of the worse things in life...

  • Even if not all horses lie down to sleep and rest, it's still important for them to have the option and leg room to do so. The rides are fine if done ethically; have to say though that I have seen a horse who looked tired with his head hung low, like he wanted to collapse. It stopped to urinate and the urine looked really unhealthy. The next day, I saw the same horse and he looked a lot better. I did not agree with whoever managed the horse, allowing it to be overworked to that point.

  • This is so stupid. Most of those Hollywood types have no idea what they are talking about. They get paid to say the things their handlers give them to read. I have owned five horses and know that these animals weigh on average 1000 pounds. If they dont want to do something they are NOT going to do it!People who ride horses know this. Also, you have no idea what a horse is thinking so how the heck do you know if a horse is distressed by this stuff? These are not wild horses, they were bred for this.

  • @AlyxFisher how is this stupid? regardless if these "hollywood types" are knowledgable about the cause they are claiming to support or not, they're able to bring attention to the cause using their name and the fame attached with it. think of how many people who are fans of lea michele are watching this video just for the sake that she's speaking in it. and i'm appalled by the fact that you are fine with the living conditions of these horses. these beautiful animals deserve respect and care.

  • @AlyxFisher Oh, you are SO wrong. I own a farm. It is VERY possible to make horses do what they 'don't want to do'. I've seen other farmers overwork their horses MANY time cos they're too cheap to buy another horse or two. PLUS, even in cold places they don't even bother building a barn for their animals. They are kept, year-round, in the cold fields. So, not only in NY are they mistreated.(MY horses have it very good, TYVM!,,,plenty of food and heated stables. Plus, enough horses.)

  • @AlyxFisher Furthermore, there are stories in the news every month about people who keep horses having the SPCA come to rescue the horses. By the time they've been called, many of the horses have to be 'put down' cos they're in such bad shape and can't be saved. If you own any animal at all, you MUST take care of them. They are dependent on you. If you can't afford it, give it to someone who CAN. (I have 2 'rescues' on my farm. Pics from when I got them and now are night and day.)

  • Only lea can make me cry for something I care nothing about I like no where near nyc but I signed the petition and I tell people about it all the time.

  • horse should belong to grassland, not road crowded with cars.

  • what? something like that does exist?

I mean, there is nothing wrong on horse carrieges in general, but is it so hard to treat these animals good? And: . People who choose a job depending on suffering animals can get another job when this business is not working anymore, the animals don`t have a choice

  • Couldn't even watch it! This needs to be stopped!!!

  • Why does the ASPCA allow this????

  • I cried

  • :( so sad, now bring on the tumblr gifs

  • horse aren't supposed to lie down

  • thanks lea <3

  • I'm tearing up watching this :'( Lea is so amazing and inspirational!

  • oh my gosh i never thought how bad it was i knew it was bad but not that that bad! Lea and Peta we will try are best to help the houreses and keep them safe

DONT GO FOR A RIDE STOP HORSE CARRIAGES!

  • GERMANY WILL HELP YOU WITH THIS! THANKS LEA AND THANKS PETA! <3

  • I don't like the use of horse in anything...period!!

Horse racing to me, I think is the worst & this is just as bad!!! :\

  • Before I realized they were treated horribly, I wanted to go to NY and get a horse drawn carriage. I can't believe I EVER thought that.

Keep it up, Lea. If I ever have the opportunity, I won't get on one.

  • there's alot of horse drawn carriages too here in indonesia, and their horses is not as big and healthy as americans... help!

  • This made me cry!

  • I didn't used to understand what was wrong with the horse drawn carriages in New York, but that's terrible! The least they could do would be give them some rest and better living conditions. It's no wonder one of them dropped dead a little while ago. That really should've been a wake up call, but it doesn't seem like much has changed.

  • You have my support, greetings from Sweden

  • She never stops inspiring me! ♥ I hope these things get banned it's cruel!

Stop being a lazy ass and walk to see New York. I will NEVER step on one of those!

    You go lea!!

  • She's amazing, so inspirational.

  • It really good that Lea takes her time to launch this campaign. However, if people keep using these horses for transport, it will never stop. People on the vacation have to say; no, i'd rather walk! But some people are so selfish, they don't care about animal welfare.

  • This is a very good campaign. But there are many factors here.. When you take out any industry you take away jobs.. What about the families of the people who drive the horse carrages? Sometimes I feel like people (especially celebrities) neglect the needs of humans (like the homeless ones on almost every streetcorner of NYC) and just help animals because it's easy. People need help just as much, and maybe even more than animals do. That being said I respect Lea for standing up for her beliefs.

  • @timothyj91 They could replace horse drawn carriages with motorized carriages. That way the horses don't have to suffer and the carriage drivers can keep their jobs. Motorized carriages are still quite nice and romantic and an animal doesn't have to suffer for anyone's enjoyment.

  • ok i'm not gonna lie..... I cried.

  • aseaodlksaldsad

  • "Imagine for a moment that you're FORCED-D-To do" HAHA!! Save the horses :)

  • I think she is the cutest human being to ever live on earth.

  • The real animals are not the beautiful horses. what a sad situation...

  • I agree with most...horses do NOT sleep lying down. They rarely lie down, actually it is hard on their lungs to do so for prolong periods of time. That needs to be taken out to maintain credibility of this video.

  • @gomissmo It depends on the horse. Some do like lying down. In fact, most do at some point or another, especially if they've had to work all day... come to a decent barn after its been vacant a couple of hours

  • Oh, Lea you'll go to make me cry =( Save the horses !

  • I rode a horse drawn carriage over the weekend. Absolutely loved it. Would recommend it to everyone. Try it sometime. I even rewarded the steed with an apple. He looked healthy to me.

  • Omg, this should be forbidden now! This is animal crualty. :( Poor sweeties. How can human beings be so freaking mean.

  • Thank you Lea Michele for supporting this

  • OMG! this made me cry!

  • omg this is horrible, horses are so pretty and fun, they have no right to be treated like this. lea michele we love you for giving out this message. you are amazing and we will not treat horses wrong, they are better than that!

  • so sad :(

  • Those horses :(

  • wow, made me tear up. this is so awful! why would someone put horses in a building and make them walk upstairs? wtf has this world come to!

  • Save The Horses.

  • poor things this just made me cry :''(

  • OMG this so awfull, horses aren't supposed to walk up stairs and those stables aren't even stables, I like horse carriages but not on busy traffic like this.

after a long day of hard work on those busy dangerous streets, they don't even get a nice save place to rest that's just so... it makes me want to scream

  • no one has paid much attention to this. It's a serious thing. I'm for PETA , SAVE THE HORSES!!

  • poor babies

  • :(

  • no one even likes carriage rides so please spare these poor horses!

    this made me cry.

  • Good on Lea for sending this message to the American public! Please boycott horse carriages amercia!

  • how would we have traveld across the ammerican fronteir yall

  • Well that was very upsetting, but enlightening. I can not believe this is aloud. They have my support.

  • Anyone who disliked this should spend a night in the stables.

  • @CrimeDramaBee and the stable area should be sized down to a 1:1 ratio from horses to humans

  • Save the horses

  • She sums it up perfectly, i had no idea :O

  • I would never go on a horse-drawn carriage ride in NYC. Thank you Peta and Lea.

  • i almost thought it was going to be an original song about horse drawn carriages but i fully support anyway.

  • as a horse owner i must say THIS IS SICKENING any where else in the U.S.A those living conditions would be considered illegal and anyone responsible for that would go to jail what makes new york so special?? i'm never going to NYC i don't want to see that kind of crap!!! please go to stophorseabusedotcom and sign the petition PLEASE!!! for the horses' sake!!

  • en Chile sucede lo mismo en Viña del mar lo hacen como atraccion turistica es horible como estan

  • @amyty23 So true... am live Here and that is Horrible... Plz... Lea... or Petta... you Can help us? Plz!! we need help!!! this is So Bad. :C saludos Amiga, Mensaje muy importante

  • never knew horses sleep in a bed

  • I dont think they should be banned completely but there should be strict regulations regarding the living conditions!

  • You should come to mexico ITS WORST!!! Im not kidding , please do something!!

  • in belgium it's forbiddden to make a horse work everyday, at first you need to have a licence to make a horse pull something, and second if a horse works on monday it may not work on thuseday and wednesday, at third a horse must be kept in a real stable where they can move around freely with fresh water an food.

  • I grew up with horses and I'm pretty sure they can handle the work they do, but those living conditions suck balls.

  • I agree, I was going to say something efore I watched the whole thing. Horses thrive on the excercise, but the exhaust fumes is probably not good, and the living conditions are abysmal.

  • I love Lea Michele....and I LOVE MEAT.....and I love animals

  • @The510CARLOS you DO NOT love animals and eat them too!!

  • Wasn't it revolutionary to have cars so we didn't have to use horse-drawn carriages anymore? Why are we going back to the turn of the 20th century?

  • When she said tourists I said we should immediately boycott horse carriages!! Hahaha

  • should i feel guilty that i was swooning over lea more than feeling sorry for the horses? eh, it's her fault for being so beautiful and charismatic. about the horses, there are horses trotted around in central london too but i don't think they're used for the same purposes as the ones in nyc, i wonder what the london horses' conditions are like? hmm

  • I never thought about this before, so sadd never going on carriage ride in NY!

  • I began to cry, it's so sad :C

  • She's so beautiful.

  • omg thats soo sad,i wil never ever go on a horse carrige ride!!

  • I find this a very uplifting eye opener! Thanks PETA!

  • um not to be insulting but what a horse more worthwhile take to do is run or walk.........though i must the stalls could use a little renovating, but still idk i didnt really see anything really wrong with the horses???

  • 38 people must be the owners of horse drawn carriges.

  • This makes me cry so much! Lea is such a genuine person who is speaking out about such a horrible cause! Lea for PETA Me for PETA!

  • This literally made me cry.. Call me a baby I dont care, Im convinced!

  • Peeta Mellark

  • She convinced me!

  • She has to be one if the sweetest people alive; I agree. Horses arn't ment to be hauling tourists around NYC. I will NEVER go on a horse cariage ride. She's that one person that opened my eyes..

  • i agree with lea 100 percent. Im so happy now that ive never gone for a horse ride and i never will

  • This is why horses, pigs, cows, abused wives run away to freedom.

  • SHE'S SO RIGHT!

  • 36 people don't have a heart... :(

  • @mariasoaresalmeida - it's now gone to 37 heartless people :_(

  • why ride horses when u hav cars? duuuh.

  • In regards to someone saying that people are stuck in poor living conditions, you do of course realize that humans have a voice, and often a means of helping themselves? If you're an animal you're not afforded such a luxury. Besides the living conditions they face, I imagine riding through traffic and working on the concrete all day would be damaging, particularly in extreme weather conditions. And I've seen carriage owners take the animals out in such conditions. It's just cruel, point blank.

  • Okey I THINK IT'S TIME TO MAKE CLEAR that horses do sleep lying down. they only rest when they're standing up, because they need to run fast if needed. There's always one or two horses keeping watch while the other ones are sleeping and they only sleep lying down for about 45 minutes. That is why it is so imortant to have bedding (besides the fact that is absorbes droppings), because they really need those 45 minutes.

  • awww thats so sad!!

  • Lea, I love you so badly :)

  • Instead of horses why cant people ride bikes?

  • Well that was the downer of my day

  • ....this..made...me tear up!! ive never ridden in a horse carriage before and now i never want to. these horses are abused and its not fair

  • Horses sleep standing up..

  • @shellfish1010 No, they REST standing up. Horses only sleep 45 minutes every night, and that is when they lie down. Because they only sleep 45 minutes per day, those 45 minutes are extremely important.

  • Yeah that Sucks! but we got humans issues to take care first!

  • she reminds me of Rachel in this video xD

  • I will never be on one of those carriages ...

  • These horses are in a symbiotic relationship with their human co-workers. The dangers they face are no different than that of the people that operate them. They work a day's work and are repaid with free room and board, food, fans that adore and love to ride in their carriages, vacation days and even a RETIREMENT PLAN.

Yes, these horse get to RETIRE. I hope someday my retirement consists of me sitting around all day playing and hanging out with my buddies, remembering my glory days like them.

  • @thescarybox You're so stupid. Did you know that some of the NYC horses are sent to a slaughter house? They sand off the number on the bottom of their hoof and act like it was never theirs.

  • And yet, these horses have much better living conditions than many people in the same area. But of course, animals are cute and fuzzy and we'd much rather deal with saving them than human beings.

  • The conditions this video depicts are not optimal but a lot of the bleeding heart stuff is over the top.Horses don't lay down often; any barn can catch fire whether in the city or not. Fire dept would probably be there quicker in the city than in a rural area. Horses are bred for work. My draft horse ENJOYS working. Heavy humans? You'd be amazed at what a conditioned & well-cared for horse can pull. Harrisone62192 is absolutely right. Get your facts straight, Spokesperson.

  • Okay, while I will say I disagree with the condition of the stables these horses stay in, this commercial is FILLED with nonfactual information. Horses do not lay down because they are animals of prey, meaning it is in their behavior to be alert all the time in order to be aware of predators, its been that way for thousands of years. Secondly, horses have been bred and domesticated to do heavy labor, THEIR BODIES CAN HANDLE IT if their fed and taken care of properly.

  • @Harrisone62192 I agree. The majority of these horses are not mistreated at all. Horses also don't lay down because they literally don't need to: they even sleep standing up. Their knees lock when they stand and lying down for too long can cut off the circulation in the horse's legs and body, which ends up killing them. That's why a broken leg for a horse is often a death sentence.

  • @quasimojo8 Thank you! Someone else who clearly knows about horses and knows what they're talking about!

  • Lea Michele is too amazing!

her voice is so effective and makes you think even more about these poor horses :( x

  • But horses sleep standing, they dont lie down o.o

  • @2101lovelilly is right horses don't lie down to sleep.... If they did they'd die! I don't agree with the conditions that these horses live in, bit that doesn't mean all carriage horses are kept like that some have proper stables and loving owners who care for them... This is STEREOTYPING the industry.

  • Aaaaw i started crying!

  • Keeping horses in a multistorey building like that is awful. Surely this is breaking plenty of laws...

  • why do people even THINK for a second that you can house such a large animal in a place like New York City?!! Are they on crack or something, dear God!!? Those horse should be in the wild or on a comfortable farm at least. I may not know much about animal abuse or right or all, but I'm decent enough to know that you CANNOT do that to a beautiful creature like a horse.

  • aww

  • ok just to let her and other people know, that if a horse is lying down for to long the weight of there lungs can actually kill themselves, they suffocate, just ask any vet and they won't tell you different, but i support lea and love horses i actually own 1 but he isnt a carrige horse =)

  • Horses are not dogs or cats. Fewer people actually have the recourses to deal and work with horses then other four legged companions. Even then, people want to RIDE their horses. Not stick them in a field as pasture ornaments. It's not like we hate them (I am planning on fostering TBs and adopting one), but ride-ability is a huge factor of owning a horse. Many drafts don't have that.

I love animals - Horses, dogs, cats. I work at two rescues. These are just the facts. Terrible, but true.

  • Ok . . . I know I am going to get bashed . . . However, as I actually KNOW stuff about horses, I have to put these out there. I am just going to say first that I do not believe in abuse, and I love horses more then anything. Even then, look at the FACTS.

    1. Carriage horses are bred to deal with heavy loads.

    2. Horses can stand comfortably while sleeping.

    3. Where are these horses supposed to go? Just throwing them in a pasture is not possible - Where is the land for that? Continuing....

  • @HorsesIC Do you know what it's like to be a horse? It's called empathy...asking yourself 'what if this were me'? Where are the horses supposed to go? Have you ever heard of wild horses? The land is there b'c nature takes care of its own. I don't care about your knowlege. You have no heart. I read alot of insensative stupidity on yt but I have no patience for ppl who think abusing animals is ok. God help your equines. Good day.

  • @hotbeercoldwomen

While understanding where you're coming from, I also need to say that, thankfully people like Martin Luther King, etc. were not thinking like you do.

Sometimes, it only takes one person and a lot of perseverance to change the world. If you feel that there is nothing You personally could do to change things, think again.

Write letters, demonstrate; simply get the word out. Tell people not to take carriages because of this, that and the other reason. Just try to do Something.

  • No, free the horses! This is sadder than the Grilled Cheesus episode of Glee!

  • i started to watch this, but then i stopped because it was too sad. this is sadder than the grilled cheesus episode of Glee... lea you are amazing for doing this. if i could i would go to new york, break into the "stables", free all the horse and take them to a nice stables in the countryside. :)

  • Thats terrible. I had no idea they do that to them. What about other states? Are horses treated like that too?

  • @XxXUndeadLenoreXxX I live in a suburb in Va, and I rarely ever see horse drawn carriages. One time I went on a college road trip and for 5 hours, all the way to a college near the end tip of VA all I saw were horses and cows, there's plenty of land west of I-95 in Va. So to answer your question, no I don't think horses are treated like that everywhere. Actually I think more horse/cattle farms are settled in the south east.

  • love you Peta !!

  • 1:23 WIN

  • As much as I hate PETA's guts, I must admit every horse deserves a nice, green pasture. They won't get that from living in the city.

  • Ok.. I will probably get bashed about this but if you avoid going on the carriage rides to "stop this", you will only be giving the horse a worse life because its owners will have less money to feed them better or to spend on an at least decent space to rest. They would have to eat worse food, probably live in a smaller space or share with others, and in general probably live even more miserably. I do agree this is mean but appart from trying to make it illegal, we won't help by doing that.

  • 0:25 thru 0:27. Tourcher.

  • these 19 people have no souls.
