I really do respect Mr Walker because he broke all the village's laws to help his daughter so she wouldn't have to go through all the misery and loss he and the other elders went through at the beginning.
when they are saying"those we do not speak of" they are speaking of those they are supposedly not supposed to be speaking of so they might as well have a name for them.. ha got me?? :)
They sent the blind girl because they knew she'd find her way. They also sent her because once she got to the towns, she wouldn't see what they are keeping from her.

Okay, they have no TV or electricity or knowledge of it, nor Currency. Wealth here means food, homes, and a family. Also they know about guns, Ammaaazziinggg BS.
@Jfrozin feeble minded individuals wouldn't understand this movie, they choose to live this way, they know that other towns exist guns have been around since before electricity was truly understood, they choose to live separately from the rest of the world like the Amish
Every single word of dialogue means something in this movie. The very first shot of this scene, Mr Walker and his wife are talking. His wife says he's the one who has taken the oath to never go back to the towns. She's actually on his side where at first it sounds like she's trying to talk him out of it. She's saying Ivy didn't take an oath, send her....
Everyone only talks about the fact that it's not a horror. That M. Night sucks and this is a pile of shit because the story isn't what anyone expected. What about the cinematography? The shot of Ivy and her dad walking to the old shed is gorgeous. The cinematography is great in this film. And the sound design is so good that noone even notices it. There's more to this than just the story. I love this movie.
What do you mean? Mr Walker was trying to make it a better life for the people of the village. This movie is right in a way, that the modern world is pretty much fucked.
'The shed not to be used' is where the film lost me. No matter how many spooky titles you give it, a shed will never be ominous because, well, it's a fucking shed. It's where you keep your rakes and plant pots and shit. There was a logic to the idea of the creatures- you don't go in the woods because they kill you; why can't you go into a shed? They may as well have put in 'The garbage disposal unit not to be turned on', which reveals that the film's set in the present day...
@videogamenostalgia You dont go in the shed because thats where the village elders hid their creature costumes. The creatures in the woods weren't real. They were used to keep anyone from wandering off or attempting to leave the cult.
@DrDissent I'm just saying there was a logic in not going in the woods- they believed the monsters would kill them. They provided explanation for why they didn't want people going outside. There's just this shed and they say 'don't go in there' 'why?' 'Just because'- it kinda undermines the point of having the whole monster cover story. Why don't they just say 'Don't go in the woods' then and not use the monster excuse. The shed not to be used would just encourage people to challenge it.
@videogamenostalgia The only possible explanation... the shed was on the outskirt of the village and right on the edge of the woods. Perhaps to close to the monsters to take a chance.
Now that you mention it, I do find it kind of funny that nobody ever questioned it.
@DrDissent But they're very familiar with it- It's just opposite some guy's house. Ivy identified it immediately, and she's blind. It's not actually in the woods; it's part of the village. I love this movie, but it seems a little off that they'd make such an effort at maintaining a convincing cover story for the woods, then make such a half-assed excuse with a shed, which is MUCH more accessible...
@videogamenostalgia LOL who knows, maybe it was simple laziness on the elders part? Maybe the director wanted to get on the nerves of anyone paying attention? Personally I would have kept my costumes in the woods.
All and all Id say it was a pretty good movie. Considering it was filmed dirt cheap and were still talking about it years later, Id have to call it a success. :)
@DrDissent And the people ARE occasionally disobedient. Lucius just casually wanders in there, and the kids play a game where they try to bait the monsters by standing on the edge of the woods. Surely some kids would get unruly and just check it out. 'The shed not to be used' would inflame people's curiosities...
Mr. Walker told her they were fake so that she wouldn't be afraid. However he mentioned that rumors of these creatures existed. So when she came across one, and after telling herself "it's not real", she realized this thing was there and ready to kill her. So now she thinks they're real.
Why would he show her the monsters were fake? She would've been fine with the rocks. There's no way she could keep the secret over her lifetime, even if it didn't shatter her entire universe.
Would u guys stop it with the damn rocks already, she just told the guys that tagged along about them to make them feel a little better, She knew all along that the monsters weren't real, just back track and remember when her father walked her to the shed, he showed her the costumes, so she knew all along....that's why she threw the rocks away as soon as the guys chickened out and left
Did anyone else notice (around 1:15) the wind calmed at te very second her father said he was sitting in the chair she was sitting in when he found out she was going to forever be blind?
@RatherIntriguing dude....it's a MOVIE. which means it's not real, which means i can express my anger. if it was real that'd be a different story. calm down.
@ishino007 SPOILER...............a costume of one of the monsters...the elders of the town made thew whole monster thing up to keep the villagers scared into staying withing their land. each elder takes turns dressing up as a monster
Dude, these rocks? Yeah. They'll save us from the flesh eating monsters for sure. It's TOTALLY legit. You could probably, like, bruise their freakin' legs with one of these.
She doesn't do a very good job at acting blind. She looks at people directly at times and moves her eyes. I notice that most blind people always look straight ahead, and turn their heads instead.... O.o She's pretty though, and otherwise fits the part well.
When I saw the part where Christop stops and refuses to go further when this came out, I thought for sure at that moment he would be picked off my a creature and the movie would start to become a horror movie. Man was a I wrong. But if that did happen, I would have long forgotten about this movie.
Hah, Im watching this movie because im bored, staying home from school, have something wrong with my right eye, thats why I didnt realise until now that the girl was blind :DI I suck
(About the magic rocks) You have to consider the fact that they're primitive. They don't have modern technology, or modern science, they wouldn't know any better about whether any rocks are "magic" or not.

@myPerfectImage She could see before so I'm guessing she has remaining habits from before she was blind.

When I saw the part where Christop stops and refuses to go further when this came out, I thought for sure at that moment he would be picked off my a creature and the movie would start to become a horror movie. Man was a I wrong. But if that did happen, I would have long forgotten about this movie.

I dont wanna cause no fuss, but can I have your magic Rocks?

(About the magic rocks) You have to consider the fact that they're primitive. They don't have modern technology, or modern science, they wouldn't know any better about whether any rocks are "magic" or not.
