As far as i'm concerned...i think that actually worked...how could some men with some quite low budget, from a comedic tv show and a university made a rocket attached to a very unaerodynamic robin went up straight to the sky, perfectly vertical...amazing
@rephilb He was sketchy with the details but I think it was more the theory / calculation / design side to the project. Not sure how much of the project he helped build. He also did work on the Blue Peter Rocket and other work on professional rockets and satellites (JPEX rocket mainly).
......in fact I have just looked at the footage again and you can see that the explosion is added later, just before it crashes the foreground is light green short grass, as it explodes it is dark green bracken, shame they had to do that but hey... it is TV I guess.
@SlowPuncture: Watch it again. The light-green grass is in the background, you can't see the dark-green bracken before the explosion because it is in the foreground and the camera is still (tracking? panning?) down towards it *before* the detonation. There's a shot just after from a distance showing the bracken and it's surround grass.
brilliant! I love top gear!! but one thing is nagging at me, why did it explode on impact, from the looks of it the fuel had all been burnt so therefore no explosion should have happened - was it edited in to make a more interesting conclusion?
nice

The fuel vapour in the empty tank would have caused the explosion. It's not fake.

@twork4 indeed! it is a fact it should explode, otherwise everything else would have been fake if we couldn't see an explosion

well it's a bit disappointing they felt they had to embellish what is an otherwise awesome bit of television. thanks for pointing it out thought.

@SlowPuncture I don't see what you're talking about; looks real to me. the camera just jerks a bit, that's all.
