  • what kidn of erraser is that? 2:30 how do i get it? thanks

  • you know when it's great when the subject starts to appear jumping to 3d as if it comes out of the screen.

  • yea the features are off, but to make the drawing look more good looking then the actual person (cus hes kinda ugly) lol that happens alot hahaha

  • I think this is gorgeous...I am inspired to pick up a pencil, an eraser and a charcoal stick and create something. What a gift you have given me!

  • I can't believe that people are complaining about the facial features being "off" With art, it doesnt matter; good artists copy, great artists create.

  • it's doesn't sexy at all?

  • If you want to sell art, you have to do this kind of thing. I am not degrading you, you're of course very talented. It's just depressing to see how people are still stuck with the artistic paradigm of the 1500s. It's like Marcel Duchamp never walked the surface of this Earth. Maybe all it takes is a few more centuries for Derp Derpson to embrace the more complex and intellectual side of art.

  • @guzsaj Art in the 1500s was much more intellectual and deep than that of Marcel Duchamp. If you criticise a certain kind of boring academic realistic painting, well, I can be with you... but I wish art could go back to the sublime meaningful quality of the Italian Primitives of the 13th and 14th century. Nowadays trendy conceptual artists have no clue what they are doing; their art is humiliating. Wassily Kandinsky, to mention only one great painter, understood all this very well.

  • @guzsaj

for me the culture that came after duchamp was false intellectualism. More like parasitism.

  • You have an interesting technique. I like the white dot you pulled off on the nose. It made it pop.

  • @MrVideoforhire what did you use to make those dark base shadows at the start? Anyone know? Thanks.

  • Amazing work ^^* question, is that a firm bristled brush that you use to spread the willow charcoal or soft?

  • awesome work man.,!^^

  • absolutely jaw dropping!!

  • i'm kinda confused... is that charcoal pencil you're using when you started drawing teh details of the eyes??

  • good job and what kind pencil do you use?

  • @grindecore Looks like charcoal pencils, including a pitt charcoal pencil (or possibly pastel?). Great demonstration Richard. Wish David Hockney would sit and watch you draw, to dispel his backward notions about talent and reliance on mechanical aids.

  • superb work sir...

  • Unreal!!! Awesome!!!

  • :o cool

  • wow this is so technical and perfeccionist :O

  • people say i'm a good artist.. but i am nowhere close to this.. ** needs more practice..

  • @lalolalo07 it seems hard at first...its like anything the first time you do it. you just have to relax and be patient.

  • @lalolalo07 they say that probabli because they you frend, or if they not than because theyr being polite. AS USUAL

  • @lalolalo07 people lie, i'm playing but practice makes perfect

  • epic

  • I think that it is a very flattering rendition of the subject, especially, for the amount of time it took.

  • only crits is that is to small and paper are huge.. but i like it anyway.

  • Like I said : some people are walking around blind without a cane. Somebody obviously thought that I was degarding this fine work in my post. Who ever you are please read my post again. Maybe you will then see the praise I heap upon this gentleman. If not its time for a dog. BTW......... Art in any form is rooted in belief much as religion. It is taking a step from the known into the unknown and believing before you get there. The result no matter the degree is Art. Art convinces. No secret.

  • 11 out of 10, mate! I can manage pretty good drawings of the human face and body (though not in your league), but taking the measurements and building up the necessary structure for perfect proportion has always eluded me. Thanks for giving me some good ideas to work with! Truly superb artwork with a comparatively basic medium like graphite or charcoal requires much more skill than splashing pretty colours about.

  • Resemblance is not the hallmark of great art work . Technique and suggestion reign supreme in art. It is for some a acquired taste and for others innate. This gentleman has honed a brillant talent bridging both seamlessly, something few can master. Should you possess the "eye" of worth little need be said. I am smiling for this artist at the critique of his work and laughing at those walking this earth blind without cane believing talent to this degree resides in a perfect copy.

  • @danc317, true art is whatever you are inspired to do, and realism inspires me far more than any other take on drawing. Work like this truly sends shivers up my spine, and the urge to draw as beautifully as this is what sends me into timeless rapture with only the urge to capture what I see drawing me on inexorably; I couldn't and wouldn't want to draw in any other style. Each to his/her own, and I'm personally fed up with being referred to as an illustrator but not a 'true artist. Don't judge!

  • Absolutely wonderful thanks for posting.

  • That portrait looks absolutely amazing. I cannot BELIEVE people here saying that it doesn't look like the guy, I'm an art and animation student, and I had to learn to draw in many styles, realistic and cartoonish. I'm impressed by this, congratulations you are truly talented.

  • The complaints about resemblance are rather peculiar. It's a work of art, not a snapshot. In, say, 100 years, are people going to whine about likeness? No, they will judge the drawing as a work of art. There is also the issue of the film: we have a drawing, and we have an occasional view of the sitter on film, and the film itself is an abstraction from the motif. It's a beautiful drawing and a very interesting (and generously shared) record of process. Thanks RM. I learned so much here.

  • Nice technique, no doubt the artist is very experienced - confident accurate strokes. But I dont like the portrait - its dry and uninteresting, over rendered.

  • Awesome! The drawing kind of looks like Moritz Bleibtreu from "Run Lola Run" :-) As for the eyes, they look alright to me. Pause at 5:02, 5:03 and 5:04; the shadow and angle of the light makes the real life's right eye look a bit wall eyed. But that's real life, and it's especially noticeable in some photographs where you have light reflecting off of odd angles on one's eye ball. No biggie :-p

  • I feel sorry for the model

  • What type of paper is that?

  • fucking excellent!

  • bravoo

  • I personally think the drawing is beautiful, but all the people suggesting you must have equal artistic skill ("post your video" comments) in order to spot things that are "off" are mistaken. You don't need to be a chef to tell if something tastes funny in a restauraunt and even the mind of a non-artist is very sensitive to stuff regarding facial features (even if they can't articulate what exactly is "off"). It does however take a skilled artist to explain what exactly is "off."

  • I loved your portrait. Thank you for the demonstration.

  • I do like the subtle reflected light along the left sight haha glad that wasn't just blocked out

  • awesome!

    i try drawing too...

  • was a prty awesome ghostly/glowing looking lighting, at least early on. very nice work.

  • is that VINE charcoal you are using?

  • that is ridiculusly amazing!

  • awesome!!

  • Браво!!!!

  • beautiful portrait!!

  • a lot of people seem to think that the video uploader is the artist himself. come on, guys. the disclaimer is in the description. aaaand. amazing video! goodness, i've never seen anything so life-like in my life. this is AMAZING. richad really does have a keen eye for all of this. seeing him build planes at the beginning had me completely boggled.

  • what media did you use?

  • What kind of paper do you use? Name the brand if possible.

  • What kind of pencil/charcoal does Richard use to block in the darker areas? I like how he's able to brush it into the paper and create a blending effect. I would also ask,...how does he get such an incredibly fine point on his charcoal pencils?

  • amazing, stunning... it takes super talent, a keen eye and a sense of light/dark perception. thank you so much for posting, learned a lot

  • what the fuck are u people talking about,THIS IS ART,AMAZING!

  • That's just too damn good! And from life too.

  • Totally great mate! I learned a lot from you about the steps to drawing with Charcoal, esp the blending of the dark areas with the brush at the start. Do you use charcoal dust at all?

  • This is him for sure but you made him look better. Portrait artist can also be somewhat of cosmetic "transformers"! good stuff.

  • sexy. no homo.

  • Beautiful ....just beautiful.

  • very good...bravo!

  • great work

  • im very jelous, im very good at drawing from photos bt i also do plenty of life drawing and i know hoe different and how much harder it is to do a drawing from life so well done. 4 any1 who think " i cud do that " just cos they did some celeb from a photo dont know how hard it really is from life

  • dam!

  • Excellent.:

  • Just wow.

  • You are amazing! What an incredible drawing. Thanks for sharing.

  • song is gay

  • All you people picking at this are just ridiculous. Just because you have a keyboard doesn't mean you are an expert. Richard Morris is a leading realist of today and most of you haven't got a damn clue how to draw I bet! So shut it. Or post your video on here! Great job Richard!

  • @eastcoastartist u shut up

  • @jeans263 Grow up lil' kid, and while you're at it get an education.

  • So lovely.

  • drawing is handsome but the real guy not so much

  • глаз в тени так и не поставлен правильно Все эти уловки сверевками вызывают горькую улыбку . Размер головы -взят маленький . . . опять профанация

  • That is wonderful. Thank you for making this video.

  • Cheers for the Vid. I always appreciate process shots, great help as I have just recently got into figurative drawings.

  • also.. do you teach, and where are you located? i just sold my car and motorcycle to take classes at the art students league in nyc .. im looking to take as much instruction as possible.

  • nice work. it is refreshing seeing a real artist draw from life instead of all these videos on youtube that start with a tracing from a photo and they just render it and get thousands of OMG YOURE SO AMAZING comments ..

can i ask a question though, it looks like you are doing a 1:1 scale .. what do you measure when you are using your horizontal plum lines? can you plz explain why you use plums and more importantly HOW you use them.. ? thanks , great work !

  • looks like Marlon Brando ;P nice job tho

  • doesnt look like him. looks like someone else... u didnt get his specifics.

  • wow... all the people trolling on this video, it's very simple. post your own video response of YOU drawing a portrait in real time. let's see how you do...

  • Really good drawing, but does not look enough like the model. He spent his time on

the quality, but not the resemblence .

  • You are a fantastic artist, and this is much better than what I can do at present, but I couldn't help but notice that you gave this poor man a case of amblyopia. :)

  • Eyes aren't in alignment with each other and the left eye (his right eye) recedes too much, other than that great

  • wow,it is nice. i really like it.hoping that i can also do such a nice and great drawings.

  • The eyes and mouth are off, a 5 th grader could do better.

  • Amazing job!

  • almost like a painting, really awesome work!

  • Well I think it's pretty amazing. Good work and good video

  • ME DRAWING SNOOKI

    /watch?v=TmzktcVYzFA

    /watch?v=TmzktcVYzFA

    /watch?v=TmzktcVYzFA

  • What medium did you use to draw this picture? And was that a charcoal vine that you used for the shadow areas?

  • chili peppers! nice drawing.

  • It looks a little...2D. Sure the face is nice i guess. very detailed, you know. good job on that. but when I paint or draw a portrait, I tend to finish the shirt or have the background fade from white to black using charcoal. His neck has no demension and his upper lip is too thick when comparing to the model's face. The drawing looks unfinished...but good job anyway.

  • very cool...my drawings always come out to be very cartoonish and i dont like that i wont it to be more reall..but no matter what i do it just comes out that way

  • very nice work some people on youtube have not got a clue what they are talking about how many of you could do that in 2 hours its not as easy as richard makes it i know

  • Yes, very nice technique, like it. But, and I don't mean to be insensitive, the eyes and mouth are "off".

  • @eldonscott9 By "OFF" what do you mean? Please post a response video of you drawing!? :)

  • @MrVideoforhire dude whats the tan pencil you are using?

  • @MrVideoforhire Wow, I had no way of knowing how delicate you were. If you're not able to see he has been drawn cross eyed for yourself, a video of me drawing won't be of any help to you! :)

  • @MrVideoforhire If you can't see it, just remove my comment then.

  • @MrVideoforhire he jealous you, nice work ;)

  • @MrVideoforhire Wow, are we able to comment your vids only if we can do better than you ?

You're on youtube only to have fan ?

your good and your vids are interesting, but stay humbles ^^

  • @SkollDrum i think he means for people to criticize this video, they have to be better at drawing than richard. which, i think, is fair. so if people don't have anything nice to say, then they should be quiet unless they can show that they are better than this amazing artist.

  • @MrVideoforhire I think what he means about the lips, is that the model has sharer points at the arch of his upper lip, your drawing seems to have more rounded lips, but I don't mind this at all, I think you did a great job, bravo sir

  • @MrVideoforhire why would you need him to post a response video to demonstrate what he sees wrong in your drawing? Wimp attack?..... I loved the drawing but seeing your response makes me cringe.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder not in his ability to produce it.

  • @MrVideoforhire I love your drawing btw. I think I know what eldonscott9 meant was the left side is a little off in proportions. Left eye looks a bit more open than right. Also, shading might be lightened abit or more reflection. Left jaw bone is a bit larger than right. And maybe last thing is left corner of the mouth should slant down just a tad. I have this problem on everydrawing...everyone...and its always the left side. Sucks as I don't see it till I'm finished :( Love your work!!!!

  • @MrVideoforhire the eyes looks perfect to me :)

  • @MrVideoforhire He means that the eyes and mouth don't resemble the actual person and he's right. You don't need to be an artist to be able to see that so he doesn't need to post a video response in order for his criticism to be credible.

  • @MrVideoforhire Fantasic! The proportions of the face are spot-on & by no means "off".

  • @eldonscott9 Not photo replica (thats what photos are for) and great execution

  • @eldonscott9 jealous much?

  • @lasign77 stupid much?

  • @eldonscott9 can u draw?

  • @eldonscott9 How can you say it is "off" when you don't have the benefit of comparing it to his reference?

  • @FORMETOKNOWONLY The model is shown in the video. In fact it even fades the sketch into the model and back.

  • @mikedimples Yes, I saw it...the drawing is a bit off in a few places...still a good drawing.

  • OK, I paused it at minute 4:57 and there are a few things that are off, but he did get a good likeness (he made a good picture--sometimes we use various devices to achieve it). My figure drawing teachers always told me that it was very important to "cheat it" when necessary and make a good picture. That being said I think it is kind of shitty to be hyper-critical...I admire this man's skill and doubt many of you here could match it.

From one artist to another: GOOD JOB!

  • @eldonscott9 I think he captured an amazing likeness! Could you elaborate on how you mean they are off? I'm really curious because I am an artist and I would like to understand how non-artists perceive accuracy.

  • @eldonscott9 No, they're not at all.

  • the nose is not done

  • This drawing took 2hrs for Richard to draw.

  • @MrVideoforhire man that is quick!

  • How long did this drawing actually take?

  • great technique...

  • You are using a rope 0:19 and why???

  • @Svetovidijak its a piece of string w a weight at the end. Used to establish a plumb line. To base angles off of.

  • @AzureAugust obscene? LMFAO. It took 2 hrs. :)

  • @AzureAugust

uhmmm portrait drawing sessions are usually 3 hours + ... you really are clueless .

  • @AzureAugust wtf? say what?

  • Fabulous! Pencil with a painterly feel!

Both careful attention details and relaxed strokes.

  • Excellent demonstration and style.

  • Excellent drawings...You are a good artist...dont know why you have a shitty tattoo...forgive my bold remark but nevertheless, you are a good artist.

  • Awesome!! I really like it! : )

  • Amazing!!!!

I always have the problem that I over use the old graphite stick a bit too much and end up not being able to put or use a softer pencil over the previous shading.

    Tips welcome please. :D

  • @XXLBritish use your ersure over those parts and fade them out and then u should be fine.

  • Beautiful work. .

  • LOVE IT!

  • Please, could you tell me how you sharpen your pencils? Doesn't look like a sharpener did that. Did you use a knife?

  • @ponyboy1488 Razor blade...

  • OH MY GOSH !!! FABULOUS WORK !!!!! LOVE THE DRAWING ..

    thank you for the video...

  • damn that was good

  • amazing work! I luv it!

  • he looks crossed eyed

  • @kushlocz crossed eyed is a very bad thing... I can assure you this is not a religious piece! LMAO

  • Mr. Simon, please make more videos like this! I've visited your website and LOVE your style. I learn a LOT from this. THANKS!

  • @hymntonight Mr. Simon? I made this video... Matthew Marchant

  • @MrVideoforhire My fault. I don't know where the heck I got "simon" from! My message was intended for the artist Richard Morris. I'd very much like to see more videos of him at work! :)

  • Very helpful video! and I strongly disagree with the user who complains about there not being enough "value" or too much shading.

  • so good!

  • how do you make it look so easy!?

  • @lewish611 He does it all day everyday! That's the secret... Lot's of hard work and dedication.

  • My god! SUPERB!

  • Good portrait but seems too much shading, not enough value. Hair seems a bit underworked. Not that I could draw with this quality, but I know what I like.

  • @freemind321 What's the difference between shading and value? I'd love to hear...

  • @MrVideoforhire I have no idea what I'm talking about. My buddy says he likes pencil portraits that you can tell were done with a pencil. i prefer photo realistic portraits with pencil. Its awesome either way. didnt mean to be harsh.

  • what kind of paper was used?

  • @jhonbaker123 Bristol 500, vine charcoal, general's charcoal pencil, kneaded eraser, and blending brush and blending stump.

  • very inspiring. beautiful

  • BEAUTIFUL! LOVE YOUR WORK! LOVE THE MUSIC!!!

  • brilliant:)

  • sweet

  • I am an aspiring artist and i know you're a good artist well developed and usinging what you know about the craft daily. There are a lot of good pointers i can learn from you.

  • also would be very interested as too which paper you used for the piece. Its stunning by the way!!!!

  • i can see a generals pencil, i assume it 2b but whats the other one?
