looks good man. if you want to know a little quicker way, try boiling it using soda ash. you can get it at pool supply stores. put 1/4 cup of soda ash in your pot and mix it up then simmer the skull. take it out about every twenty minutes and it should be done in about an hour and a half. im a taxidermist and use this method. i will warn you though, be carful because the bones turn very brittle before drying out and if left in the water too long can turn chalky. it definitely works if done right
great video bud.. just 1 question.. why not put the clear coat on the antlers?.. is it just for more of a realistic look? just wondering. I put clear coats on all my antlers gives them a pretty cool look.. thanks for the video and I'll have to give this a try for my next buck.
@doggbiter hell it does.. but I don't do Euro mounts or shoulder mounts.. I just skull cap them and put the antlers up.. and no I'm not an idiot.. obviously it works because i did it to my 1st buck over 7 years ago and it still has a misty morning dew look to it. Now judging by your last 2 comments you're a hater which would probably make you a kid in his teens so I'll be polite young man. Don't knock anyones techniques till you've tried it.
The best way to whiten the skull is to mix baby powder with that peroxide(it mades a paste) paint that on and leave for a couple of hours and then hose off and repeat until it is white.
If you don't protect the antlers when you bury the head, do they get white too? I'm not a deer hunter but I've collected alot of antlers and they're always off-white in color, I presume from exposure to the elements.
@RobbytheLion i dont think they be a little dameged by the weathering but the real reson u need to protect them is squiriels will eat the antlers there is minerals and stuff they like to eat
@347seeker Oh yes and porcupines too. All the antlers I've collected have some chew marks from porcupines, you have to find them before they eat them all up. This is really cool though. The organisms in the soil do such a clean and thorough job. Nature is the ultimate in efficiency.
I have done at least 8 so far. I have tried boiling them; It stinks. I have tried burying them; It takes too long. I leave it out for a couple of days. I don't let it rot and smell, but let some files lay eggs on it. Then take it and loosely burry it to the antlers, like in the video, with a weighted wash basin or trash can on top. In warm, humid weather it only takes about 2 weeks total without skinning it! I am in Florida though.
skin the head and boil it for 4 hours and everything will boil off of the skull then spray paint it with white matte finish and it looks just as good as his. and it doesn't take near as long
skin the head and boil it for 4 hours and everything will boil off of the skull then spray paint it with white matte finish and it looks just as good as his.
Good job on the skull but I have a faster way of doing it.
1. skin the head
2. clean off extra meat and then put it in water and start to boil it
3. let it boil for a few minutes then take it out and clean off any meat left and clean out whatever brain matter is left (I just spray the inside with water from the hose)
4. Let it soak for a few minutes in normal peroxide and check it and put it back it until it's as white as you want it then rinse it off. Be careful because can turn it yellow.
@MrDEER99 I would say at the begging of summer, like the first of June and the middle of August. I doubt the bug will be there in the winter but not sure cause we did it in the summer.
i hung my head from a tree about 8 months ago and i havent looked at it real close so im not sure how its doin. do you think it will rot enough there or should i take it down and lay it on the ground?
hey boys got aster way, but its not for the squimish, skin it out cut every bit that you can get off, then oil it in boiling water till the meat loosens then keep cutting and scraping. make a hook out of some 12 gauge wire and use it to hook and drag the brain and sinus tissue" make sure to use cation in the sinus area cas its very fragile. boil it clean once all meat is removed. then boil in dawn dish soap to remove smell and any left over gresse, follow with the hair devoler t disired color.
volume 3% peroxide from the drugstore can be added to the boiling water as well. you dont need 20$ worth. 2 or 3 Big bottles will be plenty. this will aid in the final bleaching process and the water wont be as greasy.
Sodium Carbonate (sal soda) a pouder mixed with your boiling water at ratio of 1tbsp/gallon of water... boil 30-45min. check the progress. it does boil over very easy so keep an eye on it. This stuff works great, turns meat and flesh to jelly so to speak and very easy to remove "even the brain" this process will even aid in the bleaching process. It can be purchased through Van Dykes Taxidermy Supply. I like to airbrush "bonewhite" over the finished skull then 2-3 coats of clear...
Can you tell me ? Did you rinse off the peroxide cream after the desired whiteness? I am at the stage of whitened enough. Now I am wondering if the scull needs the cream rinsed off? thanks
I just did my buck and all you have to do is get a big pot fill it with water. You don`t have to skin it . Just cut the head off at the base. Put it in the water, let it boil for three to four hours. Most of the skin, hide ,fir and meat will boil off. Then boil it once more for two to three hours and clean out the brains and left over grizzle. Then that`s it. I`m just in the process of letting it dry and I will brush on hot peroxide to whiten it up.
-cover antlers with aluminum foil and boil it in water with $20 bucks worth of peroxide from the drug store. (don't worry about tiny chunks of flesh, they will bleach out).
-make some finishing touches and boil on high in same solution for 20-30min
ps. i find drilling out a hole on the underside behind the pallate? helps with brain removal
boil it in a big pot for 18 hours after you skin it make sure you use a crappy pot cause it will warp.. you'll need to add water every few hours to keep the skull submerged just have the burner on high for the first couple hours and then turn it to low you'll be good to go leaves it a nice natural finish... mine turned out great
good video but if you dont want the skull to stain ass bad from the mud just put a bucket over it nd secure the bucket and the bugs will find there way in and take care of it also to skin the head make a Y cut in the back right by the antlers and skin it down and skin everything else off to but be careful at the nose i gut a little to far on a doe that i did but i just put some body filler on it and u can bleach it but be carefull cause the bone will start to flake tape the antlers n paint whit
Great Video. Just got myself a 8 point up here in Shelburne Ontario Canada - It certainly is a different look and I will let you know how mine works ouot.
the fastest way to get the meat and brain out without worrying about the antlers is to put it in a big pot of water and put it on the stove and boil it... but don't put the burner on high... keep it on low, this prevents softening the skull and having a big gas bill... let it boil for about 6-8 hours. using a knife, carefully take the meat and everything off. u might need to repeat or buy some maggots. try it next time and tell me what u think.
what my uncle does for the skull mounts is he digs a gole big enough to fit the whole head in there so the horns and the skull are under ground. you tape up to the antlers and when everything on the antlers is taped up the put tin foil over the tape. You also want to get as much skin and meat off of the skull before buring it. then put it under ground for 6 mnths and hang it in a tree for 6 mnths but the bad part is the horns turn white.
The creme peroxide trick is a good method for whitening. any beauty supply store carries it but NEVER use clorox , clorox degrades the bone and after a few years your skull will start cracking and fall apart. 40 part peroxide works much faster but like he said dont get it antlers it will never come off and your antlers will look spotty white, I use vaseline around the base and then tape the rest tightly. just be patient , take your time if you value your mount. check out my 400" monster buck
This may sound awkward, but a good way to clean the skin and guts is to put a chain around the antlers, then attach to a tree or post, and let the buzzards clean it up. Attaching it to a tree keeps anyone or anything from dragging it off. It only took about 2 days for them to clean it completely! The only downside is if you want the bottom jaw (which I didn't), it will probably end up missing. Easy with no mess!!!
but the thing about tieng them to a tree is your gonna have to fight with squirrels trying to chew on the rack. they'll devour a rack in a matter of weeks.
Skin it, boil it about 5 hrs, pull off meat and gouge out the brains. I'm done after that and I've never had to use bleach on mine. The secret seemed to be letting it boil continuously without disturbing.
large stainless stock pot they sell at walmart! even if you cant get it all the way down in there because the antlers the steam will still cook it, but it takes longer. I did that before its works awesome on took about 2 hours on the boil and smells like chittlins cookin Hahahaha but throw some seasoning in if you want it to smell better! seriously it wont hurt at all! let the meat get tender and knife it off. the shull will turn white as it dries, like chicken bones do!
i had a taxidermist teach me how to do it. and i skinned it and took off meat and eyes out. then i boiled it until extra meat started to come off. then took it to a do it urself carwash and powerwashed it to take off anthing remaining. then dremel the plaque off the teeth and anything else. then use the peroxide. it works great and u can do it in a week instead of leaving it in the ground for a few months.
take a deep fryer tube with water and boil the hair and meat off it is soo much faster

i usually just:
-rough skin it (fur and large chunks of meat)
-boil it just above medium temp for about 2 hrs
-take the rest of the flesh off and de-brain it
-cover antlers with aluminum foil and boil it in water with $20 bucks worth of peroxide from the drug store. (don't worry about tiny chunks of flesh, they will bleach out).
